Jasper asked gently, âFelix, you donât like it when your father is grumpy, do you?â
âI donât like it!â Felix replied innocently. âA grumpy Daddy is so scary.â
Kids picked up on emotions keenly. Felixâs words hit Estherâs heart. She reached out and embraced Felix, softly explaining, âMy son, Daddy is grumpy because heâs not feeling well.â
Jasper glanced at Esther and Felix in the rearview mirror, adding, âExactly, Felix. Mommy is going to Capitus to study medicine. Once she becomes skilled, she can help Daddy feel better, and he wonât be grumpy anymore.â
âMommy, you have to study really hard,â Felix encouraged.
Esther playfully tousled Felixâs dark hair, looking at his face that resembled Bradleyâs. âThat depends on how well my good son takes care of me.â
âNo problem, Mommy! Iâll be super serious!â
Finally, Esther and Felix reached the airport. Agatha spotted them and waved from a distance. âFelix.â
Felix adored Agatha, so he wriggled out of his motherâs embrace and rushed toward her.â
Grandma Foster!â
Agatha held Felix tenderly and told Esther, âThe plane is ready. We can start boarding now.â âGrandma Foster, you go ahead with Felix onto the plane. I need to talk to Jasper.â
Agatha gave Jasper a meaningful look and then boarded the plane with Felix.
Esther took the luggage from Jasper.
A helpless smile appeared on Jasperâs gentle and handsome face. âEsther, I understand how you feel.â
Esther gazed at Jasper and smiled suddenly. âReally?â
Jasper stepped closer, hugging Esther. His voice was warm and a bit affectionate as he whispered, âEsther, I promised weâd just be good friends. Iâll stick to that, so donât worry.â
Jasper hesitated for a moment and continued. âPlease donât avoid me. Maybe next time we meet, Iâll have a girlfriend! Iâm not short on admirers.â
Jasperâs words silenced Esther. They were the words she had been wanting to hear. She smiled in relief and replied, âThen Iâll be on my way.â
âTake care, and make sure you donât arrive in Capitus too late. Felix is still a child, and an early bedtime would be best for him.â
Esther nodded. âOkay.â
Jasper stood still, watching as Esther pushed her luggage toward the airport entrance. When she reached the entrance, she turned back and waved at him. âJasper, you can head back now. Drive safely.â
Jasper responded with a graceful wave. âIâll leave once Iâve seen you off.â
Esther gazed at Jasper, took a deep breath, and then continued on her way.
Just as Esther disappeared from Jasperâs sight, Kevinâs car screeched to a halt beside him.
Quickly as a panther, Bradley leaped out and grabbed Jasperâs collar. His voice trembled angrily as he demanded, âJasper, where do you plan to hide my wife and child this time?â
