Pete went into a full-blown panic. It was too hard to come up with a reasonable answer.
Just as the other three people in the room were staring at him, and as Cherry was shooting him frantic glances, Pete suddenly thought of the bossy CEO romance novels he had known in the past. Thus, his next words came easily to him:
âIt was because she âcouldnât help it,â and because she âcouldnât control her feelingsââ¦â
His words were rather hesitant at first, but the more he spoke, the brighter his eyes shone and the more confident he sounded. He said, âItâs because mom likes you! Yes, thatâs exactly why!â.
Nora: â??????â
She was about to contradict him when Cherry ran up and held her hand. She looked at Justin and said, âDad, itâs because Mom likes you so much that she had to do something like this. Youâre not going to stop us from seeing mom in the future, are you?â.
Nora: ââ¦â
Even though she had been made the scapegoat, the truth was that she wanted to know Justinâs opinion on the matter.
If that idiot took a step back as a result, he wouldnât end up in a situation where she couldnât resist him eitherâ¦.
As she thought about it, the cold aura around Justin was diminishing. He looked at her in a friendly way and asked, âIs it true what they say?â.
Nora: ââ¦â
She felt that, since they had broached the subject, she could say everything.
But before she could say anything, Cherry nodded repeatedly and said, âItâs true, itâs true! Mom really likes you, Dad. Mom kept complimenting you before we met you. She even said you were very handsome, attractive and tender. Youâre the number one heartthrob in the world!â
Nora: â!!!â
When had she ever said anything like that?
âCough.â Cherryâs words seemed to have given Justin quite a scare as well. He let out a low cough, looked at Nora and said, âThatâs too explicit of you.â
Nora: ââ¦â
It didnât matter.
She would put up with it.
She had barely quietly suppressed her anger when Justin asked, âBut since you like me so much, why donât you believe in marriage?â
Nora: â?â
Was there no end to the manâs questions?
Her eyebrows drew together and a sharp look crossed her eyes. He sneered, âThereâs no correlation between liking someone and getting married, is there, Mr. Hunt? Who says people who donât believe in marriage canât date?â
Hearing her sarcasm and the sound of her gnashing her teeth, Justin knew immediately that they had to end it here for today. Otherwise, once he really pissed her off, the chances of them being together would be even less.
It was the first time in all these years that he had fallen in love with a woman. He shouldnât let her slip away.
Justin pretended to suddenly realize and said, âI see.â
Suddenly, Nora asked, âSince you claim I annoyed you back then, where did I make such a nuisance of myself, Mr. Hunt?â
Justin raised his eyebrows.
How was he to know?
He didnât even know how sheâd gotten pregnant.
That night didnât even exist in his memory, OK?
In any case, even if he did know, he didnât know what the woman was thinking at the time, so he had deliberately lied.
However, he was not to give her the impression that his words had any gaps in them. So, he smiled and answered suddenly, âIn California.â
âWhat California hotel was it?â
Justin gave her a seemingly amused look. âAre you thinking of reliving the moment, Miss Smith?â.
Nora: â!!!â
She took another deep breath and struggled to tell herself, âStay calm, stay calm. Donât get angry.â
Finally, she said, âI was just asking.â
Justin, however, stepped forward. âThe past is in the past, we have to look to the future. You donât have to keep reminiscing about that night five years ago, Miss Smith. If you deem it necessary, we can consummate it right away.â
Consummate it?
Pete and Cherryâs eyes lit up at the same time. But as soon as they wanted to speak, Nora said coldly, âNo, itâs okay.â
She gritted her teeth and spat out word after word, âI donât find it necessary, My Sworn Nephew.â
Justinâs face instantly turned green.
Upstairs.
Iris and Mrs. Landis poked their heads out and did their best to listen to the voices downstairs.
Unfortunately, their voices were too low, so they couldnât hear what they were saying at all. Iris looked at Mrs. Landis. âWhy does the situation downstairs feel a little weird?â
â⦠It feels a little weird to me too. Surely there wasnât a dramatic love-hate relationship between Mr. Justin and Miss Smith back then, was there? Have they reconciled now? Maâam, donât you think what happened to Miss Smith sounds like the tale of a pretty wife running away with a baby in her belly?â
âDonât talk nonsense! Your story is much more exciting than a novel.â
Mrs. Landis: ââ¦â
The two listened again to the voices below. Seeing that nothing seemed to be happening anymore, Mrs. Landis asked, âShall we go downstairs and get ready for dinner, maâam?â
Iris nodded. âYes. Letâs go down and have a look.â
As soon as they went downstairs, however, they saw Nora sitting on the sofa triumphantly with her arms folded. There was a small smile on her usually cold and distant countenance.
Justin, on the other hand, looked furious.
It was clear that Nora seemed to have won the confrontation at that moment.
Mrs. Landis coughed and called, âMiss Smith, Mr. Hunt and the two little gentlemen. Shall we go to dinner?â
Nora stood up. âSure, I happen to have gotten hungry.â
After speaking she looked at Iris and asked, âShall we have dinner sis?â.
Iris: â?â
Why did the temperature in the room suddenly seem to drop a few degrees when she said the word âSisâ?
She looked at Justin, who was making a long face, and the corners of her lips tightened. She coughed and said, âUm, I didnât know about your relationship with Justin previously. Considering the current situation, weâ¦â
âThose are two separate issues,â Nora replied casually but confidently. âIn the future we will keep the terms of the relationship separate. Mr. Hunt wonât mind, will he?â.
Justin replied, ââ¦. No, I donât mind.â
Iris: ââ¦â
The group settled at the dining room table.
Pete and Cherry sat next to each other. When they looked at the tyrant and Mom sitting at the same dining room table, they suddenly felt much happier than usual!
Unfortunately, the adults didnât feel that sense of happiness at all.
When they finally finished dinner and the group left, Justin asked coldly, âSo, Peteâs going with you? And my daughterâs coming with me?â
Nora breathed a sigh of relief at his words.
At least that guy wasnât asking for both kids.
Otherwise, she would have really exploded.
What kind of horrible evening was this, she felt so frustrated!
She had never felt so frustrated in her entire life!
She nodded her head. âThatâll do.â
She took Peteâs hand after speaking. As she was about to leave, she stopped and looked back at Iris. âDonât tell anyone else about this for now, sis.â
Justin paused. He was about to tell Iris, too, but unexpectedly, Nora had beaten him to it.
Therefore, he decided not to say anything.
It was not convenient for so many people to protect Pete while he was with Nora. Therefore, the identity of the children had to be kept secret.
Iris nodded.
On the way home with Pete, Nora suddenly received a text message on her phone.
She glanced at it as she came to a red light, but the moment she did, she froze.
The text message read, âDo you want to know how you got pregnant then?
