Charles was stunned. Then he said excitedly, âDo you know me? Young lady, how do you know me, how do you know my name is Charles? Haha, do you know, I was very lucky today. The bus overturned and everyone on it was injured, but I didnât get a scratch. I must have saved the world in my previous life.â
That the fifty-year-old should say such things, Nora couldnât help but find it rather odd. Many older people, even if they surfed the Internet a lot, rarely said things like that in real life.
She frowned. âDo you know who I am?â
Charles didnât seem surprised at all. âIt doesnât matter who you are. Isnât what matters the fact that I dodged the bullet today? Do you know how dangerous it was? The brakes on the bus had suddenly failed and it was hurtling straight into a mountain in front of us, you know! The woman in front of me kept screaming in fear, and even I thought she was dead meat. But, unexpectedly, even though the bus overturned, I turned out okay!â.
Nora frowned as she listened to his description of what happened. âHow come youâre okay?â
Charles replied, âI donât know. I was very lucky. The bus overturned and quite a few people were killed outright, did you see that? You donât even have to try to save some of those people who were pushed just a moment agoâ¦geez, you know?â
His expression turned a little nostalgic. âIâm not really a good person. Of course, Iâm not a bad person either. I just did some bad things in the past and helped some bad people in the past. Over the years, Iâve devoted myself to the heavens. And look! The results are showing. The heavens must have watched over me this time, thatâs why I managed to escapeâ¦..â
The more he spoke, the more excited he became. In fact, he looked like he was going to cry bitterly. He said, âWhen I return, I must be even more pious. I will donate all my money to the church.â
None of the other nurses paid any attention to him. Also, apparently because he had met Nora, someone who was willing to listen, he was very emotional.
Nora watched him silently.
It was no wonder Jessica said he was a lunatic. Indeed, something was wrong with his mental health, and he seemed to be crazy.
She narrowed her eyes and asked slowly, âHow much money do you have?â
The man suddenly lowered his voice, but he couldnât seem to control the volume. So, even though he had lowered his voice, it was actually still very loud. He said, âDonât be fooled by my ordinary clothes. I am not an ordinary man. I have a lot of money. I used to work for a very impressive person. More than twenty years ago, he came to pay me as much as $15,000 a month!
â$15,000 a month! Do you know how much $15,000 was worth over twenty years ago? It was worth even more than $150,000 today! It sure paid well then.â
Charles seemed caught up in his memories. He said, âAfter that, I made a lot of money, but I didnât dare spend it. I would have felt guilty if I had spent that moneyâ¦â.
He burst into tears and said, âI got five million dollars, but I hid the money at home. I didnât dare to spend it, you know? But after this accident, I have ordered my thoughts. Do you know that a person has epiphanies in near-death moments? Why didnât I dare to spend that money? All that money belongs to me.â
Nora frowned.
Even if her mother had given her $15,000 a month, that would only amount to $180,000 a year. For her to have five million dollars, she would have had to work for thirty years! And even then. As far as she knew, after her mother passed away, she hadnât given any more money to those three people.
So how was it possible for Charles to have five million dollars in cash!
Also, why did he say he didnât dare spend the money? Where had that money come from? Were they benefits that his mother had given to those people, who had worked under her for years?
But if that was the case, why didnât Old Maddy get any?
She frowned and asked, âWho gave you the money?â
Charles looked at her and then laughed. âI canât tell you, young lady, I just canât. I went against my conscience for that money, so I canât tell youâ¦.. heavens!â
She went against her conscience for that moneyâ¦..
Nora narrowed her eyes.
By this time, all the victimsâ relatives had arrived at the hospital. Some rushed to the operating rooms, while others rushed to the bodies of the people, who had been declared dead, and began to cry bitterly.
Suddenly, the hospital was in chaos again.
As Nora was about to ask Charles something, a voice approached, âCharles, are you okay?â
She turned to see a man in his fifties approaching them. He was standing in front of Charles and looking him up and down. âYou have no family, so they called me instead!â
Charles replied, âWhat can be wrong with me, Iâm fine, Iâm totally fine! Brother, let me tell you, Iâve been very lucky todayâ¦â Charles then began to recount again in detail what had happened that day.
Nora: ââ¦â
The man was very neurotic.
He rolled his eyes and approached the two of them. Just as he was about to ask a question, Charlesâ friend suddenly said, âOkay, okay, I understand. I know youâve been through life and death today, youâre sooooo lucky. But, why are you suddenly so chatty?â.
Nora paused and looked sharply at the two men.
Charles was still chattering on and on in a neurotic manner. âBecause Iâm agitated and excited. I thought I could only be a longshoreman for the rest of my life, did you know that? I thought I didnât deserve happiness anymore. I thought I could only be like you for the rest of my life, Just be a day laborer!â
His friendâs expression changed, âWhat do you mean by that, who are you looking down on?â
Charles was still babbling. In fact, he had even burst into tears, as if emotions he had long kept bottled up were finally bursting forth. He said, âStevedores, of course! Not only is the work backbreaking, but the pay is very low. You may be uneducated, but do you know who I am? I graduated from Hamlin Medical School, you know?â
Hamlin Medical School?!
Nora narrowed her eyes.
Her friend, however, had never heard of that school. âWhy are you freaking out? You must have hit your head, right? Why are you behaving so strangely today? Never mind you chattering on, but all of a sudden youâre talking about a medical school? If you were a high-achieving student, would you have been working as a laborer with us?â
Charles sneered and said, âYes, I am different from you. You see, the heavens are still looking out for me. Even when I had a traffic accident, I didnât get hurt at allâ¦â
Noraâs heart suddenly sank as she listened to his conversation.
She took a big step forward and suddenly asked, âExcuse me, are you usually very quiet?â
Charlesâ friend nodded. âYes. Ramsey talks very little. Itâs odd that heâs so excited. It must have gone to his head.â
As soon as he said that, Nora held Charlesâ hand. Suddenly, she shouted to the doctor standing next to her, âGet a CT scan on him immediately!â.
The doctor was stunned. âWhat?â
The man looked at Charles sharply. âBut he doesnât look hurt!â
Charles also said, âYes, Iâm not hurt. Iâm not going to do a CAT scan, are you a doctor? You just want my money, donât you?â
As soon as he said that, Nora looked at him seriously with a horrible look on her face. He said, âYou graduated from medical school, didnât you? Then let me ask you this: what are the symptoms of intracerebral hemorrhage?â
Intracerebral hemorrhageâ¦.
Charles unconsciously answered, âExcessive secretion of adrenaline, which makes people overexcited. After that, they will bleed from their seven orificesâ¦â
At this point, he suddenly realized something.
Noraâs expression became even more serious.
Yes, thatâs right!
If there was too great a change in Charlesâ personality, he must be suffering from a hemorrhage in the brain!
Internal bleeding was a very serious condition. There was a high probability that it would block blood vessels and form congestions. By the time it was discovered, it would be too late for diagnosis and treatment.
Nora had not immediately discovered Charlesâ abnormal behavior because she had thought he was crazy. After all, according to Jessicaâs description, Charles was a madman. But through talking with his partner, it was known that this was not normally the case. Just from her partnerâs description of him being a quiet man, it fit the personality of the man who had called her. That was how she had suddenly become aware of Charlesâ abnormal behavior.
However, the doctor next to her frowned. âWho are you, why do I have to give you a brain CT scan? Donât you know that people who undergo a CT scan are exposed to radiation? Itâs better for healthy people not to do itâ¦â
After saying that, Nora immediately said, âIâm Anti!â.
The doctor immediately shut up and looked at Charles. Then, suddenly, he picked up his phone and called the upstairs CT department to make arrangements for the man to jump the line.
Nora looked back at Charles.
Charlesâs jaw dropped. He touched his head. At that moment, he could faintly feel something warm coming out of his nose.
He touched it and discovered it was blood.
Only then did he realize something.
His eyes snapped open and he suddenly said, âI get it, I get it now. Itâs them. Theyâre here to silence meâ¦â
Nora grabbed his wrist tightly. âTell me, who is trying to silence you, the mysterious organization?â
At the words âmysterious organizationâ, at last, Carlos focused and looked at Nora. In his excited state just now, after crossing paths with Nora, he had immediately started chatting with her. He had not noticed Noraâs gaze at all.
But at this very instant, he clearly saw Noraâs face.
Her face was 90% similar to Yvetteâs back then.
Her eyes snapped open. âMiss Yvette?â
Noraâs eyes blinked faintly with a sharp glint. âIâm Nora Smith.â
Nora Smith!
The name made Charlesâ pupils shrink.
Unconsciously he said, âYou look a lot like Miss Yvette now that youâve lost weight.â
After sheâd lost weight?
This meant that Charles had definitely seen her a few years ago.
Was it when she was pregnant?
Had her mother made her arrange her pregnancy?
The thoughts flooded her mind.
However, Nora found Charlesâ pupils beginning to dilate. It didnât give her time to ask all the questions she wanted to ask. She could only ask one: âTell me, did I have twins or triplets back then?â.
Charlesâ eyes were beginning to unfocus, as if he could no longer think clearly.
He stared at Nora blankly.
Twins or triplets?
His eyes suddenly reddened and he said, âMiss Nora, I have let you down. I betrayed you then, and I also betrayed Miss Yvetteâ¦. For so many years, I have felt guilty about itâ¦â
But that was not what Nora wanted to hear.
She asked again, âTell me, was she pregnant with twins or triplets?â
Charlesâ eyes were red. Suddenly he smiled and said, âYes, the mysterious organization threatened and bribed me. They gave me five million dollars, but because I betrayed Miss Yvette, I have never spent that money in all these years. Iâm sorry I conspired against you, now Iâm going to repay your kindness! They wanted to silence me, but they did not expect me to meet you before my deathâ¦â
However, what he said next made Noraâs eyes widen in disbelief, but also with enlightenment.
