Brendaâs eyes widened in amazement. She rubbed her eyes in disbelief and muttered, âHuh? Am I seeing things?â
But when she opened her eyes again, Cherry and Pete were still standing together in front of her.
She felt a little overwhelmed for a moment. âThere are two⦠two Petes?â
Cherry let out a small sigh. âAunt Brenda, I told you, Iâm not Pete! Iâm Cherry! Cherry Smith!â
Cherry Smith⦠Wasnât that the extra baggage Nora was about to bring to the Hunts?
But why would she be exactly like Pete?
Brenda was still in a daze under the crystal chandelier of the Smith mansion. Pete had already let go of Mia and was running ahead of Cherry. He grabbed the dazed Cherry and shielded her behind him. âWhat are you doing to my baby sister, Aunt Brenda?â.
Brenda: â?â
She blinked. It finally dawned on her. âYou and Cherry are⦠twins? In that case, is Nora your mom?â
Pete frowned and looked at her like she was mentally handicapped. âOf course. Havenât I been calling her Mommy all day?â
To Pete, the woman he called Mommy was the woman who had given birth to him. He was completely unfamiliar with the concept of stepmother.
Brenda: ââ¦â
She looked at Cherry again. Suddenly, she flashed her a charming smile and said, âHahahaha! Now I have a little niece too! Cherry, right? Come on, I still have several cute boys here that I havenât shared with you!â
Cherry took a step forward to walk towards Brenda. However, Pete held her hand and said, âCherry, didnât Daddy already tell you to stay away from Aunt Brenda? Sheâll lead you astray.â
Brenda: ââ¦â
The corners of her lips tightened and she couldnât help but look at Pete. âWhat are you saying?â
Cherry interjected as well. âBut I find Aunt Brenda very nice!â.
ââ¦What part of her is nice?â said Pete.
They had just met and probably hadnât even managed to talk much, and he already found her âvery niceâ?
Cherry said, â⦠Aunt Brenda talks to me about cute boys! She also promised me sheâd take me to see cute boys.â
Pete: ââ¦â
Cherry stepped around Pete and walked over to Brenda. The two put their heads together and began chatting animatedly again.
Pete sighed quietly at the sight of her.
At that moment, Mia walked up to him and asked, âWhatâs wrong, Pete?â
Pete sighed quietly and said, âItâs nothing, Mia. Remember to stay away from Aunt Brenda. Donât let her lead you astray.â
Mia nodded immediately. âOkay, everything Pete says is right! Iâll listen to you!â
Pete looked at the polite, level-headed Mia, then at Cherry, who was already talking about cute boys with her aunt. He pulled out his phone, opened the chat with the tyrant and texted, âDad, Cherry and Aunt Brenda have already become close friends.â
Sure enough, Justin called Brenda the next moment.
The dial tone began to ring.
Cherryâs puzzled voice rang out, âAunt Brenda, who is Person-Chapada-a-la-Antigua?â
Brenda dismissed the call and replied with a big smile, âWe donât have to listen to her!â
Who else could it be?
The guy who was always trying to talk her out of being the queen of jerks, of course!
For Justin to call at a time like this, he was surely planning to threaten her to stay away from Cherry, so why would she answer the call?
After Brenda had spent over an hour with Cherry, Nora finally came downstairs after settling work matters.
As soon as she did, she discovered that Brendaâs attitude toward her had come full circle. She made eyes at Nora and asked, âNora, you were already in a relationship with Justin six years ago, werenât you?â
â⦠I guess,â Nora replied.
Although she had no impression of him, nor had she met him then, the two had had children between them.
The next moment, Brenda sighed and said, âMy heart goes out to you, Nora.â
Nora: â?â
Brenda held Cherry in her arms. As the two continued to stare at the phone, she said, âThe two of us can openly admire handsome boys, but you on the other hand are bound by marriage to Justin! What else can women expect in life when they can no longer change boyfriends?â
Nora: ââ¦â
âForget it. Now that Iâve kidnapped Cherry, Justin is already close to his limit. If I kidnap you too, heâll probably explode.â
Brenda cocked her head and winked at Nora. âBut since youâre my sister-in-law, I can help you with the job.â
Nora: â?â
Brenda said, âMorris is a workaholic and a cold, relentless machine. He has very demanding job requirements. Since he has hired you as the teamâs forensic doctor, Iâm sure he will be very strict with you in the future. Donât worry, though, because Iâm here! Leave it to me.
Was Morris very strict?
Aside from the other time heâd forbidden her to leave her cell, heâd been very nice to her otherwise. Even when sheâd gone for revenge and killed someone at the martial arts tournament the other time, heâd pretended not to see anything and hadnât made things difficult for her.
However, Nora couldnât be bothered to explain anything, so she replied, ââ¦. Oh, okay.â
The next moment, Brendaâs expression suddenly became suddenly solemn and she said earnestly, âNora, the organization we deal with is very mean, though. As soon as they find out youâre on the team too, they may come after you.â
She lowered her head and smiled, âI came back to the States because I found some leads. My informant told me that someone from that organization has returned to the United States.â
Nora nodded upon hearing this. She asked, âHow are we going to look for them?â
âWhy were we going to look for them?â
Brenda waved with a practiced gesture. She rested her chin on both hands and blinked at Nora. âConsidering how beautiful we both are, they sure take the initiative to come looking for us.â
Nora: â?â
Seeing her puzzled expression, Brenda smiled and said, âNever mind, I wonât tease you anymore. Considering the number of people coming in and out of the country every day, we surely wonât have any clue as to who the person in the organization is. Therefore, what we must do now, is to wait. We will wait for him to slip away himself. Since heâs back in the country, surely heâs not back just on vacation, is he?â
Only then did Nora understand what he meant.
The other party would surely be up to something, and once he went into action, he would surely leave traces of his activity. She nodded her head in agreement.
Brenda was indeed very deserving of her position as captain. Even if she looked delicate, beautiful and rogue-like, she had a lot of experience in these things!
Only⦠she couldnât help but wonder from which direction they would choose to act.
For some reason, Nora had a vague feeling that they would target her.
But the people around herâ¦. The Smiths were already under protection. The Andersons were also under the protection of the Smiths and the Hunts. As for the Hunts, they had even tighter security. It seemed that the only opening they could target wasâ¦. Tanya?
Nora immediately looked at Pete and Mia. âPete, Mia, whereâs Tanya?â
Pete replied, âMrs. Jones kept her after the garden. She said she wanted to talk to her, so we were told to go home first.â
Mrs. Jones⦠Jill?!
Why was she approaching Tanya again?
Nora frowned.
ð ð ð ð ð
Tanya was stopped by Jill as soon as she left the kindergarten.
She frowned and looked at the woman.
Jill said, âLetâs talk.â
Tanya replied, âWe have nothing to talk about.â
Jill suddenly said, âDonât you want to know why Iâve always treated you badly? Donât you want to know how you were born?â
