Jacob responded with a faint âOhâ and continued to ask, âYou loved the wrong person, but you had children for him. Do you regret it?â
âYou might not believe it, Jacob, but Iâve never regretted it.â Estherâs gaze fell on Jacobâs young, handsome face. âIf youâre interested, I can tell you my story.â
âGo ahead.â Jacob leaned back in the leather seat, a hint of excitement flickering in his eyes.
âI was infatuated with him at first sight. At that time, he was a popular guy on campus, excelling in both academics and sports. Many girls liked him, including me.
âYoung love is like honey, making people eager to taste its sweetness. But he seemed to have an unattainable crush at that time. Iâm not sure of the particulars. Anyway, we got married through his grandfatherâs arrangement. He resisted the marriage while I was immersed in the happiness of having my wish fulfilled.
âI naively thought that as long as I loved him, I could overcome everything and win his favor. But reality proved that all of it was my wishful thinking.
âHe got drunk, and I got pregnant. It was at that time a video came up and spread like wildfire. I tried to prove my innocence, but it was no use.
âThat video then triggered everything after that. You asked how I lost Pixie? It was because I gave birth in prison. When I woke up, the prison doctor told me that my children had died!
âOnly after I was released from prison did I find out that another woman had secretly taken away and raised my son as her own in the manâs presence.
âAs for my twin daughters, he sent them to an orphanage, making them abandoned children. When I finally got news of my daughters, one was adopted, and the other died.â
Estherâs words were filled with anguish.
Jacob fixed his gaze on the Rubikâs Cube in his hands and asked, âDo you hate him?â
âHate?â Esther laughed bitterly. âYou can only hate someone when you still love them. I donât love him, so where would the hate come from? Heâs not worth me investing any emotions in anymore.â
âIfâ¦â Jacobâs voice was hoarse, and he hesitated before asking, âIf your son wants you to remarry him one day?â
âThat day will never come,â Esther said firmly. âMy son will surely understand the pain Iâve been through. He wouldnât want me to return to that dark swamp just for him.â
Jacob did not say anything else. He lowered his head and earnestly played with the Rubikâs Cube.
Esther noticed out of the corner of her eye that they werenât heading to the church hospital as planned.
Instead, the car was driving toward the bustling city center.
As she wondered, the car came to a stop.
The bodyguards opened the door and escorted Jacob and Esther into a riverside mansion that was like a heritage site.
âMr. Sanderson, youâre back!â
Jacob led Esther into the picturesque mansion, with its huge ceiling-to-floor windows overlooking a sea of flowers and a winding river. In the distance, they could see an arched iron bridge-one of the cityâs most famous landmarks.
âThis is your room. Everything inside is new,â Jacob said.
Esther pushed open the room door and was instantly captivated by the luxurious suite.
âThe clothes in the closet as well? Can I wear any of them?â she asked.
Jacob raised an eyebrow coldly and replied, âThe mall delivered these while we were grocery shopping. Given their professionalism, the size shouldnât be a problem.â
Esther looked at the luxurious bedroom. She went straight to the closet and changed into an appropriate loungewear set.
Considering her long hair, she wanted to find a hair clip or hair tie to tie it up. After searching for a while, she could only grab a stick and tie her hair in a bun.
