Blood from the umbilical cord?
Nora was slightly shocked to hear that. She said, âMy umbilical cord blood still exists?â.
Lisa nodded. âYes. Mom says that back then, when Aunt Yvetteâ¦when your mother gave birth to you, she had insisted on banking your umbilical cord blood. To be honest, it wasnât a popular practice in the country at that time and it wasnât promoted much in hospitals either, so it was very expensive. However, she was adamant about it and said you would need it in the future. Mom had said you definitely wouldnât need it, so she wasnât supposed to say thatâ¦â
Lisa had also been a little surprised when she heard from Irene.
Cord blood banking was a kind of insurance. No one would want it to be used.
After all, once one needed it, it would mean one had blood disorders.
So how could Noraâs mother say something like that back then?
As she thought about it, she saw Noraâs eyes light up. The womanâs lips slowly curved into a smile and she said, âWhat a coincidence. I happen to need it.â
Lisa: â?â
She was stunned. Suddenly, her eyes reddened and she said, âNora, could it be that youâ¦youâ¦?â
It was no wonder Nora had lost so much weight and was always so lethargic. Also, she was not in a good mood and was so pale that it looked like all the blood had drained from her face. Did she have a blood disorder?
As her imagination ran wild, Nora said, âIâm not sick. I just need it for something, thatâs all.â
Lisa: â???â
Before she could realize it, Nora had already picked up her phone and called Lily. She asked, âWhere are you?â
Lily replied, âIâm organizing your operations schedule. There are a few I can do, so Iâve avoided them for you â whatâs up?â
Nora said, â⦠Find some time to go to California. Go to the hospital and get my cord blood from the cord blood bank, and then do another DNA test.â
âDo you really still have your cord blood? My God, your mother is so amazing, did she expect you to need it?â.
Nora narrowed her eyes. âMaybe.
If not, why would Yvette insist on banking her umbilical cord blood back then?
These days, she kept feeling there was a purpose behind all her motherâs arrangements.
She couldnât help but think about what Morris had said at the police station. Was her mother really involved with the so-called âmystery organizationâ? And did she even participate in their experiments on humans?
Noraâs gaze turned a little cold at the thought, and even her tone became a little impatient. She said, âGo as soon as you can.â
Lily, who heard the change in her emotions, was so frightened that she dared not say anything more. She immediately replied respectfully, âOkay, Iâll leave for California right away. Iâll be able to submit the most recent DNA test results no later than tomorrow.â
âOkay.â
Nora hung up. She rubbed her temples and suppressed her irritability. Then, she looked at Lisa. She was about to speak when a voice suddenly reached them.
âNora! Are you awake? Oh, Noraâs cousin, youâre here again!â
She and Lisa turned in unison to see Louis entering from outside.
His blond hair was exceptionally dazzling. The eyes on his handsome face lit up a little at the sight of Lisa.
As for Lisa, she reacted like a mouse that just saw a cat and didnât even dare to look directly at him. She looked at Nora as if she was complaining and said, âNora, didnât you say he wouldnât be here?â
Nora: â?â
Before she could speak, Louis had approached them. He said, âYeah, I wasnât originally planning on coming back tonight either. But Lucy called me and told me that Nora was asking if I would be home tonight, so I turned Chester down when he asked me out and I came back especially for her!â
Lisa: â!!!â
Nora: â!!!!â
Nora wanted to say something, but Lisa had already jumped up and said, âNora, I⦠I suddenly remembered that I have a paper I have to write. Itâs very urgent, so Iâm going first! Mom was very worried about you, but now that I see youâre well, both Mom and I will be relieved!â
Then she turned and fled for the door. âTell us if anyone bullies you. Iâll leave first.â
Nora: ââ¦â
She had planned to chat with Lisa that night, but unexpectedly, she had left just like thatâ¦.
She took a step forward, intending to see her off. But as soon as he did, Louis said excitedly, âYou donât have to lower yourself to do something like that. Let me do it. Iâll fire her.â
After saying that, he chased after Lisa and said, âNoraâs little cousin, shall I take you back to college?â
Lisaâs voice got longer after that. âN-no, you donât have to.â
âYou donât have to be formal! Come on, get in the car.â
âWe donât know each other that well. Iâll call for a cab. Thanks.â
Louisâ annoyed voice came through. âWhy wouldnât we be familiar with each other? You took my first kiss, you know?â
Panic entered Lisaâs voice. âWhat nonsense are you talking, stop that!â
Louis laughed and said, âNo, I canât. I have something to ask you. Do you want to get in the car and we can talk while weâre on our way there, or shall I ask you right here while you call a cab?â
âYou, you, youâ¦â Lisa stammered forever, but finally got into the car quietly. Soon after, the sound of the engine starting up sounded and they drove off.
Nora, who had been listening to their business in the living room for a while: ââ¦â
What exactly did Louis do to Lisa the night before?
She shook her head and went upstairs.
After some thought, she finally decided to knock on Maureenâs door.
Maureenâs eyes were still red when she opened the door. She had obviously been crying. Nora was about to say a few words to comfort her when Maureen flashed her a wry smile and said, âTell me, Nora, do you think everything will be all right if Warren and I move out?â
Even though Warren loved and respected Ian like a father, even though Warren and Joel got along great, Maureen really couldnât stand being here anymore, after being bullied by Yvonne over and over again.
It wasnât like her family was poor either, so why would she let anyone bully her here?
Nora wanted to say something, but Maureen said, âNever mind, ignore what I said. Warren and Joel are very close. Neither one of them would want to leave Miaâ¦. I canât do something like that just for meâ¦â
Nora was silent.
Warren returned at that moment.
He was carrying a matcha cake. As soon as he got upstairs, he said, âOh, Noraâs here too? I happened to have bought a matcha cake. Itâs Maureenâs favorite. You can eat it together⦠Darling, whatâs the matter, why are your eyes red?â
Maureen turned around. Then she forced a smile and said, âItâs nothing. I just got something in my eyesâ¦â
Warren walked over to her and circled around her, âWhatâs gotten into your eyes? Whatâs wrong with you? Did someone bully you?â
As soon as he said that, Maureenâs eyes immediately reddened.
She was about to say something when Yvonne opened the door and stepped out. She sighed and said, âItâs just a dress, Maureen. If you like it so much, then Iâll let you have it, OK?â.
She lowered her head and her eyes reddened. âJoel has already forfeited my rights to run the house anywayâ¦. I no longer have a place in this family.â
