âWhat on earthâ¦?â
Elizabeth sits to one side of the table. Michael to the other. Each has a mound of paper worthy of a termite mound and a cardboard crate to one side. As I watch, Elizabeth briefly scans a sheet then tosses it into the box beside her. Michael is shaking his head, disbelief writ large.
âHe really did keep everything, didn't he. This is a parking ticket from nineteen-ninety-two and thisâ¦.â
He scans the sheet, his lips moving as he does so, ââ¦. is an invoice and guarantee for removal of a waspsâ nest from the following year.â
âHow did you get dragged into this, Michael?â
âHe volunteered,â says Elizabeth, her voice short. âPlease donât upset my staff member. I might lose him.â
Michael snorts. âYouâve got me for today until Charlotte and James turn up. But Iâm happy enough to help. If you like, I can take a box home with me. No harm in doing a bit during the evening in front of the fire.â
Elizabeth swings grateful eyes on him. âOh, would you?â

âA pleasant afternoon, my Love?â
She flops down in her chair. Itâs very uncharacteristic. Normally, my Elizabeth is graceful and carries herself well. Today she has all the signs of being at the end of her tether.
âItâs been a long afternoon.â She glances around the room. âMaster, is there any wine? Iâm exhausted.â
âExhausted? Just from a few hours of shopping for a wedding dress?â
âWe have been through every wedding shop I know of, plus several of the larger department stores. I have looked at hundreds of dresses.â She presses a hand to her forehead. âIâve gone wedding-dress-
blind. For someone who normally doesnât give a hoot about clothes, Charlotte is being very picky about this. I wouldnât have minded if she was having trouble finding something to suit her. But she looked stunning in everything she tried on.â
I chuckle. âWell, she would, wouldnât she?â
âMaster?â
âShe looks a lot like you my Love, and you also looked stunning on our wedding day.â
She smiles, squeezing my hand at the compliment, but thereâs somethingâ¦.
Whatâs wrong?
âSo, did she find something she liked in the end?â
She throws her hands in the air. âNo. Nothing made her happy. Iâm going to have to go with her to do this again.â Then she hesitates, her voice slowing. âMaster, Iâm wondering if everythingâs alright with Charlotte. She was very snappy with me towards the end of the afternoon.â
Thatâs not like Charlotteâ¦.
â¦. She adores Elizabethâ¦.
âHow do you mean? Alright?â
âIâm wondering if she really wants to get married?â Then she slants me a meaningful look. âOr at least, if itâs Michael she wants to marry.â
