Joel saw her grave expression and put down his fork. He stared at her. âWhat?â
His heart suddenly pounded violently.
He didnât know what Tanya was going to say, let alone what she was thinking⦠but he suddenly felt that what she was going to say next was very important.
Tanya looked at the man and said impulsively, âWe had aâ¦â
The word âsonâ hovered in her mouth for a moment, but she couldnât say it.
Joel was stunned. âWhat?â
He searched his memory hard. Did they have an agreement? An oath? Or what?
He was afraid heâd upset the girl in front of him if he didnât remember.
Tanya opened her mouth.
Suddenly she thought of the parents who had been searching for their children overseas.
Some of the mothers were collapsed, and some of the fathers were very calm. However, she had seen them turn around and secretly cry in a corner after comforting their wives.
Suddenly she asked, âYou love Mia very much, donât you?â
Joel didnât know why she had suddenly changed the subject, but he still played along and said, âYes, I love her very much.â
Suddenly, he reached out and took her hand. âI know I will never let her down in this matter. Her existence is something I canât control, but her existence makes me feel warm. Tanya, itâs a kind of satisfaction from family ties. You understand me, donât you?â
How could Tanya not understand?
After all, she and Joel were children who lacked love!
Even though Joel had been born to the Smiths, his parents didnât love him. There was even a time when they thought of abandoning him, which made him feel very insecure.
As for Tanyaâ¦
After her mother remarried, she lost her home.
When the two of them walked together back then, didnât it seem like they were hugging each other for warmth?
Thatâs why she felt so happy when she gave birth to that little angel and thought she finally had a family in this world and someone with her blood.
Thatâs why she had looked for her son all over the world like a madwoman without seeing him even once.
When Joel saw that she was in a strange mood, he mistakenly thought that Tanya would be upset that he mentioned Mia. He thought about it and said, âI know itâs very selfish of me to make you accept Mia, but Tanya, Mia is really a very obedient girl. Youâre going to fall in love with her. Reallyâ¦â
I was afraid Tanya would suggest sending the girl away.
As much as he loved Tanya, he couldnât do that.
After all, he was a father!
Seeing that he had misunderstood, Tanya waved her hand and said, âThatâs not what I meant.â
As soon as she said this, Joel let out a sigh of relief. It was obvious how much he liked Mia.
Tanya asked again, âDo you like kids?â
Joel nodded. âOf course. If she were our daughter, Iâd like her even more.â
These words made Tanyaâs heart ache again.
She lowered her head and took a bite of noodles.
The hot noodles slipped into her mouth, but she took another bite as if she didnât know it was hot.
He ate bite after bite. When he finished, he looked up.
Joel asked, âWhat did you say we have?â
Tanya pulled out a handkerchief and wiped her mouth before replying, âItâs nothing.â
Joel immediately tried to recall some vow the two of them had made. However, after thinking for a while, he still couldnât remember.
After eating the noodles, Tanya picked up her bowl and washed it in the kitchen. Then, she said, âItâs getting late, you should go back.â
Joel: ââ¦â
He really didnât want to leave tonight, but as Tanya had said, if he insisted on staying, it would only make Tanya upset.
Thinking about this, Joel decided he had to take things slow and not do it all at once.
He took the keys out of the car and walked slowly to the door. âGood night.â
âGood night.â
Tanya answered softly in the kitchen.
She heard Joel walk to the door and stand there for a long time. Finally, she pushed the door open. When she heard the door slam shut, she turned off the faucet.
He stayed in the kitchen for a long time before leaving.
Looking at the neat apron hanging in the living room, she thought of Joelâs OCD personality and couldnât help but look down.
She sighed heavily and went upstairs.
He lay down on the couch and silently contemplated the night sky.
She didnât know where in the world her son was right now, if he was hungry, or if he had clothes to wear. She didnât know how long she was thinking when suddenly her phone rang.
He picked it up and glanced at it. It was a call from Hillary.
He answered the call and Hillaryâs calm voice came through. âAre you two still together?â
Tanya scoffed and said quietly, âYes, sheâs taking a shower, why?â
âYouâre lying!â
Hillary suddenly smiled and said, âI just called Mia and she told me Dad came home! Tanya, Iâm warning you â stay away from Joel! Even though youâve seduced him now and he still likes you, Mia is the person he loves the most!â
Tanya clenched her fists.
She lowered her gaze. Before she could say anything, Hillary said, âMia is everything to him! So what if the two of you still have feelings for each other? At the end of the night, wonât he still be obediently going home and coaxing the little girl to sleep? Tanya, if you know whatâs good for you, youâd better leave him.â
Tanyaâs voice was very low. âWhat if I donât know?â
âYou donât know, do you know that everyone outside knows that he and I are engaged and that Mia is our daughter?! For Miaâs sake, he wonât even announce our separation to the public! In front of outsiders, Iâll always be Mrs. Smith! And you, Tanya, are just one of his mistresses! What makes you think your status is enough to make him give up his reputation?â
ð ð ð ð ð
On the Joneses.
After Hillary shouted this in anger, she finally felt calm. She scoffed and said, âNo matter what, Iâll always be the wife, And youâll just be a mistress! Just like then, Iâm the daughter of a rich family, And youâre just a fake daughter!â.
With that, she hung up.
She had been kicked out of the Smiths for a long time. There was a lot of conjecture out there, but because of Mia, the Smiths had never spread the news that they had broken off the engagement.
I wanted to use this affair to shake Tanya up and let her know that she was nothing to Joel.
Any woman would care about this, right?
As I was thinking about this, the doorbell rang.
The servant went to answer the door and exclaimed in surprise, âMr. Smith?â
Hillary was stunned. She turned around and saw Joel walking through the door!
It was already very late. Why was he at the Jones residence?
