âMommy, will that bad man who kidnapped us try and hurt us?â Felix was extremely nervous. Esther smiled, trying to reassure him. âNo, he wonât.â
âReally?â Felix remained uneasy.
Esther nodded. âReally.â
She wasnât sure if the person would recognize Felix and herself.
âIf they recognize us, will it put us in danger? Should we leave to keep Anna and the others safe from this mess?â
âDo we have to leave now, Mommy?â Felix asked.
Even though Esther was anxious, she didnât show it. She had to be a mother who could make her son feel safe.
âIf we want to leave, weâll have to wait until tomorrow, or Sunshine will still think youâre scared.â
Esther playfully flicked Felixâs nose.
Felix pouted and protested, âIâm not scared. Iâm super brave!â
âYes, you are, Felix. Youâre the bravest little boy!â Esther affectionately bumped heads with Felix and said softly, âShall we go and play with Sunshine and Anna?â
âSure!â
Felix and Esther made their way downstairs to the living room.
Sunshine watched Felix from a distance, a faint hint of worry appearing on her beautiful face.
Seeing Felix was in much better spirits, Anna smiled teasingly and asked, âAre you still scared, Felix?â
âNot anymore!â
Only then did Sunshine slowly approach Felixâs side, using her cute and sweet voice to apologize. âIâm sorry for scaring you, Felix.â
Felix graciously replied, âItâs⦠Itâs okay.â
Sunshine reached out her hand, and Felix held it tightly.
âIâll take you to the fruit garden behind us to play,â Sunshine said.
âOkay!â
While it was still daylight, Sunshine and Felix headed to the fruit garden behind the house to play.
Observing that they were still children, Esther and Anna followed them to the fruit garden to keep an eye on them.
The garden was filled with numerous fruit trees, and as the host, Sunshine enthusiastically explained to Felix the different types of fruits on each tree.
âI had no idea Felix was such a timid boy, Esther.â Anna felt embarrassed, thinking that Sunshine and Felix would get along well.
But none of them anticipated that their first meeting would turn out to be so awkward.
Luckily, Felix had regained his lively spirit. Otherwise, Anna would have had a difficult time facing Esther.
âAnna, are you familiar with the church school where Sunshine and Twinkle live?â
Anna believed Esther wanted Felix to attend the church school as well, so she offered, âI can write Felix a recommendation letter if you want him to study there, Esther.â
Esther carefully assessed Annaâs demeanor and then spoke after a long pause. âThatâs not what I meant. Thereâs something I want to discuss with you.â
âGo on.â
Esther inquired, âHow did you learn about this church school?â
âThere was a charity event where childrenâs paintings from the church school were being auctioned, and as a designer, I attended. I was captivated by the innocent drawings of the children.
âSince most of them are orphans, I found an opportunity to visit them, and thatâs when I first met Sunshine and Twinkle. They were so little at the time, even stumbling as they walked. However, the strangest thing was that I felt an instant connection with them the moment I saw them.â
