The Royal Conspiracy1,834 words~10 min read

The sun spilled golden light over the palace courtyard as Queen Pramila approached the waiting horse cart, her steps measured, her bearing regal. Behind her, the maids bustled, their arms filled with her belongings, their excited chatter bubbling softly like a brook.

Dananjaya stood nearby, his sharp eyes observing the group. His men were deep in discussion about their patrol routes, but the moment Pramila appeared, Dananjaya's focus shifted entirely to her.

Dananjaya's attention sharpened as the Queen neared. His steady stride carried him to her side, his expression composed but carrying an undercurrent of unspoken emotion.

"Devi," he began, his tone low but respectful, "may I ask where you are heading this fine morning?"

Pramila adjusted her veil with measured elegance, her eyes meeting his with quiet confidence. "To the waterfall. The recent rains have made it a perfect haven for peace... and perhaps a bath."

Dananjaya's brow furrowed with gentle concern. "The waterfall is indeed beautiful, but the woods surrounding it can be unpredictable. Allow me and my men to accompany you. Your safety must not be left to chance."

Pramila hesitated, her lips curving into a faint smile that seemed both amused and resigned. "Very well, Commander. If you must. Though I doubt there's much danger in such a tranquil place."

"Danger often hides behind tranquility, Your Majesty," Dananjaya replied softly, stepping aside to let her board the cart. "My presence will ensure it remains only tranquil."

Pramila stepped gracefully into the cart, and the maids followed behind her, Dananjaya mounted his horse, riding alongside the Queen while his men formed a protective formation.

As the group moved through the palace gates, the maids who were behind the cart stole glances at Dananjaya, their whispers growing bolder with each step.

"Did you see the way he looked at our Devi just now?" one maid murmured, her voice low and breathless. "Like the sun itself rises and sets for her."

Another maid stifled a giggle. "It's always like that. Every time he speaks to her, there's a light in his eyes. And did you notice how quickly he volunteered to come along? Devotion, indeed."

The third maid smirked, her voice tinged with mischief. "Devotion? Perhaps it's something more. Imagine—a warrior so brave, yet a poet at heart. What could be more romantic?"

They leaned closer to each other, their laughter muffled by hands cupped over their mouths.

Their words never reached Pramila, who sat serenely, gazing at the path ahead.

But Dananjaya, sharp-eared and ever alert, caught every whispered word. His lips twitched intp a faint smirk, though his gaze remained fixed on the road.

But suddenly the journey was interrupted abruptly as a figure darted into their path. A woman, her hair wild and her clothes tattered, appeared from the shadows of the trees.

Her frantic movements and wide eyes struck a jarring contrast to the serene surroundings. She waved her arms desperately, pointing toward the direction of the waterfall and making frantic gestures toward the Dananjaya and his men.

One of Dananjaya's men immediately pulled his horse to a halt. "Commander, what is this? She is blocking the Queen's path?"

Another guard sneered, his hand inching toward his sword. "She looks mad. A beggar, perhaps? Or worse—a spy."

The woman's eyes flicked wildly between the guards and Pramila. She raised her hands, pointing to the waterfall and then to herself, her movements full of urgency and desperation. Her mouth opened and closed, but no sound came, and her silence was as eerie as her presence.

Pramila leaned slightly out of the cart, her brows furrowing with concern. "Sir Dananjaya whos that? What is she trying to say?" she asked, her voice quiet but tense. "She looks frightened."

Dananjaya raised a hand, his voice curt and commanding. "She's just a disturbed villager, Devi. There's no need for concern."

Turning to his men, he gestured sharply. "Remove her from the path. We'll continue our journey."

The guards obeyed, carefully but firmly moving the woman aside. She struggled, her eyes filled with anguish as she gestured desperately toward the waterfall. But Dananjaya gave her no further thought, his focus was on something else.

When they arrived at the waterfall, the scene was as idyllic as Pramila had imagined. The cascading water sparkled like liquid diamonds, and the air was perfumed with the sweet scent of wild blossoms. Her maids clapped their hands in delight, their earlier whispers forgotten.

"Devi," one maid exclaimed, "the waterfall is even more magnificent than we dreamed!"

Pramila smiled faintly, allowing their enthusiasm to wash over her. She slowly stepped toward the water, feeling the coolness against her skin.

Nearby, Dananjaya dismounted, his ever-watchful gaze sweeping the area. One of his men approached. "Commander, the area appears safe, but should we patrol the perimeter?"

Dananjaya nodded. "Do so quietly. Allow the Queen her peace, but remain vigilant."

As the sound of the waterfall filled the air, the maids began to hum a soft tune, their voices weaving into the melody of nature around them.

Encouraged by their shared joy and the peaceful surroundings, one of the maids turned to  Pramila and grinned.

"Devi," she teased gently, "you sang for us once before. Will you not honor us again?"

Pramila shook her head, feigning reluctance. "You all are relentless. Must I always be the one to entertain?"

The maids giggled in unison, urging her on. "Please, Devi! No voice carries the sweetness of yours. Sing for us, and we'll join in—like the chorus of the rivers themselves."

Sighing in mock exasperation, Pramila relented, a soft smile gracing her lips. "Very well, if you insist. But only if you promise not to tease me about my voice later."

The maids, eager, nodded earnestly. "We promise, Devi!"

"Sweet spring across all directions,

Sweet spring across all directions.

Where bees and butterflies play,

Where peacocks and peahens sway.

Sweet spring...

Where maidens and youths dance together,

Where princes and princesses meet forever.

Sweet spring...

Sweet, sweet, oh sweet,

Sweet spring."

Pramila's voice rose in a soft, melodic tune as the spring, her maids quickly joining in. Gracefully, she began to dance, her steps light and fluid.

Her clothes shimmered as she spun, arms moving with the rhythm of the song. The maids followed her, laughing and twirling, creating a circle of joy around her.

Then one of the young maids, came front, her voice sweet and clear, blending seamlessly with a sweet melody.

"On rippling waves and swaying bodies,

Soft whispers exchange sweet stories.

Words flutter gently to the heart,

Eyes hold secrets, never to part.

This heaven on earth is ours to share,

A magical realm beyond compare."

Pramila smiled at her and start to sing again.

Oh my love, where are you?

Oh my love, where are you?

The springtime has arrived,

To stir hearts in love's sacred shrine.

Come to the altar, my divine.

Pramilas  voice, was soft yet resonant, blended with the rustling leaves and the cascading water, creating a harmony so pure that even the birds seemed to fall silent to listen.

The maids, as promised, joined in during the chorus, their voices lifting the song to the heavens.

Dananjaya, seated on a nearby rock, found his quill drawn to the parchment in his hand. His quill paused mid-air as he watched Pramila, her figure illuminated by the sunlight that danced off the water. She seemed almost ethereal, as if spring itself had taken human form.

His pen moved across the parchment as he captured the scene in words.

"She moves like the wind, untamed and wild,

An apsara's beauty, both fierce and mild.

The water bends, the earth sighs,

Her dance, a gift to all our eyes."

The maids burst into laughter at his words, turning to look at him with amused expressions.

"Commander Dananjaya!" one of the maids exclaimed, clapping her hands. "Your words could charm even the river to dance!"

Pramila paused, her hands on her hips, her expression mock-annoyed as she turned toward him. "Again with your poetry! Is there no end to your theatrics?"

Dananjaya smiled calmly, his eyes never leaving the parchment. "I merely speak the truth, Devi. Would you rather I lied and said the waterfall was more graceful than you?"

Pramila shook her head, laughing as she resumed her dance. " Enough flattering Sir Dananjaya. but anyway i want to hear another one"

"Then listen Devi.." Dananjaya spelled with a light smile

"A warrior bold, with heart untamed,

His bravery, a legacy framed.

Eyes like fire, sharp and fierce,

A prince who walks, with no fear to pierce.

His hands, both strong and full of grace,

Carve paths through time, leaving no trace.

Oh, Ereya, prince of power and might,

In his shadow, even the stars seem bright."

Dananjaya's voice, though respectful, carried the weight of his admiration not just for Ereya's bravery but for his noble presence.

He looked out at Pramila, his gaze softening with a mixture of reverence and longing.

Pramila, hearing the familiar rhythm of the poem, stopped her dance and turned to face him, a playful smile curving her lips. She teased him, the playful spark in her eyes revealing the lightness of the moment.

"Another poem, Dananjaya? You seem quite enamored with my husband. Is his bravery the only thing that draws you to him, or is there more?"

Dananjaya, sensing the teasing tone, chuckled softly, his gaze never leaving her.

"I  speak the truth, Your Majesty. Ereya's bravery is as boundless as the sky, and his handsomeness, like a god descended among men. What woman wouldn't find him worthy of such admiration?"

Pramila laughed lightly, her voice carrying the warmth of the sun. "And yet, here you are, composing verses about my husband, all while I'm dancing for you. You're ridiculous, Sir."

"Wait.. Are you dancing for me, Devi?"

With a shy, almost imperceptible smile, she lowered her gaze, then turned her back to him. "No," she replied softly, her voice a mix of warmth and gentle humor. "I mean..I'm dancing for the river. For the water, the wind, and  the sun."

Her maids giggled behind her, sensing the playful tension between the two, but they remained silent, watching their Queen with admiration.

Pramila stepped toward the middle of the river, the cool water rising to meet her feet, the ripples reflecting the light of the sun. She danced in the water now, her movements even more fluid, as if she were one with the elements themselves—graceful, untamed, and free.

Dananjaya stood up, his heart racing, his eyes following her every move as she waded deeper into the river.

His heart, however, was caught between duty and desire—between his loyalty to Ereya and the stirring feelings he had for the Queen.

Pramila's laughter floated back to him, light and free, as her maids began to sing again, their voices rising in harmony. Yet, the teasing smile she'd cast his way before, still lingered in his mind.

But then suddenly, something happened ......
