âIâm not mentally prepared yet. I donât know how to face her,â Jacob replied.
Even though Jacob did not display his emotions, Esther could sense his unease. She tousled his hair, ruffling it into a messy tangle.
âJacob, youâve played your tricks on me, but I wonât hold it against you.â Esther suddenly shifted her tone to a more relaxed and energetic one. âYour motherâs flight wonât be long now. Shall we go pick her up together later?â
âI donât want to goâ¦â
Jacob was just a child. How could he not want to see his mother?
He wanted to he really wanted to see his mother.
When his mother, someone he had only known through documents, data, videos, and photos, was about to enter his real world, his initial reaction was unexpectedly the urge to escape.
âAre you really not going?â Esther earnestly brushed aside the disheveled strands from Jacobâs forehead. She smiled mischievously. âIf you donât go, then Iâll have to go alone to pick her up. You know, Iâm quite famous because of this case. Who knows? Someone might want to get rid of me, so itâs quite dangerous for me to be aloneâ¦â
Jacob silently lowered his head for a moment before finally uttering, âThen⦠Iâll go.â
Esther grinned. âJacob, did you know your mother and I are best friends? Where we come from, best friends like to arrange pretend marriages for their children. How about I arrange one for you?â
Jacob stayed silent.
Esther continued to jest. âI think Sunshine really likes you. Letâs pick Sunshine, shall we?â
Jacob was still quiet.
âYou donât want to?â Esther teased again. âForget it if youâre not interested. Love marriages are mainstream these days. Itâs not like I can whip up an arranged marriage now.â
Jacob did not say a word.
Sunshine and Felix were playing nearby. As soon as they saw Esther, they rushed toward her like a whirlwind.
âMommy!â they called out.
Esther caught the two little human tornadoes, one on each side, and fiercely kissed them respectively.
âMommy missed you both so much!â
Felix, all adorable and cute, asked, âMommy, whereâs Pixie?â
Sunshine also looked around but did not see Pixie anywhere. âMommy, is Pixie still in the hospital?â
Esther held Felix and Sunshine tightly in her arms, explaining gently, âNo. Pixie is not my daughter.â
Felix and Sunshine had the same puzzled look on their little faces.
âMommy, if Pixie isnât my sister, then where is my sister?â
Esther shook her head with a pained expression. âI donât know where she is either.â
Sunshine extended her hand to cup Estherâs sad face and cooed. âMommy, letâs find her together. Weâll definitely find her someday.â
âMommy, Sunshine is right. Letâs find her together!â
Esther was downcast and disheartened when she learned Pixie was not her daughter. But Sunshine and Felixâs words instantly uplifted her. She hugged the kids tightly as if she wanted to become one with them.
What she did not realize was that the daughter she had been yearning to find was right there- in her embrace.
