Nora stood upstairs and watched the intense discussion downstairs.
She clearly saw that Justin had trembled slightly when Elder Mrs. Hunt came out.
Nora sighed quietly.
Justin would never have thought that his grandmother, who had raised him to adulthood, would also be part of the group of people plotting against him.
How sad and lonely must that man be surrounded by his so-called relatives right now?
Justin was a man who had always been intriguing and inscrutable, so he didnât say anything.
Iris, however, stared at the group of people. The woman, who now knew the truth, was having a major mental breakdown at the moment, not for her, but for her son.
gⱯlnÏνð®âsâ¤cøm, your destination for tales Her whole body was shaking with rage and she walked up to Herman, reached out and slapped him on the cheek.
Slap!
She put all her strength into the slap, causing Hermanâs head to turn to the side.
Nora saw that Herman could have avoided the slap, but he did not. Instead, he chose to receive it.
Iris shouted, âHerman Hunt, you are so despicable! It doesnât matter that you conspired against me, but how can you conspire even against your own son!â.
Hermanâs head turned to one side. The handprint on his cheek quickly swelled visibly, which showed how furious Iris was.
He looked at Iris calmly. âIris, I donât mind you blaming me for this. Itâs all because Iâm too incapable. Twenty years ago, I didnât have the ability to keep you by my side; twenty years later, I still donât have the ability to keep you with me. When we got married, we had clearly sworn that we would never leave each other for the rest of our lives, but, unfortunately, you have offended someone you shouldnât have.â
When Herman said that, there was sorrow in his eyes as he looked at Iris.
To be honest, hadnât he also loved Iris when he was young?
In fact, one could say that he still loved her.
At that time, both he and Ian had courted Yvette. Later, after Yvette had chosen Ian, he too had been envious of the beautiful love between the two.
Then, he had met Iris.
When he had seen how kind Iris had been to poor boy Philip, his heart had turned over.
Thus, she had made the Hunts approach the Evanses and propose marriage.
Everyone said he had married Iris because he could not accept Yvette as a wife. The only person in New York who was comparable to Yvette at the time had been Iris.
But no one knew that at the time he had only courted Yvette to pick a fight with Ian. With Iris, on the other hand, he had truly fallen in love.
He hadnât expected Iris to accept the proposal either.
Before they were married, Iris had honestly told him that their marriage was political, that she had no feelings for him.
However, Herman had insisted on getting married. At that point, he was already in love with her. He had even sworn that he would treat her well for the rest of his life.
Only he never expected that poor Philip would suddenly become the head of one of the worldâs mysterious families.
Back then, when the Hunts were suppressed by him, how tormented had he been? His father had spent his whole life turning the Hunts into a large and powerful family, but before the company and the family were handed over to him, he had already implicated them?
Herman had indeed deliberately deceived Iris, but at the time he had also suffered great emotional torment.
Iris did not understand Hermanâs complicated look. She simply felt that the man in front of her was simply too shameless.
She glared at him. âIf that were the case, then you should have made things clear to me from the beginning! Even if I had to leave with Justin, I would never drag the Hunts into this!â
But how could Herman stand for them to leave?
He clenched his jaw and narrowed his eyes. âTaking Justin? Justin is my son, Herman Huntâs son! Heâs a Hunt descendant. Thinking of taking him when you become Philipâs property! Not as long as I live!â
Iris really couldnât understand.
It was he who was taking advantage of her and her son, but it was also he who was saying that Justin was his son, so they shouldnât leave.
She thought Herman must be schizophrenic.
She smiled resignedly and asked, âHerman, what do you mean by that?â
Herman looked down and sighed. âWhat do I mean by that, couldnât you have behaved yourself, accepted your fate and stayed in that suburban villa for the rest of your life? That way, you would never have returned to the family, AND you would never have fought with our son for the position of head of the family! But look at you⦠You had already stayed there for the first twenty years, why did you let it all go to waste in the end!â
Iris stared at him, finally understanding what he meant.
It was because of Hermanâs selfish intentions that they hadnât let her go back then!
Since he had given up on Iris, then he could have let her go and pushed her into Philipâs arms. Given Philipâs means, he would have been able to trick Iris into staying with him eventually. but Herman hadnât! Instead, he had used Justin to hold her captive, preferring to imprison her for twenty years in a suburban villa as if she were a canary in captivity, rather than give her true freedom!
He clenched his fists tightly. âHerman, you despicable lowlife!â
Herman narrowed his eyes and took a step forward. âI donât care if you call me despicable or shameless, but Iris, you and your son have only two choices now.â
Iris glared at him. âGo on.â
Justin looked at Herman as well.
Herman sighed and said, âJustin, you are my son, why would I do anything to hurt you? If your mother goes to Philip and asks him to stop harassing us, then Iâll understand that will doesnât exist. My business abroad is enough to support me.â
Iris took a step back.
Even now, Herman still wanted to put her down.
As she contemplated in a daze, she heard Justinâs firm, sonorous voice.
âThatâs impossible. Tell me the second option.â
âYouâ¦!â Herman was practically speechless toward Justin. He pointed his finger at him in the air for a while.
Elder Mrs. Hunt stepped forward and held Justinâs arm. âJustin, my good grandson, accept! Iris had already moved to the suburbs when you were five, and she hasnât cared for you since. Besides, who knows if her heart was already with Philip long ago? You are each otherâs first love, so canât you take it for granted that you give your mother your blessings? Once sheâs gone, the will would be considered non-existent. All these years, it was only under your leadership that the Huntâs could come this far, everyone can see that. If ever your father dares to fight you for the position of head of the family when your mother is gone, Iâll be the first to raise my voice!â
Justin looked at Elder Mrs. Hunt as he spoke.
It wasnât that she didnât love him.
It was that, before she loved him, the Huntâs interests mattered more than anything else.
Justin then looked at Herman.
In all these years, she had barely called him, barely paid him any attention. He had just taken advantage of him all the time.
From the beginning to the end, Iris had been the only one who did things for his sake.
Justin looked at Herman coldly. âTell me the second choice.â
Seeing him like that, Herman said angrily, âYou really are so unreasonable! If you donât accept, even if itâs for the Huntâs sake, Iâll have to go back home and inherit the shares left to me by your grandfather! Justin, by then, I wonât be able to guarantee that Iâll be able to protect you and your mother! Besides, the consequences of you facing Philip will only cause you to overestimate your abilities!â
However, it was as if Justin hadnât heard him.
He merely let out a dismissive sneer.
Herman sighed. âJustin, Iâve worried about you all these years; after all, you are my son. As long as youâre willing to step back and send your mother to Philip, and if your mother can think of a way to appease him, Philip will no longer corner the Hunts. Donât worry, Dad hasnât been with you all these years so he definitely wonât be fighting you, Geez!â
At last there was some real emotion in those words of his.
Herman wasnât a nice person, but he wasnât a total villain who completely despised kinship either.
Justin, however, looked at him and said, âIâm glad you werenât with me when I was growing up.â
Herman was taken aback.
Justin said sarcastically, âAfter all, everyone says like father, like son. If you had been by my side, I too would have become a despicable scum like you who betrayed women to survive.â
His sarcasm made Hermanâs face flush.
He pointed at Justin angrily. âYou! What right do you have to insult me like that? Justin, since you refuse to listen, donât blame your father for fighting you! You have to give me all the property your grandfather left me! You also have to give me the position of head of the family.â
Herman narrowed his eyes. âYouâre still too young and stubborn, so youâre competitive about everything. In that case, Iâll take over the position as head of the family for a few years for you! Youâll be able to inherit it again when I die. Itâs only fair for a son to inherit his fatherâs legacy. Donât worry, I wonât leave you with nothing.â
No sooner had he said that than Justin said coldly, âOh? I can give you all of Grandpaâs estate, but do you think you can become the head of the family just by owning those shares?â
Herman was taken aback. âWhat do you mean?â
