Nora approached René. She was about to talk to her but, as if she was very scared, Rene suddenly pulled away and ran to the smaller house next door.
Nora: ââ¦â
Through the window, she saw Rene pick up her phone, her hands shaking as she did so. Apparently, he made a phone call. The person he called said something, which frightened Rene so much that his eyes reddened and he began to cry.
Nora frowned.
Rene seemed to have sensed that Nora was looking at her. She was so frightened that she suddenly pulled back the curtains and huddled in a corner. As for what she was doing, Nora couldnât see.
âMommy, isnât Aunt Rene a little shy?â
Find your favorite stories at galnovels .com Nora nodded. After a momentâs thought, she told Cherry to go back into the house. Then she walked over to Reneâs door, raised her hand and knocked on the door.
Reneâs timid voice rang out, âWho is it?â
Nora replied, âItâs your neighbor, I live next door. Thank you for speaking for Cherryâ¦â.
âYouâre welcome.â
Rene sounded like she was about to cry. âPlease, I beg you, donât come to see me anymore. I⦠I donât want you to lose your jobâ¦â
Nora rushed to comfort her. âHe wonât lose his job, donât worry. Can you open the door? I have something to tell you.â
âI donât have anything to tell you. Please donât bother me, okay?â
Rene stammered a little as she spoke and didnât sound very sure of herself.
Nora furrowed her eyebrows. She wanted to knock on the door again, but at that moment the door to Mrs. Longâs house on the opposite side opened. Mrs. Long sneered, âHe wouldnât dare open the door for you. Considering what a coward she is, if she dares to open the door for you, wonât I be offended? If her boyfriend loses his job, sheâll have to go back to her family! When that happens, her foster father will beat her to death.â
After saying this, Mrs. Long began to rant again.
âDonât step forward to defend others if you are not that capable. If you do something, you should be brave enough to own up to it. Your boyfriend must be very unlucky to fall in love with you. Heâs a graduate of a prestigious university â and Staav University â so why did he fall in love with someone like you? When my son came home a few days ago, he even mentioned your boyfriend and said he was thinking of promoting him. But nowâ¦? He can forget about being promoted! And instead, let him wait to be fired!â
Mrs. Long was very noisy. Reneâs rental house was the most dilapidated of all, so the sound insulation was not very good. Therefore, he heard everything Mrs. Long said. Instantly, she curled up in fear and even started shaking all over her body.
Nora frowned and sneered, âNo word yet on who will be fired!â.
Mrs. Long curved her lips in disdain. âTsk, tsk. Youâre still talking big even at this late date? Heh, maybe youâre not aware of the situation here: my son is your boyfriendâs direct superior!!!!!
Nora wanted to say something, but Reneâs door suddenly opened. Rene, who was thin and skinny as a sheet of paper, appeared. He looked sheepishly at Mrs. Long and then, with choked cries, said, âI was wrong! Please donât fire my boyfriend, I was wrong! Please, Iâll even get down on my knees.â
As she spoke, she actually got down on her knees with a thump.
Mrs. Long, however, did not flinch.
At that moment, a male voice suddenly reached them.
âRene, what are you doing? Get up.â
Along with the loud, firm voice, a large, tall figure came running up. The man looked to be about 23 or 24 years old and was obviously a recent college graduate. There was a sense in his face that he was a boy who had just entered the working class.
He was wearing a suit and looked like someone from the upper class, but his actions and demeanor had a masculine feel to them. He seemed very bright and cheerful plus he was very elegant.
He hurried to lift Rene up.
Rene, whose voice was nasal from crying, said, âLiam, Iâm sorry I caused you trouble. You have a promising future ahead of you, I mustnât keep you. Sobâ¦â
Hearing this, Liam Martin pulled René tugged harder. He said loudly and firmly, âRene, donât be afraid! I told you I would protect you! Since I got you out of that house, I will definitely protect you! Even if I canât continue with this job, I can get other jobs! Trust me!â
Rene looked at him shyly. âNo, no, itâs my fault. If I get down on my knees and beg Mrs. Long, sheâll forgive you. I canât mess with your careerâ¦â.
Liam sighed. âRene! Thatâs enough. All right, Iâll take care of this. You go back to the house, okay?â
Rene wanted to say something, but Liam reached out a finger and pressed it to his lips. âOkay, you go in first! Iâll take care of this.â
A stunned Rene looked at him before she finally lowered her head, her long hair covering her face as if this was the only way she felt safe.
She slowly retreated back inside the house.
Liam closed the door and then looked at Nora. Nora was about to explain when Liam said, âYou donât need to say anything, Rene has already told me everything that happened. He did the right thing.â
After saying that, he looked at Mrs. Long. âYouâre already over sixty years old, and you still bullied a five year old girl? You think that makes you very impressive? You may scare Rene, but youâre not going to scare me.â
Mrs. Long scoffed, âLooks like you donât plan to stay at NTT anymore, do you? Well, Iâll call my son right now!â
She pulled out her phone and made a call. Before long, someone answered, and the voice of her son, Fred Long, rang, âWhatâs wrong Mom?â
After Mrs. Long told him what had happened, Fred grimaced and said, âI see. Donât worry, Mom, Iâll make him pay!â.
Then Fred shouted into the phone again.
âLiam, I know youâre listening â you can go straight to HR tomorrow to pick up your pink slip! NTT doesnât take people like you.â
With that, Fred hung up.
Mrs. Long grimaced, then looked back at Nora and Liam. She said, âMs. Smith, they fired him entirely because of you!â.
Noraâs eyes were already narrowed. She said dispassionately, âTheyâre not going to fire him.â
Hearing this, Mrs. Long scoffed. âYou think youâre a supervisor at NTT? Youâre saying he wonât be fired?â.
Nora replied, âNTT is known in the industry for being fair and equitable. Liam hasnât made any mistakes, NTT has no right to fire him!â.
Mrs. Long found her words funny. âMy God, how naive you are! Do you think this is utopia? Or do you think youâre in a movie? Not only is NTTâs hierarchy very strict, but Liam is a recent college graduate. He has no one at NTT who can speak for him! My son can easily fire him.â
âReally?â
Noraâs lips curved into a smile. âThen letâs see who gets fired tomorrow!â
