Chapter 861

But how would it be possible for the dead to come back to life?

He just stood where he was, stunned.

He didn’t know how he should explain himself, let alone what he should do? This was all thanks to his stupidity and self-sufficiency!

In spite of everything, he could not reconcile himself for it. He still wanted to understand something, so he asked, “What can I do now?”.

Aaron narrowed his eyes. “The only thing you can do now is leave Captain Brenda. When Marcus died, she was away for six whole months. It’s also for the sake of revenge for Marcus that we’re so focused on stopping Barbarian now, but your existence will only continue to remind Captain Brenda how tragic Marcus’ death was! You being with her will only bring her pain.”

After saying that, Aaron looked down and checked the time. Then, he walked past him and said, “I won’t arrest you, because you don’t deserve to go to jail to reform.”

With that, Aaron walked away, leaving only Nora and Solo behind.

Nora looked at Solo. For a moment, she didn’t know how she should comfort him.

She suddenly understood Brenda’s feelings very well. From her point of view, Solo might not be the killer-in fact, he had even been tricked-but how could Brenda see him without remembering that tragic day?

For the past few months, Brenda probably hated not only Barbarian, but also the person who had hacked her phone, right?

If Solo hadn’t hacked her phone at that time, they wouldn’t have lost contact and Marcus wouldn’t have come to save her?

So how could Brenda be with Solo?

Solo didn’t do anything wrong.

His only mistake was that he trusted the wrong person.

Brenda didn’t do anything wrong either.

She couldn’t let Marcus down. She couldn’t have a relationship with the person who had indirectly caused her death. She couldn’t cross that hurdle in her heart.

So when Nora asked Brenda what was wrong, Brenda told her that there was no misunderstanding. In all this time, there had never been any misunderstanding between her and Solo.

Yes, there certainly wasn’t any.

The only thing between the two of them was a dead knot.

Marcus’ death was like a thorn forever stuck between the two of them. Even if Brenda chose to be with him, she would probably live with the guilt for the rest of her life.

Nora sighed. She patted Solo’s shoulder and said, “Why don’t you quit school for now.”

“… Okay.”

With his head down, a wilted Solo followed Nora and left the school.

Nora personally escorted Solo out of the school. She watched as Solo entered the hotel outside the school. After packing his modest luggage-which was nothing more than a backpack-he got into a cab and left.

Only then did Nora turn around. As soon as she did, however, she saw a flash of Brenda not far away.

Nora smiled wryly.

Actually, Brenda couldn’t beat Solo either, could she?

She slowly approached Brenda. She said, “She’s gone. Don’t look anymore.”

“Yeah, okay.”

Brenda turned around. On the stubborn woman’s face was a strong, resilient expression.

Nora asked, “Can’t you bear to part with him?”

Brenda’s lips curved into a wry smile. “Yes, I can’t.”

She paused and then said, “It wasn’t easy for me to finally fall in love with a man, and yet I’m letting him go just like that. But don’t worry, Nora, I’m not someone who can’t think straight once I’ve fallen in love. I don’t have time for regrets now – my priority now is to catch Barbarian! And avenge Marcus.”

Nora was a little surprised to hear this. “Avenge Marcus?”

“Yes.” Brenda seemed to have lost the levity that usually surrounded her. She said bluntly, “I know Justin isn’t dead.”

Nora was taken aback. “When did you figure that out?”

Brenda looked at her. “I thought about it as soon as I saw you here at Staav University.”

Brenda looked over. “Justin’s death happened out of the blue. He’s the Big Brother of the Irvin School of Martial Arts. He may not be able to beat Barbarian in terms of sheer strength, but the Irvin Martial Arts School is the most skilled at scheming and trickery, so Justin should be good enough to escape. Also, when I saw that you weren’t too sad, at first I thought it was because you and Justin didn’t love each other that much. However, the three children also smiled happily every day. To outsiders, the children are still young, so they must not understand what death really means, but I know what Pete is like. Although he is young, his IQ is equivalent to that of a fifteen-year-old, so it’s impossible for him not to understand. So when I saw you here, I knew right away that there must be something going on between you and Justin.”

Brenda was a police officer who was very good with details. It was no wonder she detected such things.

Now that things had come to this, Nora didn’t want to hide it from her anymore either. So, she nodded and said, “Yes, he’s not dead.”

Brenda let out a sigh of relief. “I’m not going to ask what you two do, but if you ever deal with Barbarian again, you can count me in. There’s an irreconcilable feud between us.”

“Agreed.”

The two chatted as they searched the school for Peter’s body.

The rest of the cops had already searched everywhere, but it was as if Peter had disappeared into thin air, and they simply couldn’t find any clues. In fact, for some reason, some students even said they had seen Peter buying breakfast in the cafeteria in the morning.

Brenda found this puzzling. “That’s impossible, are you sure the person you saw was Peter?”.

Aaron was even more incredulous. “Yes, they are sure the person they saw was Peter. After questioning them closely, they told me that Peter always wears a baseball cap and a towel when he goes for a run every morning. Then, covered in sweat, he goes to the cafeteria to buy breakfast and takes it back to his dorm. I checked the surveillance cameras in the cafeteria: ‘Peter’ had his back to the cameras the whole time and did not show his face at all. He just created an illusion to make everyone think Peter had gone to breakfast, when in fact, the person buying breakfast at the time was the killer!”

Brenda’s eyebrows drew together tightly. “Barbarian’s modus operandi is very strange this time. He used to kill outright and brutally all the time, but now he’s simply being too strange. Not only has he killed Peter and left us clueless, but he’s even impersonated Peter afterwards? What the hell is he trying to do?”

While Brenda was thinking, Aaron also commented, “If it wasn’t for the poker cards in the room, I would have thought that Barbarian isn’t really the one behind all this time! How could someone like him, who has always been simple-minded and straightforward, have come up with such a complex plan? What the hell is he planning?”

Nora, who was standing next to him, suddenly said, “Now I know what he’s planning.”

Aaron was taken aback. “What is it?”

Nora looked out the window. “There he is, his target has arrived…”.

After what she said, someone pushed the door of the office they were in.

A few teachers and students came in. As soon as they did, they started accusing and criticizing both Brenda and Aaron.

“Officer, what the hell is wrong with them, do they have any idea of the urgency of our projects? We agreed to your request when you wanted us to cooperate with you yesterday. There’s no way we’re doing it again tonight.”

“Yes, we are staff and students here at Staav University, Not prisoners! We can choose to disobey your orders! We demand freedom.”

“We are all students and professors. Instead of investigating Professor Mayer’s death and going after his killer, you stay here and do so many senseless things? On top of that, they even claim that Professor Peter has been murdered? How can that be? If Professor Peter has really been murdered, then produce some evidence of it!”

“Is it okay to lie just to prove that your judgment is correct? Professor Peter just posted on Instagram, And yet they say he’s dead? This is ridiculous!”

“Yes, do you think the staff and students at Staav University are idiots? We have a Law School here! I am a law student myself. Officer, I would like to talk to you about human rights and freedom now…”

“Officer, you have no right to incarcerate so many of us. We have the right to freedom. You can’t lock up almost ten thousand teachers and students in school with you just because of a murderer! I’m going out now… I have something to attend to at home!”

“I’m coming out too! I’m out of tissues, I have to go to the supermarket!”

“I’m going out too, I’m going out too…”

People’s voices were getting louder and louder.

Seeing their behavior, Nora narrowed her eyes and said slowly, “See that? This is exactly what you’re looking for.”

She looked at Brenda. “Barbarian came here looking for something and he won’t leave until he finds it, but your presence here has seriously affected his ability to judge the situation and his objective. That’s why he’s doing this: he wants to incite the students and teachers to throw them out.”

Aaron: “!”

He clenched his fists in fury. “Goddamn it! That son of a bitch!”

Brenda was much calmer. She narrowed her eyes and looked at Epson, who was leading the crowd. He said, “The president and I have already agreed that I will leave tomorrow if there is still no murder tonight. However, in the meantime, you must all obey our orders! We represent the decision of the school.”

Epson scoffed and asked, “You represent the school’s decision? Therefore, must we lose another night here? Captain Brenda, if there is no murder tomorrow and the police leave, what will happen to the time we lost tonight? Who is going to compensate us for it? Who is going to take responsibility for our lost time?”

Brenda took a deep breath. “I’ll do it!”

Epson then demanded aggressively. “And how are you going to take responsibility for it?” Brenda scoffed, “If nothing happens by tomorrow morning, I’m willing to be punished! I’ll take off this uniform I’m wearing.”

“Okay! Don’t forget what you said!” Having achieved her goal, Epson said cheerfully, “I hope you won’t break your promise tomorrow!”

“Don’t worry, I never break my word!” replied Brenda stubbornly.

Epson scoffed, “Then we’ll wait until tomorrow!”.

After Epson left with the students, Aaron couldn’t help but anxiously ask, “What do we do if we still don’t find Peter’s body by tomorrow? Captain Brenda, are you really going to take responsibility for this?”.

Captain Brenda had once said that she would never take off her uniform until she caught Barbarian and got revenge.

Hearing what she said, Brenda looked at Nora.

Nora nodded slightly.

Brenda closed her eyes and said, “We may not find Peter, but isn’t Barbarian still going to kill Barbarian tonight anyway?”

With Nora-in other words, Q-here, no hacker would be able to breach her firewall and infiltrate the staff dorms.

And if the staff dorms were insecure, Barbarian would no longer be able to attack them. With that, he could only set his sights on the lab!

Barbarian was a very psychotic killer. Once he started a killing spree, he had to kill five people before he could stop. This was his principle and dedication.

With this in mind, Brenda coldly watched Epson’s back in the distance. It looked like she would have to chase the enemy away tonight!
