âBecauseâ¦â
Iris had hidden the secret of what happened so many years ago in her heart and had never mentioned it to anyone. Everyone in this world could criticize her, scold her and hate her.
In fact, it was okay even if Justin refused to acknowledge her as his mother. However, the man in front of her was the one person who was not worthy of talking about her relationship with her son.
She glared at Herman, though there was no anger in her. She simply felt that the man couldnât have thicker skin than he already was. She grimaced and said slowly, âItâs all because of the things you did then!â.
Herman frowned as he heard this. âWhat does it have to do with me? Obviously, you were the one who was unfaithful to me!â
âYouâ¦!â
Iris found his words really ridiculous to the extreme. She stared at Herman. Soon after, he sneered, âItâs been twenty years. Your ability to reverse right and wrong as well as twist the truth has improved greatly.â
Herman wanted to speak again, but Lauren came through the door and interrupted their conversation. She said, âThatâs enough. Dear Iris, donât argue anymore. I know you still hold a grudge against Herman, but itâs been twenty years now, so whatâs the point of you doing that to yourself? Justin is all grown up now. What Herman did for you back then is enough. Heâs already given up his entire inheritance to the family estate for the two of youâ¦.. He practically left the family penniless.â
Lauren sighed. âYou donât know how hard itâs been for us to start from scratch being overseas all these years.â
Iris: â?â
What a clever way to put things. Anyone who didnât know better might really have thought Herman was a good man.
Iris was not a tolerant woman. She said eloquently, âHow come I donât remember Herman leaving the Huntâs penniless back then? Werenât the shares of the then company his fatherâs? Just because his father had chosen Justin instead of him as the family heir, somehow he ended up being the one to sign over the assets to me and my son?â
A sharp look crossed Laurenâs eyes. âGosh, you donât understand. It was Herman who took the initiative to withdraw from the fight because he felt he had let you both down. Otherwise, why else would the Old Lord have chosen a boy, who was only five years old, over him?â
Iris was truly speechless at his shameless remark. She scoffed and said, âSo, am I supposed to thank you both?â.
A sullen Herman said, âYou can skip the words of thanks! But what was that way of raising the boy? Just because I was forced to leave and couldnât see Justin anymore, you left him to his own devices? And you ended up causing that boy to become so perverse and domineering?!â
Seeing him criticize her again, Iris was so furious that she even laughed. âI never stopped you from visiting him, but have you ever taken the initiative to contact him in all these years? Your son had probably already ceased to exist in your eyes when he was lost then!â
Herman frowned. âHow can you say that, Iris, isnât it obvious that I didnât contact him because I was afraid you would feel uncomfortable about it? If I contacted him frequently while you, his mother, stayed here as a widow, then he would have hated and resented you even more!â
Iris let out a laugh. Suddenly, she couldnât be bothered to tell him anything anymore. He was simply so capable of twisting all her words.
To Iris, her son was what mattered most to her.
All these years, because she had not been able to be by his side, the child had lacked a motherâs love. She had counted on Herman to be in frequent contact with him. After all, a father played a very important role in a childâs growth.
But she hadnât.
Herman rarely contacted Justin. In fact, he had only called Justin twice in the last twenty years.
He took a deep breath and pointed to the door. âThis is my house. Please leave, otherwise Iâm going to call someone to send him out.â
Justin had told her earlier that he had posted some bodyguards for her nearby.
Due to certain reasons, Iris had agreed to it. The bodyguards were currently standing in front of the door. However, they had not gone in to arrest Herman.
To be honest, this made Iris a little uncomfortable.
Her son must still resent her. That was why he hadnât protected her despite the circumstances.
As she thought, Lauren continued to add fuel to the fire and said, âWell, no matter what happened in the past, now that Justin is grown up, you will have to relate to him in the business market, Herman. Iris, this time we have returned to the United States in part to expand our business in the domestic market. We happen to be able to deal more with the Hunts for some of our operations. They are father and son after all. They will eventually get in touch once they work together, and they will gradually make up for past regrets.â
After saying that, he looked at Iris. âBesides, Justinâs kids are really adorable! You donât know how much fun Cherry is. She loves the princess dress I brought her this morning.â
Irisâs heart contracted.
Was her granddaughter having fun with Lauren?
But as the thought formed, she felt she was being too stiff again.
It was true, even if she and Herman were divorced, that didnât mean Justin had to cut off all contact with him. The Hunts were Hermanâs family, and Elder Mrs. Hunt was his motherâ¦.
I had just thought about that when Lauren spoke again. She said, âBy the way, we donât have a place to stay during our temporary return to America, so weâll be staying at the Hunt Mansion for the time being. You wonât have any objections, will you? Cherry is very good to us, she even said that she likes me, her grandmother, very muchâ¦â
The two had stayed at the Huntsâ house the night before.
Irisâs heart felt even heavier. Then, she heard Lauren sigh and say, âIris, we will be part of the same family in the future. I hope you can let go of all your past grievances so we can all live in peace with each other. That way, Justin wonât feel uncomfortable being in the way either, right?â.
Iris clenched her fists. âWe wonât interfere in each otherâs lives as long as you guys donât come and bother me!â.
Lauren grabbed Hermanâs arm. âWhy would we bother you?â
With a big smile, she said, âHerman, since thereâs nothing more we need with Iris here, then letâs go back. We just need to inform Justin that he doesnât have to worry about Iris being unhappy about it. Letâs get back, Cherry is still waiting for me to play dolls with her!â
Herman nodded, then the two of them turned and left.
As she watched them from behind, Iris felt as if there were needles pricking her heart.
Even though she couldnât get close to her son or grandchildren before, she could live with it somehow. But why should Herman and Lauren be able to stay at Hunt Manor? Why should they be able to play with their granddaughter every day?
Irisâs eyes reddened.
Mrs. Landis approached. She let out a quiet sigh and said, âMaâam, if you keep holding back the truth of what happened then, that scum and that cheap woman will take Mr. Hunt away from you. Look how the bodyguards didnât even stop them from getting in and out of here. It must have been Mr. Huntâs instructions.â
Iris felt even worse.
At that moment, Cherryâs voice was suddenly heard from Mrs. Landisâ phoneâ¦.
Cherry should be broadcasting live right now.
Iris suddenly snatched the phone away from her. She would watch as Lauren was going to interact intimately with Cherry!
