âMommyy!â
Each time Felix called âMommy,â it was always straightforward. When Sunshine called â Mommy,â she always extended the last syllable. Esther could easily distinguish who was calling out to her.
âMy darlings, have you been waiting long?â
Sunshine replied in a sweet and soft voice, âNope!â
Esther pointed to the bathroom, ruffled the hair of the two adorable children, and said gently, âIâm going to take a shower. Weâll chat later, alright?â
âOkay.â
When Esther came out of the shower, Felix had fallen asleep. As a boy, Felix often played vigorously during the day. Once his energy was spent, he would sleep early in the evening. âSunshine, what book are you reading?â Esther sat down next to Sunshine.
Sunshine snuggled into Estherâs arms like a clingy kitten. âMommy, you smell so nice!â Esther saw that Sunshine was reading âThe Magic School Busâ, so she joined Sunshine and began reading the picture book with her.
âSunshine, Anna and I are not yet qualified to adopt you. I plan to let Uncle Steffan and Aunt Xara adopt youâ¦â
Sunshine raised her head to meet Estherâs gaze, her starry eyes misty. âMommy, donât you want me anymore?â
Esther bent down, gently kissed Sunshineâs forehead, and softly assured, âNo, my dear, I absolutely want you, Sunshine. Youâre incredibly adorable. How could I ever think otherwise?â
âReally?â
Esther extended her pinky and whispered, âShall we make a pinky promise?â
âOkay⦠Okayy!â
They hooked their pinkies.
âOnce Uncle Steffan and Aunt Xara have completed the adoption procedures, Mommy will come to pick you up, okay?â
âMm.â Sunshine held onto Esther, her voice soft and adorable, âMommy, Sunshine loves you so much.â
At first, Sunshine just followed Felixâs lead in calling Esther âMommyâ. As she continued, Esther got used to Sunshine sweetly calling her âMommy.â
Esther didnât know why but felt a special connection with Sunshine. She couldnât help but want to treat her well, and she loved her just as much as her son.
As Sunshine fell asleep in her arms, Esther gently patted her and Felix on the head.
âOnce Iâve found my two daughters, Iâll be raising five children. It seems Iâll need to work even harder to earn money,â she thought.
In her sleep, Sunshine mumbled, âMommy.â
Esther smiled at the thought of how wonderful it would be if Sunshine and Twinkle were her daughters.
