Chapter 548

Nora1,054 words~6 min read

Nora was reading all afternoon. At five o’clock, Justin called and said Cherry wanted to have dinner with her. A puzzled Nora asked, “So, why don’t you both come?”.

Justin hesitated for a moment, apparently somewhat reluctant to say anything. In the end, however, he said, “I doubt if we can go to the Smiths’. After all, Uncle Ian seems to have quite a bit against me.”

What he said simply made it sound as if he were suffering too much injustice.

Nora suddenly felt a pang of pain in her heart, so she said, “Okay, send me the address. I’ll go with Pete.”

“Okay.”

After hanging up, Justin texted her the address of the restaurant they were going to for dinner.

Nora glanced at it. It wasn’t too far from the Smith mansion.

So she decided to read for another half hour before setting off.

However, perhaps because she was destined to find no peace, her phone suddenly lit up: Johnson had sent her another email inviting her to join the special department.

This time, the email was sent to Black Cat. The email read as follows:

“Hi, Black Cat – have you seen my last email? Even if you are not interested in the US special department, don’t you care if Karl Moore lives or dies?”.

Nora looked at the email and narrowed her eyes. She immediately replied to the email, “What do you mean?

She had always been direct in her writing, and didn’t even bother to add punctuation marks.

The other party quickly replied, “Karl has been arrested for breaking the law in the United States. You must be aware of that, right? Don’t you want to save him? If you agree to join the special department, I can find a way to free him.”

Free Karl?

Nora narrowed her eyes and scoffed.

Did that man think she was a three-year-old girl? Karl had broken the law. Without a reasonable explanation, how could the special department release him?

She narrowed her eyes and replied, “How could you release him?”

Johnson’s response was even quicker this time: “I can make a public statement that he is my informant. Then you can say that it was on my instructions that you brought those people into the country.”

At this, Nora’s pupils shrank sharply.

An informant…

Now that was an impeccable explanation. Besides, it would allow the special department to release him immediately!

But why would Johnson say that Karl was his informant?

Nora frowned. Suddenly, she thought about how Karl had insisted that he was doing it for money when both she and Morris had asked him over and over again why he had illegally brought the people of the mysterious organization into the country After that, Karl had successfully escaped from the special department’s cell….

Could it be that…?

Nora narrowed her eyes. The dark pupils of her feline eyes flickered with a faint glow.

She seemed to have discovered something.

In the special department.

Morris stood in front of the door to the interrogation room, hoping to overhear the conversation taking place inside. Unfortunately, the interrogation room was soundproof, so he couldn’t hear anything.

He wanted to know what the two were talking about, but as soon as Johnson had entered, he had turned off the surveillance cameras, so Morris couldn’t find out what Johnson and Karl were talking about.

His eyebrows scrunched tightly together. After waiting for about half an hour, Johnson finally left the room.

Morris hastily stepped forward and asked, “Did you get anything out of him?”

Johnson looked at Morris and shook his head. “He’s still refusing to talk.”

Morris suggested, “I would suggest hiring Nora Smith back on the team. She knows Karl. She made up her mind to talk the other time.”

Johnson grimaced as he listened to what she said. “She’s a medical examiner, so it’s not like she’s part of the interrogation process. Why would we ask her to come back? To watch the special department make a fool of itself? I’ll tell you one thing: I don’t agree with it!”

Then Johnson pointed at him and said, “The one we need most right now is Black Cat. I’ve stressed this many times before! To ask a doctor to be a forensic expert? Are you trying to be funny? Does she have any experience in solving criminal cases? Or have the people in the special department become so poor that they can’t even afford to see a doctor when they’re sick?”

Morris clenched his jaw. Johnson’s words struck him as too unpleasant.

He took a deep breath. “Captain Johnson, you are prejudiced against Nora!”

Her manner of addressing him had changed from ‘Sir’ to ‘Captain Johnson’, which showed that Morris had taken a dislike to him.

“Yes, I do! She was simply too unprofessional at the wedding! We don’t need someone like her! Ha!”

Morris glared at Johnson. “Don’t be so sure. Never offend a doctor.”

Johnson scoffed, “Heh, are you threatening me? I’ll tell you this, the thing I’m least afraid of is getting sick! I’m in great health and I’ve never gotten sick in all these years! Even if I fall ill, I will never ask you to treat my illness!”

After saying this, he left the room immediately.

But as soon as he reached the door, his vision went black and he suddenly fainted and collapsed!

“Captain Johnson!”

“Captain Johnson!”

Amidst the chaos, Johnson was sent to the hospital.

Nora drove Pete to the restaurant.

When they arrived, for the first time, Justin wasn’t there before them. Nora didn’t lose her temper at having to wait. She took Pete into the private room.

They were in a Japanese restaurant. The solid wood decor of the private room looked very comfortable.

Pete took off his shoes and began writing his homework cross-legged. As he did so, he asked, “Mommy, why does the tyrant insist that we have dinner together tonight?”

Nora was about to reply that she didn’t know either when the door was pushed open. Cherry rushed in first. She blinked her big round eyes and looked at Nora. Then she said excitedly, “Mommy, quick, look at Daddy! What part of him is different today?”
