As much as Karl valued the opportunity, he couldnât let Nora take such a risk.
Although he and Ian always argued whenever they saw each other, deep down they admired and respected each other a lot. Leaving aside the fact that both he and Ian held each other in high esteem, just the relationship between Tanya and Nora was alreadyâ¦.
Karl thought about how Tanya had reacted when he had called her to ask her to contact Nora for him. Her daughter had kept asking things like, âIs it dangerous?â, âAre you sure it wonât be dangerous?â, âIsnât there any danger?â, etc. Karl had guaranteed that he would not let Nora suffer even a scratch in the incident.
Now that things had turned out this way, who knew what the League of Hitmen might do to them?
If Nora got hurt, how was she going to answer to her daughter?
So, after weighing the pros and cons, Karl decided that he would rather lose the chance to clean up the company and get out in the open than risk something happening to Nora.
But, unexpectedly, just as he was about to hang up the phone, Nora told him, âNo, itâs okay. The mission will continue as planned.â
Karl was surprised. âWhat?â
âAll right, that settles it. See you tomorrow.â
After hanging up the phone, Nora played with the three children for a while and then went to bed early, at eight oâclock at night.
Cherry and Pete had long since gotten used to her going to bed early, but Xander felt that his mom didnât spend enough time with him and still wanted to play with Nora some more.
Even if Nora didnât say anything, but just patted him on the head, he felt especially happy.
But the woman was now lying motionless and had fallen into a deep sleep after barely two minutes. She curved her lips unhappily and muttered discontentedly, âHow come she sleeps so much?â
Cherry continued to play without even raising her head as she replied, âGeniuses need a lot of sleep!â.
As soon as she said that, Pete nodded his head.
In the game, Chester also approved of the statement. He said, âYeah, come to think of it, Justin has always slept more than others since he was a kid. He needed to sleep nine hours a day. Later, when my father scolded me for being so lazy and told me to learn from Justin, I also started sleeping nine hours a day.â
Cherry was surprised. âAnd then?â
Chester replied, âHe slept nine hours a day, so I slept nine hours a day too. Justin didnât change, so I didnât either. After he woke up, he started studying, so I watched him study. It was terrifying once he started studying; sometimes, he could even study for a whole day! I was awesome too: I could watch him study for a whole day! And now I can play for a whole day too.â
The three little ones: ââ¦â
Chester smiled and said, âBut itâs okay. Iâm just a normal, everyday person, so itâs not a problem. Look how busy Justin wasâ¦. Besides, smart people have to carry a lot of responsibilities. He took over the family business when he was only 18, unlike me, who can still afford to be here and play, even though Iâm already 22. right?â
Pete: ââ¦â
Xander: ââ¦â
The two had no way to refute him.
As for Cherry, her eyes widened and a longing look appeared on her face. She said, âWow, how envious, Chesty, Iâll also work hard like you in the future!
âIf my brothers sleep ten hours a day, I will also strive to sleep ten hours a day. If they work hard to eat, then I will also eat a lot of meat and grow up fast! Pete and Xander, you both have to study hard, OK? Iâll work hard to play my games too!â
After speaking, he turned to look at Pete and Xander and raised his little fists at them. âI cheer for you, Pete and Xander~â
Pete: ââ¦â
Xander: ââ¦â
Chester finally understood how dire the consequences of his words were.
If Justin found out that he had led his little niece astray, he would probably jump out of his grave and beat the crap out of him, wouldnât he?
At the thought of Justin, Chesterâs heart sank.
Chesterâs father was Justinâs Fourth Uncle and the youngest son in the family. He grew up with a lifestyle that consisted of eating, drinking and partying. His mother hated that his father was always hanging around, so she had pinned a lot of hope on him after giving birth to him.
Elderly Mrs. Hunt treated all the children in the family equally. Roger, who was the son of Elder Mrs. Huntâs second son, graduated from a prestigious university and later joined the company. He was certainly capable, but unfortunately, his heart was not in the right place. Whatâs more, he went so far as to sabotage them in every way possible, which ended in his outright dismissal by Justin. In spite of everything, Roger was very talented.
Brenda, the daughter of Elder Mrs. Huntâs third child, didnât even need an explanation. A graduate of a prestigious university, she was not only part of Interpol, but had even risen through the ranks to the position of captain. Her ability was evident. The hard work Brenda had put in since she was a child was also evident to all.
She was the only one who liked to play. However, neither Elder Mrs. Hunt nor her mother approved.
In the end, it was thanks to Justin, who took care of him, that he was able to live this carefree life, playing every day and doing what he liked while receiving dividends from the family business.
When he thought about this, Chester would get cranky.
Why did someone like Justin have to die?
Besides, Justin disliked him the most for playing with Cherry when he was alive. So, Chester immediately said, âYou must not learn from me, do you hear me?â.
âWhy?â asked Cherry.
It would be enough as long as her two brothers tried hard. Wasnât it good for her to grow up happily?
Even if Pete tried to persuade her to study, too, Cherry still thought it was more fun to enjoy herself and have fun instead â
Xander was very easy to deal with, after all, his personality was half orthodox and half heretical in the first place. To convince Cherry that he was the older brother of the two, he patted her chest and said, âWell, donât worry. Only your big brother has to work hard. You can just be a happy little sister.â
Just as Cherry was about to break into a smile, Chester let out a quiet sigh and said, âBut if you do that, in the future everyone will undoubtedly say that Nora is a failure.â
All three children were very protective of their mom. Hearing what she said, Cherry and Xander immediately asked:
âWhy?â
âWhy?â
The two looked at Pete in unison after speaking, only to see him frown, obviously aware of the reason. He replied, âBecause youâre the only one who grew up next to Mom after we were born. If both Xander and I make a name for ourselves in the future, while all you know how to do is have fun, they wonât say itâs because we both spoiled you. Theyâll just say, âSee, as expected, the girl I raise is no good after all.'â
As soon as he said that, the room fell silent.
On the phone, Chester also said, âItâs exactly as Pete says. You should also know that here in New York there are a lot of busybodies who love to wag their tongues. They just love to make a spectacle of other peopleâs lives! In the future, when Pete and Xander are successful and theyâre so envious that theyâre filled with jealousy, theyâre not going to talk about how awesome your brothers are, but how inferior you are. And then, theyâll blame it all on Nora.â
Cherry cocked her head to one side. It was obvious from her big dark eyes that she was thinking about something.
After a while, she sighed and said, âOkay, I get it~!â
Suddenly, he felt that his game wasnât so much fun anymore.
He put down the phone and said, âChesty, Iâm not going to play anymore. Iâm going to study.â
Chester: â?â
He hurriedly shouted, âHey, at least finish this round before you go!â.
Cherry shook her head. âNo, Iâm not going to play anymore, I have to make sure I do what I think! Until I become successful, Iâm not playing again!â
Chester: â!!!â
If I had known, I would have said those things after the round was over instead!
The next morning, Nora felt that things were a little strange at home.
She went downstairs. Only when she scanned the room while eating did she notice that her daughter, whose phone kept going off in her hands, was reading a book about Math Olympiad problems. She asked, âPete, whatâs this question about?â
Pete was about to answer when Xander, who was next to them, cut in and said, âCome on, Iâll show you.â
âOkie-Dokie.â
Pete: ââ¦â
Nora: â?â
She rubbed her eyes, wondering if she had gotten out of bed wrong today.
Why were things so strange? Her daughter had previously shown some symptoms of ADHD due to her high IQ, but with her two sons teaching her, she was actually doing much better.
As a result, Nora didnât pry too much.
Justin and his two sons spoiled Cherry, plus they thought she was fine as long as she grew up happy. Nora, however, disagreed. Being a woman herself, compared to that, she preferred her daughter to be strong and have a passion for life.
After all, she was not going to live with her brothers all her life. The only person one could rely on was herself.
Therefore, no matter the reason for her daughterâs sudden diligence, she was overjoyed.
After breakfast, she exchanged hugs with the three little ones and gave them each a kiss on the forehead. Only then did she leave and head for the Assassinâs Alliance.
But when she entered the basement, she found that no one there showed any sign of having moved.
Nora raised her eyebrows. When she reached Karlâs room, she saw the head of the Assassinâs Alliance sitting in a chair with a worried look on his face.
Nora frowned and asked, âWhy havenât you gotten going yet?â
Karl sighed. âIâve been thinking about it all night. Letâs not go anymore. Youâre more important than all this. Tanya and Old Ian will probably give me a real beating if you lose even a lock of hair.â
Nora: ââ¦â
She said confidently, âItâll be fine.â
âHow can that be? I know youâre the Big Sister of the Quinn Martial Arts School and youâre very skilled in fighting, but assassination is different from open martial arts fights like yours. In particular, the Quinn School of Martial Arts moves are all frank and direct, they donât understand deception and conspiracies at all. While the League of Hitmen wonât dare go too far, they will certainly try to sound us out. Unless Black Cat is there personally, no one can guarantee their safety.â
Seeing that Karl remained so stubborn, Nora knew he was concerned for her safety.
She sighed. Now that things had come to this, she didnât want to hide it from him anymore either, so she simply revealed her identity and said, âI am Black Cat.â
