In order to preserve the greater good, sometimes you needed to take unpleasant steps. To break things. To be the unpopular voice of reason.
The thought rotated in my mind. At my desk, I tapped my penâa nervous habit Iâd never let anyone else witness.
Nerves were not permitted in my life.
Nerves got you shot when dangerous, unpredictable people ran rampage around you, leaving blood, destruction, and carnage in their wake.
Iâd seen that fall, the horror-struck faces of my peers whoâd taken the misstep and drawn fire.
A fate Iâd avoided, though only in body. My spirit had taken the hit. Had suffered even as I survived. Yet it had made me the person I was todayâone willing to do whatever it took.
Any means necessary.
I considered what Iâd heard and what I needed. My goals were sacrosanct. My mission blessed. That guided me like nothing else.
Was it too soon to take action? Perhaps.
But Iâd be ready for anything and watching the situation closely. Even from afar, I always was.
When the time came, the tough choice would fall to me, and Iâd deliver.
