Chapter 36: Birds That Drop Bombs

The Life Of A German SoldierWords: 2277

"Ernst!" yelled Albert as he watched Ernst get dragged away.

There was nothing Albert could do, he would die if he moved. He closed his eyes and held his hands over his ears. His name was still being yelled by Ernst but he tried to ignore it.

"Al....." said Ernst as a hand covered his mouth.

Everything around them went silent. There was a low rumbling noise in the distance. In the sky what seemed to be birds, turned into giant flying objects. Albert's frown turned into a small smile and grew as he saw the black and white cross on the wings of the bombers. The Russian soldiers dropped their rifles and headed to the AA guns outside of the camp that were connected to trucks. The rest of the German soldiers ran free and ran for their lives into the forest and down the street. The air raid sirens rang out and the Russian soldier let go of Ernst's arms, freeing him to Albert.

"Run!" some of the soldiers yelled.

"The Luftwaffe! We're safe!" one other yelled.

All of the German prisoners were already out of the camp, some were skin and bone wearing  ripped clothes. They were hopefully free now.

The German bombers flew over head. The whistling sound from the bombs gave me chills as I watched them hit the ground. Some Russians did not have anytime to escape, most of them were killed instantly. As the last German soldiers reached the forest, Albert and Ernst searched for Wilhelm, Willi, and Alfred. They were not anywhere to be seen.

"Albert, Ernst!" yelled a man coming from the opposite side of the crowd.

Albert recognized the low yelling voice, it was Wilhelm!

"Wilhelm!" they both yelled.

All of the men pushed their way through the crowd of German soldiers. They met each other and hugged.

"God, I thought we weren't going to escape that! And now the camp is getting bombed by our Heinkel 111s! Ernst, I saw you get dragged up to the ropes yelling for Albert. I prayed that you would live and it was just at the luckest moment when those bombers came!" said Wilhelm.

The bombs continued to drop. All of the soldiers watched as the camp turned into one big fiery explosion. Gas tanks around the camp exploded. Objects flew everywhere, along with bodies. The German soldiers laughed when it was finished. They waved their hands at the bombers as they flew away.
