âYouâre sure youâre okay?â He frowns at me as he hands over the ice pack.
âIâm fine. Honestly, just embarrassed.â I press the ice to the back of my head. Thereâs a little bump forming. I feel like a total moron for reacting that way, but I hit my head hard enough to make me almost pass out. He had to catch me to keep me from falling over, and he carried me right down to the kitchen.
He studies me, lips pressed together. The folder is on the counter between us. I try thinking up some excuses, but Iâm still a little muddled from banging my skull.
âThen we should talk about boundaries.â
I smile sheepishly. âI have no clue what youâre talking about.â
âThat lock you picked.â His eyebrows raised slightly. âThat was a good lock.â
I snort and shake my head. âMaybe ten years ago. The Primus is way out of fashion now. Itâs got some good defenses against key copying, but itâs way too pickable.â
âHow long did it take you?â
âFive minutes? Ten at most.â
He grunts and crosses his arms. âThatâs slightly impressive.â
âSlightly? Iâd like to see you do it in an hour, asshole.â I glare at him, eyes darting down to his muscular biceps before focusing on his face again.
Keep it together, Riley, itâs just a hot man, nothing special.
âThe lock isnât really the point. You werenât supposed to go in there.â
I shrug and sit up straight. âYou should be happy I did, because Iâm positive I can break into that place.â
His expression darkens. âAbso-fucking-lutely not.â
âI figured youâd say that, but I can do it. The hard part will be disabling the security system, but thatâs where my genius hacker husband comes in.â
âNot happening. Not even remotely happening.â
âWhat are our other options? You canât crack the encryption, which means you need the key. Thereâs no way youâre getting inside alone, and you canât trust someone else to take the job for you. Whoâs going to rob the Mantis? Only someone desperate and a little stupid.â I spread my hands wide. âIâm your best option. And youâre lucky that Iâm good, too.â
His jaw works. I beam at him and drop the ice pack onto the counter. My headâs still throbbing, but not too bad.
âI hear what youâre saying,â he concedes, âbut this isnât some normal job. If you get caught, Fong will have his soldiers flay you alive. I mean that literally. Theyâll peel off your skin and pour salt over your raw flesh to make sure you donât get sepsis. Itâll be agony.â
I let my arms drop. âThat sounds unpleasant.â
âIt would be the most excruciating way to die imaginable.â
âAlright, you scared me a little bit, but you still donât have any other options.â
âIâll find someone.â He looks away, and I can tell heâs lying. âItâll cost, but itâs doable.â
âYouâre crazy. Iâm right here. My brother trained me for this, and with everything in that folder, I can pull it off.â
He levels a hard stare. âI said no, Riley. If your headâs feeling better, go back to bed and donât talk about that folder again.â
Anger bubbles in my chest. I hate being dismissed. Thereâs nothing worse than being treated like Iâm useless.
My fatherâs been talking to me like Iâm a brainless moron since I was a little kid.
I donât need it from my husband, too.
âWe both know Iâm right,â I say firmly, not going anywhere. I plant my hands on the counter and lean forward. âNobody in the world is stupid enough to break into a secure Mantis office. You need me.â
âYouâre my wife.â His face falters slightly. âI donât want to risk you.â
He obviously doesnât like this. I can tell heâs beginning to dig in, and if I want to get him to stop being so fucking stubborn, I need to find a way to crack through his knee-jerk defensiveness.
âYouâre not risking anything. Iâm risking it because Iâm the one that got us into this mess. At least let me help fix things.â
âI canât.â
âThen just stake it out with me,â I say, speaking quickly so he canât interrupt. âWe wonât go inside. Weâll keep our distance and check the place out in person, okay? If we can come up with a safe plan to get in and out, then maybe weâll do it. But if youâre right and itâs too dangerous, Iâll let it go. Does that sound reasonable?â
His face tightens. Clearly, it sounds terrible. But he glances away, takes a breath, and nods once sharply.
âOnly because you did good work picking my lock,â he says, sounding grudging. âAnd when you realize itâs too much, youâre going to drop this plan. Promise me right now.â
âIf I canât do it.â
âAnd youâll be reasonable about your abilities.â
I get to my feet, smiling sweetly. âNobodyâs more reasonable than I am, darling.â
âI really doubt that.â
I walk around the counter and kiss his cheek. He glares at me, but I can tell heâs already softening. I pat his big, muscular chest.
âCome on, quit being so angry. Weâre in this together, right? Bonnie and Clyde to the end.â
âThey died in a police ambush.â
âWell, Bonnie and Clyde without the bullet holes.â I head back toward the stairs. âWe should get some sleep since we have such a fun day ahead of us.â
âI already regret agreeing to this.â
