How had he escaped?
Everyone knew there was a traitor in the special department.
Did Karl intend to confess and ask for clemency?
By the looks of it, for Tanyaâs sake, he had indeed reflected and made up his mind.
Nora and Morris were about to speak when the door to the interrogation room suddenly opened. A middle-aged man, who appeared to be in his mid-fifties, came striding in.
The man, who looked furious, stared at Nora immediately upon entering. He said, âWhatâs wrong with you? As a member of the special department, even if you are an externally hired medical examiner, you shouldnât let someone point a gun at you.â
Nora frowned as she looked at him.
Morris took the floor at that point. He said, âThis is Captain Johnson, who is also my mentor. He was the one who guided me when I first entered this line of work.â
Nora looked at the man.
So he was the one who had ordered the sniper to fire a moment ago?
The manâs aura was identical to Morrisâs, both were cold, steely men. But, for some reason, Nora didnât like him very much.
Morris looked at Johnson and slowly explained, âCaptain Johnson, Miss Smith is an externally contracted medical examiner. She is only in charge of studying and researching the genetic modification drugs that the special department investigates and confiscates. Therefore, it is quite understandable that she is not able to keep up in terms of physical strength.â
Johnson stared at Nora. âShe canât keep up in terms of physical strength? The way I see it, sheâs a spy. Why did she block Karl Mooreâs bullet just now?â
Nora raised her eyebrows, her almond eyes looking somewhat innocent. âWhat bullet?â
Johnson spat, âYou put yourself in the line of fire between him and the sniper to help him! Stop pretending.â Nora said, âWhat are you talking about, Captain Johnson? Iâm just a weak, impotent, externally hired medical examiner-how could I possibly know the trajectory of the bullet from the sniperâs rifle?â
His words made Johnson gag.
However, Morris, who was standing next to her, gave her a cold stare.
Nora continued to stand where she was and feigned innocence. Johnson was furious. He pointed at her and ranting at Morris. âLook how she uses her ignorance to justify her actions! We donât need someone like her in the special department.â
Morris scowled.
At that point, Johnson spoke again. He said, âBesides, Karlâs escape is definitely an inside job. In that case, who is the traitor in the department? Judging by how well she cooperated with Karl today, it might be her!â
Morris immediately said, âWatch what you say, sir! As a policeman, we mustnât say anything without evidence.â
âHahâ¦â Johnson was probably terribly indignant. He said, âThen we wonât discuss this today. Iâve already thoroughly investigated Miss Smithâs background on the way over here, and Iâll tell you now: sheâs not fit for the special department!â
Morris frowned. âSir, youâ¦â
Johnson raised his hand and stopped Morris from speaking. He said, âListen to my reasons for saying that first! Nora Smithâs mother is Yvette Anderson. and Yvette Anderson is someone we can confirm was a member of the mysterious organization back then! That alone makes Nora Smith unfit to remain in the special department!â
âHer mother is a suspect, so what she needs to do is stay away and avoid suspicion! But what are you doing instead? Youâre letting someone who should avoid suspicion be part of the case! Is this what Iâve taught you?â
Morris clenched his jaw.
Johnson pointed to the special department regulations and asked, âMorris, what is rule seven of the special department regulations?â
Morris straightened his back immediately and recited aloud, âAll immediate or collateral relatives of persons involved in special department cases must stay away from investigations to avoid suspicion!â
Johnson pointed out to him, âDo you still think she is suitable to remain in the special department?â
Morris still wanted to explain. âButâ¦â.
âNo buts!â
Johnson looked at Nora aggressively and said, âNora Smith, you are fired! Please immediately return all your credentials to the special department and leave! You are not allowed to conduct any further private investigation into the case!â
Nora: â?â
She looked at Karl, who was sitting down.
It was clear that Karl wanted to tell them something just now. Was he forbidding her to listen?
She looked at Morris again. He took a deep breath and said, âMiss Smith, come back for the moment. After I discuss this with Captain Johnson, Iâll call you back.â
âHa!â Johnson scoffed, âSheâs nothing but a weak, impotent girl who only knows how to be a burden to the team at critical moments! Whatâs the purpose of inviting a person like her back?â
Morris sighed.
Now Nora understood.
It seemed Johnson had the last word in the special department.
He raised his eyebrows, pulled the special departmentâs personnel pass out of his pocket and handed it to Morris.
When Morris took it from him, he lowered his voice and said, âDonât worry, give me some time. Iâm sure Iâll let you come back in style.â
His mentor had been transferred to the special department out of the blue this time.
The special department did not originally have a direct leader. Morris arguably dominated the team. With the sudden appearance of an obstacle like him, he needed some time to regain his authority in the special department!
Nora looked at him. Her lips suddenly curved into a smile and she said, âNo, itâs okay.â
Sheâd had enough of being an externally hired medical examiner â did they really think she cared?
If she had that much time on her hands, she might as well go home and get a good nightâs sleep. Sheâd already taken up too much of her time.
She glanced back at Karl and saw that he was waving at her relaxedly. âGo back and tell Tanya Iâll be fine, Nora. Tell her to wait for me to come home calmly.â
Nora didnât know where his confidence came from, but she turned and walked out of the interrogation room nonetheless.
As she left, Morris looked at Johnson and said, âYouâll regret the decision youâve made today, sir!â
Johnson scoffed, âSheâs nothing but a useless child â why should I regret anything?â
At that moment, someone knocked on the door and entered. He sighed and said, âCaptain Ford, those bodyguards we arrested the other day are too tight-lipped. They simply refuse to say anything.â
Morris frowned.
At that point, Johnson â who had been transferred to the department out of the blue â to show off his skills â said, âIf it comes to interrogations, I have a particularly good candidate to name!â
âWho?â asked Morris.
Johnson lowered his head and replied, âBlack Cat.â
Black Cat?
Morris looked unconsciously at Karl. Black Cat was the top assassin in Karlâs organization! Now that Karl had been stopped, how could Black Cat be willing to help them?
As he thought about it, Johnson smiled triumphantly and said, âDonât worry, I can get Black Cat to help us! People like Black Cat, with a talent for investigations and interrogation methods, are what the special department needs most. Morris, youâre too short-sighted â that girl who does scientific research is nothing compared to Black Cat! Iâm sure I can find Black Cat and bring him to the department!â
