Mandy stood behind a wooden fence, watching Esther In the courtyard. Esther looked even more beautiful than before, but the sadness in her eyes made her seem fragile.
âMs. Pendleton, this is Bradley Warnerâs wife, and weâve come to ask you if-â
Before Kevin could finish, Mandy interrupted, âPlease leave, both of you. I wonât donate my liver to Bradley.â
âMs. Pendleton, please. I beg you to save him,â Esther humbly pleaded.
Seeing Estherâs tear-filled eyes, Mandy felt a strange satisfaction. She was no longer Liliane Anstey-
now she was Mandy Pendleton. She was grateful to the enigmatic X for this new identity, which allowed her to openly scorn Esther.
âMrs. Warner, my last name is Pendleton. My half-brother, sharing the same father, had his hand ruined by your husband, Bradley. Do you think I would help him?â Mandyâs words were deliberate and hit Esther hard.
âSo, Chadwick is your brother?â
Mandy nodded slightly.
âRelated by blood?â
Mandy smiled but stayed silent.
Esther and Kevin were stunned to learn that Chadwickâs sister was the one person who could save Bradley.
Was there hope left for Bradley?
Worry filled Kevinâs eyes as he looked at Esther, who felt like her mouth was filled with cotton.
âMs. Pendleton, please. I beg you toâ¦â
Radiant in her beauty, Mandy gently shook her head.. âIâm sorry,â she whispered. âYou should both go.â
Esther took a deep breath and knelt before Mandy, pleading. âMs. Pendleton, I know my request is sudden and bold, but please save him! Iâll do anything if you agree.â
Mandy shook her head, her face saying it all. âIâm sorry. Even if you kneel here for an eternity, I wonât help him.â
âMs. Pendleton, pleaseâ¦â
Mandy couldnât bear to look at Esther any longer. She slowly ascended the steps and returned to her villa, softly closing the door behind her. Through the glass, she saw Esther still kneeling outside the fence. A faint smirk crossed her lips.
âIf you wish to kneel, Esther, then kneel until timeâs end, Mandy mused.
Kevin watched Mandyâs retreating figure and helped Esther back on her feet. He whispered, âEsther, stop kneeling. Letâs think of another way.â
Estherâs eyes filled with tears. âKevin, what other options do we have? Weâve searched for so long and only found one matchâ¦â
With red-rimmed eyes, Kevin said solemnly, âEsther, in a world of 8 billion people, there must be another match for Bradley. She canât be the only one.â
Esther clutched Kevinâs arm, desperation In her voice. âKevin, what if I plead with Chadwick? If he says yes, would Ms. Pendleton be willing to donate her liver to Bradley?â
Kevin grabbed Estherâs shoulders and shook her firmly. âEsther, wake up! Bradley maimed Chadwickâs hand. Why would Chadwick help him?â
Esther cried out, âKevin, what can we do then? The longer we wait, the worse his condition becomesâ¦â
Kevin rubbed his temples, exasperated but determined. âIâll figure something out,â he assured her, lifting Esther to her feet. âStop kneeling. Letâs think of another way.â
