Chapter 34: Raising the White Flag

The Life Of A German SoldierWords: 1987

"All, hold your fire. We are out numbered. The white flag will be raised." said Willi to the rest of the tanks.

Russell slowly picked up the white flag that was next to a green and red one. His hands shook as he climbed up the ladder and opened the hatch. He wigged it around in the breeze and climbed out of the tank.

"Come on, crew. They are getting out too. We are done."

Albert, Willi, and the rest of the crew hopped off the tank and walked towards the Russian tank crews that came out. Ernst ran over to Albert and hugged him, with fear.

"Is this it?" asked Ernst.

"Hopefully not, but you never know."

All of the men raised their arms and put them behind their heads. The Russian soldiers ordered them to get into a line for a check. They stood there confused on what they were saying until they pushed and kicked the German soldiers together. They searched through their pockets, one by one. Photographs of family members and other personal items flew out of the German soldier's pockets and landed on the grass, blowing away in the breeze. German pistols were kept by the Russian soldiers. Everything was taken away.

"Walk them to the street, soldier." said one of the Russian soldiers. "Rest of you, get back in your tanks and lead them to our nearest prison camp."

The Russian soldiers pushed the German soldiers along the country road to the south, away from their destination, Ukraine. Russian soldiers jabbed the butt of their rifles into German soldier's backs as they wondered off the road. Some were shot.

"Albert?" whispered Ernst. "Where are we going?"

"You should know, another Russian P.O.W camp. It could be the one we escaped from about a week ago."

"Oh what about......."

The Russian soldier jabbed the rifle into Ernst's back and he fell face forward to the gravel road. The soldier picked him up by the collar and shoved him ahead of Albert. Albert looked back to find Willi and Wilhelm. Both of them were in the back of the crowd, in front of the Russian T-34s.
