Ereya walk toward the camp, his tall, commanding figure caught the golden light of the setting sun. His armor gleamed like liquid gold, polished to perfection, reflecting the warm hues of the sky.
His damp, dark hair clung slightly to his forehead, framing a chiseled face that seemed carved from stone yet softened by the faint glisten of river water still lingering on his skin.
His sharp jawline tensed as he murmured to himself, his lips moved as if wrestling with unspoken truths.
"Her face," he murmured, shaking his head, the memory stubbornly refusing to fade. "Like the river itselfâuntamed, alive. How is it that someone I barely know... someone I should forget... consumes me like this? What kind of magic is this, Mahadev?"
He let out a bitter chuckle, his hand clenching into a fist.
"She moves like the world bends to her rhythm. And her eyes... as if they see straight through me. Now her storm rages within me, relentless."
His steps faltered, and for a moment, his shoulders drooped under the weight of another memory. Another face, one he couldn't ignore, even if he wanted to.
"Pramila," he whispered, her name was the prayer he didn't deserved to utter.
"My wife. My queen. Charming beauty who sacrifices everything to me, and yet... not enough. I never have been enough to you devi"
"You've given me everything, Pramila. Everything. You loved me with a grace I never earned. And what have I given you in return my queen?"
His breath caught, and his voice cracked with raw emotion. "Half-hearted promises? Words I couldn't keep? You've stayed, even when I've done nothing to deserve it. And now..."
"And now, I... I chase a shadow of something fleeting. What kind of man does that? What kind of husband betrays a queen like you?"
You don't deserve this my queen. You don't deserve a man who can't even look at you with feelings. Your eyes, Pramilaâthey see me with hope, with love, and all I do is break that. Over and over again."
His gaze dropped, and his voice grew quieter, filled with resignation.
"She's a stormâwild, fierce, everything I thought I'd lost in myself. But you Pramila... you're the calm I swore to protect. The beauty I was too blind to cherish."
He let out a slow, shuddering breath, his emotions raw.
"Here I am, standing between both. Wanting both. Deserving neither."
The camp came into view, its fires casting shadows that flickered like the doubts in his heart. Ereya straightened, forcing the weight of his turmoil behind a mask of command.
Before he could reach the central tent, Dananjaya appeared, his face tense.
"My lord," Dananjaya began, his voice taut with urgency, "a spy has been captured. A Kalachuri agent. He speaks madnessâbut I am sure there's something... unsettling in his words."
Ereya's eyes sharpened. "What A Kalachuri spy? Here?" His voice cut through the evening air, laced with authority. "Where is he now?"
"Inside, my lord," Dananjaya replied, glancing toward the largest tent. "The ministers are with him. But... be warned. He seems mad. His words i mean...they twist like riddles."
Ereya's jaw tightened. "Madness or not, every word from an enemy's mouth matters. Take me to him."
Dananjaya hesitated. "It's not just what he says, my lord. It's the way he says it. As if he knows things. As if he's looking into our very souls."
Ereya's gaze darkened, his hand instinctively brushed the hilt of his sword. "Then we'll see whose soul is stronger."
They enter the command tent, the air thick with tension.
The captured spy, a wiry man with wild eyes and torn clothing, is restrained by two guards. His face was pale, his lips cracked, but his eyes burn with a fanatic intensity.
The commanders look uneasy, whispering among themselves as the Crown prince steps forward.
So... the great prince Ereya graces me with his presence. Tell me, my lord, how does it feel to know that your end is near? The spy spelled with a horase laught.
"Silence! You dare threaten our prince in his own camp?" Cheif general Vijay said while glaring, his hand on the hilt of his sword.
"Enough Uncle. What do we know of him?" Ereya spelled.
"He was caught near the council tent, my lord. We think he carries documentsâmaps of our formations, details of supply routes. But this rascal refuses to speak" Commander Ravikreeti repiled.
"Kill me if you need little prince" The spy mumbled with a mad smile.
"Speak plainly, wretch. You underestimate me. Death is not the only punishment I can offer. Who sent you? Speak, and I may show mercy."Â Ereya asked coldly.
"Then Plain words for a plain prince. But the answers you seek, great lord, are not so simple. The river flows, the crown falls, and the shadows rise. Do you hear it, Prince of Chalukya? The sound of destruction whispers on the wind." The spy spelled.
"Enough riddles! If you value your life, speak the truth. What plan does your king have for my kingdom?" Ereya said.
"Your kingdom? Your kingdom is already in flames, my lord. You just don't see the fire yet. While you chase shadows here, your home crumbles. The Kalachurii king doesn't need to strike with an army when his words do the work for him." spy said leaning forward.
"You speak nonsense! If there is a plan, say it outright. What your forces are poised against us? Where are they?" Dananiaya shouted at the spy angrily.
"The crown prince dances in the fields of war, unaware that the wolves circle his den. The queen sits safe, or so it seems, but safety is a fleeting thing. Tick, tock, my lords. The hourglass runs empty." The spy laughed again.
"Enough of your games. What is this danger you speak of? What wolves? Answer, or I will have you tortured until your tongue loosens." Ereya said his voice was deadly calmed.
"Torture me, and my lips will bleed nothing but silence. Kill me, and my words will haunt you forever. But know this, great Prince, the Kalachurii king plays a game of patience. While you fight here, the heart of your kingdom beats slower, weaker. A blow will come when you least expect it." Spy spelled with a strange poetic tone.
Before Ereya could respond, the spy jerked violently against his bindings. A flash of silver gleamedâtoo fast. The guards lunged, but the spy's blade was already at his throat.
"No!" Ereya's shout came too late. The blade plunged deep, and the spy crumpled, his body convulsing before falling limp. Blood pooled beneath him, dark and final.
The tent erupted into chaos.
"Search the camp!" Commander Sanjaya bellowed, his voice strained. "Someone helped him. Find them!"
"Enough," Ereya said sharply, his tone slicing through the panic. "This man is dead, but his words live. And they demand action."
The tent fell silent. Ereya's gaze swept over his commanders, his mind racing. Finally, he turned and walked out without another word.
Ministers and commanders exchanged puzzled glances, their confusion heavy in the air.
Dananjaya stood up and followed his friend quickly.
My lord, where are you going? The council is waiting. His words were madness, yet you seem troubled.? Dannajaya spelled softly, hesitant to interrupt.
"Trouble is not the right word, Dananjaya. I am uncertain. The Kalachurii king has played a clever handâclouding truth with riddles, planting doubts in the mind of his enemy. But one thing is clear: our kingdom is at risk." Ereya said without turning, his voice was low.
If you suspect a threat to the capital, my lord, we must act swiftly. Aren't we ? Dananjaya said stepping closer.
"That is exactly why you must act, Dananjaya. Take a troop of my finest men and ride for the Vatapi without delay. We cannot afford to ignore even the faintest whisper of danger." Ereya said finally turning to face Danajaya.
"But my lord, are you certain? If the capital is the target, then surely our mighty emperor ,your cousin, brother, the empire's steward, willâ" Dananjay asked with a suprised look.
"Well, Emperor my uncle is old, not well enough and Vishnu is away , Dananjaya! Away on matters of the empire, leaving the heart of our kingdom vulnerable. The capital, the court, and Pramilaâthey are unguarded. If the Kalachurii king Buddharaja plans to strike, he will strike where I am weakest."
Ereya pauses, his voice was lowered, heavy with restrained anger and guilt
"And I have made them weak, Dananjaya. I am the one who has left them exposed."
"My lord, I will ride with the troops at once. We will fortify the capital and ensure the empire's safety. Vatapi will be protected, I swear it." Danajaya said bowing slightly.
"I trust you with this, Dananjaya my friend. You must not fail. Protect the emperor and the kingdom. Whatever their plan, it must not succeed. I will take care of the stuff here" Ereya nodded with a soft look.
"I will not fail, my lord"
"Ride quickly. Time is not our ally. Take the fastest route and spare no delay my friend"Ereya spelled placing a hand on Dananjay's shoulder, but his gaze was fierce and commanding.
Dananjaya bowed and left, determination in his every step. Ereya stood alone, staring into the darkness beyond the campfires.
"The queen sits safe, so seem so" he muttered under his breath, the spy's words a ghostly echo in his mind. He exhaled sharply, his fists clenched.
"Pramila... I May cannot give you my heart my queen, But I will give you my protection. I will not let them take what is mine."
