Dananjaya opened the door with a fierce urgency, his breath shallow, his sword still gripped tightly in his hand.

The scene inside was one of tense silence. Pramila sat on the divan, her face pale, her eyes wide with fear. Her maids were gathered around her, looking as terrified as she was, all waiting for the next step from the rebels who threatened to breach the chamber.

The flickering torchlight only amplified the sense of dread in the air.

But as the door creaked open, the tension was broken by the sight of Dananjaya. His armor, glinting in the light, was bloodied from the battle, yet his presence was commanding and unwavering.

His gaze, rigid and fierce, softened only when it landed on her.

Pramila's heart skipped a beat, relief and fear mingling in her chest. She slowly rose from the divan, her body trembling slightly.

She stepped toward him, her movements slow as if afraid that if she moved too quickly, the nightmare would return.

As she neared him, the distance between them closing with each step, she leaned, her face towards his chest that she could feel the rapid rhythm of his heartbeat. She was trembling, her body instinctively seeking his warmth, his strength.

Dananjaya, his own body still tense from the fight, gently enfolded her in his arms. His voice was soft but firm, a promise in the midst of chaos. "Now I am here, Pramila. Don't worry. I'm here."

Then suddenly she looked up, and the proximity of her face to his made his breath hitch.

Her skin was warm against his, and for a brief second, their faces were so close, the air between them thick with unspoken words.

He could feel her breath as she exhaled softly, and the world outside seemed to fade away.

Pramila smiled faintly, her lips still trembling from the weight of fear and relief.

As she leaned closer, something caught her eye—a small flower caught in his hair. Without breaking eye contact, she reached up and gently plucked it from his dark locks.

Her fingers brushed against his scalp, sending a soft shiver down his spine, but his gaze remained fixed on hers, pramilas smile became softer as she carefully held the flower.

Her playful side stirred. She gently tickled his chin with the flower, the action light and teasing, yet somehow tender.

Dananjaya's lips curled into a smile, warmth filling his chest at her touch, and for a moment, everything else seemed to fade away.

But before he could respond, Pramila, still smiling, pulled away, the brief lightness of the moment lingering between them as she turned.

Ereya rode into the gates of Vatapi with a storm of emotions swirling within him.

The journey from the battlefield had been grueling, and although he had defeated the Kalachurri rebels who had dared to attack him on the road, his heart was heavy with worry for Pramila.

The message had come so suddenly—Antahpura attacked—and yet, as he approached the palace gates, it was eerily quiet, the kind of quiet that came after a storm had passed.

The soldiers lined the courtyard, their faces a mixture of exhaustion and relief, but there was an unmistakable air of victory.

The battle had been won, the Kalachurri forces pushed back. But there was one question that burned in Ereya's mind above all others.

Where was Pramila?

As he dismounted from his horse, his steps hitting the palace ground, his eyes scanned the surroundings.

His thoughts were consumed by her—his wife, whom he had not seen in what felt like an eternity.

The palace felt like a shadow of its former self, the air heavy with the weight of the attack and the chaos that had come with it.

The ministers, some with bloodied tunics, others with wearied expressions, were there to greet him.

Their faces reflected the exhaustion of the battle, but they lit up when they saw him, their prince, returned victorious.

They bowed in respect, but Ereya didn't have the patience for pleasantries. His eyes moved past them, searching for his friend, Dananjaya, who had been the one to hold the fort in his absence.

Dananjaya stepped forward, his armor scratched and dirty, his face lined with exhaustion. He bowed his head in greeting.

"My lord, it is a relief to see you return. The battle was won, but at great cost."

Ereya's gaze was sharp, his focus unwavering. He didn't care about the battle or the victories—he needed to know one thing.

"Where is Pramila?" His voice was a quiet storm, controlled, but carrying an undeniable urgency.

Dananjaya's face softened as he spoke, his voice low.

"She is safe, my lord. The palace is secure. I made sure of it. She's fine." He paused, noting the tension in Ereya's eyes.

"Your queen has been through a great deal, but she is unharmed."

Ereya let out a breath he hadn't realized he was holding. His heart pounded in his chest, the weight of relief momentarily overpowering the worry.

"You saved her?" Ereya's voice cracked slightly, and he nodded in gratitude.

Dananjaya gave a small, humble smile. "It was my duty, Ereya. I owe my life to you. She will be happy to see you returned."

Ereya didn't respond immediately. The thought of seeing Pramila again brought a strange mix of emotions—relief, but also guilt, because of the distance that had grown between them over time.

Still, he couldn't deny the pull in his chest. Despite their strange marriage, she was his wife, and seeing her now felt like the most important thing in the world.

"I want to see her now," Ereya said, his voice steady and commanding, though there was a softness in his eyes that betrayed the anxiety he felt. "Take me to her chambers."

Dananjaya nodded and gestured for Ereya to follow him, leading him through the grand hallways of the palace.

Pramila sat in her chambers, her mind wandering to the moments she had shared with Dananjaya. She smiled softly, remembering his touch, his words, the way he had always been there for her in ways that her husband, Ereya, never had. The war had kept Ereya away, and she had learned to navigate her loneliness in his absence.

Her thoughts were interrupted by a soft knock at the door. She turned, expecting another servant or maid, but instead, the door creaked open and in walked Dananjaya. A teasing smile formed on her lips, and she raised an eyebrow.

"Well, look who's here," she said lightly, her voice teasing, but there was warmth behind her words. "Come to check on me again, Commander?"

Dananjaya gave a small, rueful smile but didn't speak. Instead, he moved aside, and Pramila's smile faltered slightly as Ereya stepped into the room behind him. Her heart skipped a beat.

The sight of her husband—tall, commanding, and still bearing the aura of a warrior—brought a rush of emotions she hadn't expected.

"My lord," she said softly, her smile returning but with a hint of uncertainty. "You've returned."

Ereya's gaze met hers, a flicker of something unreadable in his eyes. He gave a nod, stepping further into the room.

"Yes I'm here, Pramila," he said, his voice steady but carrying the weight of unspoken words.

Pramila quickly straightened up, her gaze softening as she walked towards him. "Come, sit," she said gently, motioning to a nearby divan. "I've missed you."

Ereya sat down, and Pramila moved behind him, her fingers lightly brushing his shoulder as she began to help him remove his armor.

The weight of it seemed symbolic to her—the armor that separated him from her, that had kept him distant for so long since their wedding night.

"Thank you," Ereya said quietly, his voice low as she gently eased the heavy armor from his shoulders. "For... everything."

She smiled, her fingers working deftly. "You're welcome, my lord. It's the least I can do after the battles you've fought." Her tone was soft, and there was a tenderness in her movements that was rare between them.

She didn't speak of the distance, the absence, or the loneliness. She simply focused on the man before her, the husband who had returned, even if he had left her behind so many times before.

Dananjaya, standing nearby, watched the exchange quietly. His jaw tightened ever so slightly, his gaze flicking between the couple as Ereya spoke in low tones with Pramila.

He had always known this moment would come—the moment when he would have to step back. His feelings for her had never been a secret, but now, seeing her so effortlessly tend to Ereya, a sharp pang of jealousy rose within him. He was not foolish. He knew where her heart lay, and now it wasn't with him.

After a moment, Dananjaya cleared his throat, his voice firm yet polite as he addressed the couple. "I apologize for intruding," he said, his eyes meeting Pramila's for just a moment. "I'll take my leave now."

Pramila glanced at him, her expression softening with understanding. "Thank you, Dananjaya," she said quietly, giving him a warm, albeit slightly wistful smile. "You've done so much. You should rest."

Dananjaya nodded once, then turned to leave, but not without casting one last glance at Pramila. His heart felt heavy as he walked out, leaving her and Ereya alone together.

Though he had never spoken of it, he had hoped for something more, for a chance to be seen in the way he saw her—but now, as he stepped out into the hallway, he knew that hope would remain a distant, unspoken wish.

As the door closed softly behind him, Pramila turned back to Ereya, who was looking at her with a quiet intensity. The room was thick with unspoken words.
