Logan hadnât said a word since they left the garden.
He simply didnât understand why they hadnât gone through an interview.
By the time Miranda had finished speaking, his gaze had turned cold. Her feline eyes were slightly downcast, her long lashes hiding the cold look in them.
She was about to say something when Cherryâs tender childlike voice rang out. Instantly, the corners of Loganâs lips curved upward.
When he saw Mirandaâs smirk freeze, he felt even happier.
At her question, Logan raised his pretty, delicate eyebrows, then replied, âWe didnât go through an interview.â
âYou didnât?â Miranda reacted quickly and said, âIt must be because the letter of recommendation someone else gave you didnât work out, right? Well, that makes sense. After all, whereâs your cousin going to get a letter of recommendation if even the Andersons donât get an interview slot?â
She turned around, pulled a piece of paper out of her purse and handed it to Melissa with one hand. âHere you go, this is the Woodsâ letter of recommendation. Just go to the interview again tomorrow and it will be fine.â
Melissa reached out to take the letter with a look of gratitude. She said, âMiranda, thank youâ¦â.
Before she could touch the letter of recommendation, Mirandaâs grip loosened and the piece of paper fell to the floor.
Miranda immediately covered her mouth and exclaimed, âOh, wow, look at that, Melissa! Why did my hand come loose earlier? Iâll have to trouble you to pick it up.â
After speaking, she sat down on the couch, crossed her legs, straightened her back and looked at Melissa with a huge sense of superiority.
The Woods were a big family. Over the years, thanks to clinging to the Smiths, they were starting to get better and better.
At the time, Miranda and Melissa belonged to the wealthy circle. Melissa and Yvette were well-known, while Miranda was an ordinary person who admired them.
The men she liked then revolved around those two womenâ¦.
But later, Yvette eloped and ruined her own reputation.
As for Melissa, she was blind enough to fall in love with a man as incompetent as Simon and had ignored her familyâs objections and married him.
On the other hand, Miranda had married Melissaâs older brother and had become the Woodâs mistress.
Miranda was very smug about it. Her favorite thing to do was to see the person who had once been at the top, and whom she had needed to look up to, begging for help.
Melissa stood there, hand still outstretched.
She squeezed her fingers. She knew very well that Miranda had done it on purpose. Her pride also refused to let her bow. But when she looked at Noraâ¦
The young woman was cold and aloof. Beautiful and graceful, she looked 80% like Yvette.
Her eyes, in particular, were exactly like Loganâs.
However, that young woman had never had a mother. Her father didnât love her, her stepmother mistreated her, and she had even gotten pregnant before she was married. How could a young woman like her heart not ache?
Melissa looked away and sighed. She was about to squat down to pick up the letter when a slender, beautiful hand grasped her wrist.
The young womanâs voice was cold as she said, âWe have no use for that letter of recommendation.â
The seated Miranda was surprised. âWhy?â
Logan bent down, picked up the letter of recommendation on the floor and threw it in Mirandaâs face. With a horrified look, he said stiffly, âAunt Miranda, you can have the letter of recommendation back! That womanâ¦I mean, Noraâs daughter has been accepted without an interview.â
At first, Miranda was very angry when Logan threw the letter of recommendation in her face, but when she heard what he said, she exclaimed sharply, âSheâs been accepted without an interview? How can that be? In all of New York, aside from the Hunters and the Smiths, the number of families entitled to exemptions can be counted on one hand! Who did you ask for a letter of recommendation?â
Logan also looked at her curiously.
Noraâs indifferent gaze swept over Miranda. Then⦠She let out a big yawn.
Miranda, ââ¦â
After a momentâs hesitation, Melissa asked, âDid you ask Justin to warn them for you?â
Of all the families Nora knew, the only one she could think of in that capacity was Justin Hunt.
Nora clicked her tongue inwardly at his question.
Of course she didnât.
Getting someone to do things for you was the same as consuming favors.
She wasnât going to let him return the favor of saving her grandmother and giving her the Rest Pills so quickly. She was waiting until she owed him enough favors so she could ask her son in the future.
He had merely talked to the kindergarten shareholders, thatâs all.
However, since his aunt had given him an explanation, he couldnât be bothered to say anything more.
He gave Melissa a small smile in response to her assumption. Then she took Cherryâs hand lazily and went upstairs.
Starting the next day, Cherry would have to report to the garden at eight oâclock in the morning.
She had to be up at 7:40 to see her off, so she would have to go to bed early tonight.
Seeing that the two had gone upstairs, Miranda frowned, looked at Melissa, and asked quietly, âWho exactly is your niece? How did she come to meet Mr. Hunt?â
The few large families in New York had known each other for generations, so everyone knew each other.
Still, no one had the nerve to bother Justin with trivial matters.
Seeing that Miranda always looked down her nose at everyone else, Melissa decided to give him a vague answer and replied, âThey met in California.â
Thus, Miranda, who was fawning to those with power and intimidating to those without, would not dare to be rude to Nora any more if they met again in the future.
Seeing that Melissa dared not say anything more, as well as thinking of that young woman who was so beautiful that her face was an eyesore to her; Miranda didnât say much more.
After Miranda left, a concerned Melissa discussed the matter with Logan. âActually, Nora has given Justin five thousand Rest Pills, but he was also intending to help us at the time? Never mind, maybe Iâll give him a call to thank him again.â
Melissa and Simon were Justinâs elders, so he had treated them very politely in California. Because of his good upbringing, he was a very polite man.
However, Melissa also understood that this was mostly based on friendship between those of the older generation. To be honest, given his status, it would actually make more sense for him to ignore them.
Upstairs.
Nora washed her hands and put on her pajamas. She had barely laid down on the soft mattress when she received a call from Justin.
She answered the call. âHello, Mr. Hunt.â
His voice rang in her ear. âHello, Miss Smith.â
Nora had heard many people address her as âMiss Smithâ before, but when his deep, subwoofer-like voice pronounced the two words, coupled with his clear pronunciation, it really had a different charm.
Nora felt like hearing him say a few more words.
She laughed and asked, âIs something wrong?â.
The man continued to speak earnestly. âOh, Aunt Melissa just called to say she wanted to invite me to lunch as a thank you for giving you the letter of recommendation for the International Golden Sun Kindergarten.â
ââ¦â
Nora felt a faint headache coming on.
This was so uncomfortable she wanted to die.
She opened her eyes and looked up at the ceiling with resignation. Just as she was thinking about how she could overlook the incident, the manâs deep voice rang again on the cell phone. âMay I know when Miss Smith plans to invite me to lunch?â
Nora was speechless.
She rolled over in bed and said, âWell, no time like the present. How about tomorrow at noon?â
âOkay.â When Justin finished speaking, he added, âBring your daughter.â
âSure.â Noraâs lips curved mischievously and she said, âBring your son, too.â
