Ch. 3

You know you were perfectly fine with us ten minutes ago now your acting like we all grew two extra heads or something," Ryan said poking me in my side. We were outside the cafeteria in a throng of wolves entering the building, I could smell the pasta from here and my mouth was watering. "What do you mean?" I asked Ryan. I swatted away his hand as he tried to poke me again. " This!" He said gesturing towards me. I was nestled next to Ember as we moved closer to the building.

"Oh leave her alone Ryan and as far as anyone here is concerned you do have two extra heads," Ember snapped at him. "Why did she have to remember you? Why not me than she would be hanging all over me and scared of you, hot head," Ryan whined. "Maybe after she finished throttling you," Carson said. "She wouldn't were older now more mature I'm sure it would have been water under the bridge," Ryan said. "Oh well in that case lets tell her about it," Ember said. Ryan paled and looked at her pleadingly. "You wouldn't! Would you? She'd most likely kill me," Ryan said. "I would actually like to know what you guys keep talking about," I said. "

Ember smiled at Ryan before turning completely to face me. "Well a week before the accident Ryan thought it would be fun to play a prank on you and...one of our pack mates. He started sending anonymous letters to them and then posted the letters and replies in the woods were all the pups hung out, well the letters didn't have any names on them but everyone saw and it was embarrassing to say the least for our pack mate. Well by now they were pissed and out for blood and Ryan kinda made it look like you were behind the whole thing," she told me. "He what?" I asked. "It was an accident Kye, I didn't mean to. They confronted me thinking I knew who did it and I tried to brush them off but for some reason they kinda got the impression it was you," he told me.

I was annoyed but not very much probably because I couldn't remember the incident but whoever that other wolf was could which was why I was so annoyed. "Come on, let's go eat you guys can fight later," Skye said and ushered us through the cafeteria. The smell of food was stronger in here and I suddenly forgot to be annoyed with Ryan as I made my way towards the buffet. I grabbed a plate and began piling food on. "I feed you not that long ago how hungry are you?" Skye asked. Looking at my over piled plate, I had grabbed a ton of pasta and garlic bread and a couple of chicken breasts. "I'm starved," I said. Werewolves normally ate a lot but seeing as my wolf had yet to awaken it was strange for me to be so hungry right after I had already ate.

Skye lead the way to one of the far tables that was occupied with other teens and sat down. I wanted nothing more than to dig into my food but I couldn't yet. First Skye went around the table and introduced me to the others I caught a few of the names but not many. After she finished I still couldn't eat, well no one could eat, because Raiza wasn't here yet and until the Alpha got food no one could eat, pack etiquette. Everyone around me was waiting patiently and talking about normal things like homework or plans for the rest of the night.

It wasn't long before the doors opened again and Raiza glided through them behind her were a couple of her Beta wolves like always. She walked to the front of the cafeteria where everyone could easily see her and she could see all of us. "Before we eat I have a couple of things I would like to talk to you all about and normally I would wait until Friday when we usually meet in the lodge but this can't wait," Raiza addressed the room. When she had entered the room had gone quiet but with her announcement a quiet hum of voices picked up. I listened and caught a few bits of conversation. "Do you think were under attack?" One wolf asked. "I bet this is about that human boy one of the pups brought to the woods," said another.

"Quiet," Raiza commanded and silence fell. Raiza left her spot at the front and started waking through the room. "As I am sure most of you remember eight years ago there was a tragic accident that took one of our wolves from us forever, Selena Hudson one of our best healers. The accident also caused Carver to take his daughter and join the military," Raiza stopped in front of me and pulled me to my feet. "I would like to welcome back one of our wolves who has been gone for a very long time, Kylie Hudson," Raiza said. Once more a hum went through the room which died easily with a glare from Raiza. She pulled me in front of her, her hands on my shoulders. "The accident took more than just Selena from us," Raiza told the crowd and I tensed. Everyone was staring at her now with rapt attention and I so hated being up here but this had to be down. I just wish she did it in a less embarrassing way. I scanned the room and I noticed that one girl wasn't staring at Raiza but at me and she looked pissed. Her eyes looked like liquid silver and they seemed to burn me as she stared.

"Kylie was injured badly in the accident, she sustained a blow to the head that almost killed her," Raiza continued. Wait it almost killed me? I knew it was bad but I never knew I had almost died. "Both I and her father had hoped the side effects of the injury would go away with time but they haven't. Kylie has amnesia and nearly everything before the accident is a blur for her," Raiza said. A shocked gasp ran through the crowd and now the wolves focused on me instead. I fidgeted a bit under their gaze but held still, Raiza's grip tightened on my shoulders giving me support. "How, is that possible she's a wolves we can heal from almost anything!" Called out a wolf from the crowd. "She can't remember me?" Asked a girl who was seated at my table, tears in her eyes.

"Calm yourselves, many of you I am sure are saddened by this but be happy that Kylie is here and she is well. She may not remember but she is still herself and our family. Being amongst pack again may even bring back some of her memories. The reason I am telling you this is so that you are all aware that things with Kylie aren't how you left them and To warn you that when she does remember something she becomes caught up in the memory and vulnerable. So if that does happen look out for her and make sure she is safe and send for me immediately," Raiza said. The entire room seemed to nod at once as they heard what she said. I could tell from the look on the faces of those around me that they all felt the same: they wouldn't let harm come to one of their own.

Raiza told everyone to dig in and soon no one was paying attention to us anymore. "Have a good night, Kylie and remember school tomorrow," Raiza told me before she left. She took her spot at the table in the front of the room and I gladly sat down again. "Well that was dramatic," Ryan stated. I kicked him under the table. "Owwww, why must you be so violent?" He said. I smiled at him sweetly before I started to shove my dinner in my mouth god I was starving. "Mmmmhmmm," I moaned around my full mouth. Ember and Skye laughed. "It's not that good," Skye said. "I disagree," I told her before going back to my food.

"Riiiiiiiiiiiiiinnnnnngggggg!" I grabbed my pillow and hid under it but the ringing cut through the fluffiness. I blindly swatted at the right side of my bed expecting to hit my night stand but my arm sailed through the empty air jostling me bed. "Gah!" I mumbled into my pillow. Where was that damn clock. I moved my pillow off my head and looked around my dark room, my clock's glowing face was on the right side of my bed. 'Oh right I'm not in Denver anymore' I quickly slammed my hand down on my alarm clock and beautiful silence fell. I peered at the clock through sleep blurred eyes, 5:30 said the large red numbers. "Why the hell is it set so early," I mumbled falling back down on the bed. I let my eyes close I was about to fall into the blissful nothingness of sleep when the damn clock sounded again. "Riiiiiiiiiinnnnggg!" I tossed the pillow aside and glanced at the clock again 5:35. I slammed the snooze button again. 'Why is this damn thing set so early!' I got up and stumbled toward the light switch. I flicked it on and looked over my room, I noticed a note laying next to my alarm clock and moved to read it.

Wake up you idiot or your going to miss the bus! School starts at 7:00 and you need to be at the bus stop by 6:30!

"Damn it," I said. I had forgotten all about school. I regrettably abandoned my bed for the morning and started getting ready for school. I had just stepped out of my bathroom in my new school uniform when I heard banging on my door. "Kylie!" Ember called before she opened the door and walked in, she stopped in surprise when she saw me. "Your up," she said. "No I'm really not," I said grumpily. She laughed at me. "Don't forget your back pack or your schedule," she said as she sat on my bed and watched me finish drying my hair. "I forgot to unpack my bag," I told her. She spotted the bag and grabbed it. "I got it,"she said and started emptying it on my bed. "No!" I called too late as she up ended the bag on my bed. I winced as my laptop feel out and crashed down, my mouse and headphones landed on top of it with a bang. "Opps, sorry!" Ember said. I headed over to the bed and picked up the computer. "It's looks like it survived," I told her. Opening up the screen. An envelope with all of my pictures floated out and landed on the bed spilling the contents. They were of me and all my friends I made at the different schools I went to. Ember picked some up and looked through them. "You look happy," she told me. "I was," I replied.

I finished emptying my bag in silence as Ember went through all the pictures.I tossed in my new school supplies Raiza had gotten for me before I broke the silence. "We should probably get going," I told her. Ember looked up from one of the pictures she had been staring at for a while and nodded. We left the room and Ember guided me through the maze of hallways and into the cafeteria.

"There you guys are, I was starting to worry," Carson called from a table. He was sitting next to the guy he was playing pool with yesterday, Sean? We grabbed some food before heading over, I just grabbed an apple I was never very hungry in the morning. "What were you guys doing? I know girls take forever to get ready but seriously any longer and you wouldn't have time to eat before we left for the bus. "Sorry I forgot to empty my bag last night," I told him. "Hey," Sean said holding out his hand. "I'm Sean, sorry I didn't really introduce myself yesterday but I expected sparks to fly between you and Ember and that is one chick fight I don't want to be caught in the middle of," he said giving me a playful wink. "Ignore him, he's a asshole," Ember muttered around her blueberry muffin. "And your a demon lady when your pissed," Sean said. "Wrong, I'm a bitch Sean there's a difference," Ember replied. "Let's continue this on the bus," Carson said getting up.

There was a large group of teens and kids who in the cafeteria, as well as a few adults sprinkled around but when Carson stood and made for the door so did the rest of the kids. We all walked down the dirt road as on big group, it didn't take long until we made it to the main road. Carson kept walking right down the road though without stopping. "I thought we took a bus?" I asked Ember. "We do but the stop is a further down so that if anyone tries following us to the compound they don't find the road and usually end up lost or picked up by border patrol," she told me. "Border patrol?" I asked. "Yeah, we can just let people walk in or out of the compound and certainly not teens who try to sneak off into town for a party," she said. "Let me guess you've tried?" I asked. "Of course."

"Miss. Hudson, how was your trip to town? Your Alpha told me that you were in Colorado, was it?" The principal Mr. Jones asked. "Yeah I was in Denver," I told him. We were in his office and I was sitting behind his desk trying not to wince as the sun shone behind him. His office was nice compared to some of the schools I went to but not the nicest. When dad was stationed in Chicago he planned on being their for awhile and enrolled me in a private school because I was starting high school and he wanted me to have a good education. Well it worked out that way I was there for a full year and when I transferred to my new school I was ahead in all my classes. Newbaury High was a lot like a private school with the uniforms and some of its classes but it didn't have that elegance to it that my school in Chicago did.

"I see you've transferred schools a lot and your Alpha mentioned you wouldn't be here long, are you moving again?" Mr. Jones asked. "No, I will be here for awhile but my 16th birthday is coming up," I explained. "Ah, yes well I hope you enjoy your experience here. Now let's get you off to class," he said. He stood up from his brown leather chair and opened the door to the reception area. I stood and grabbed my bag following him out. "Miss. Moore, this is Kylie Hudson the new transfer student," mr jones told a thin blonde girl sitting in one of the waiting chairs. She stood as we alked towards her a bright smile one her face. "Welcome to Newbaury high," she said. She extended her arm and I shook it lightly. "I'm Samantha Moore, the student council president," she told me. "Kylie Hudson, you can call me Kye though," I told her.

"Miss. Moore is in most of your classes so she has offered to show you around," Mr. Jones explained, "however one of your pack mates could as well but not many of them are taking the advanced classes you are," I shook my head. "I'm fine with Samantha showing me around, so long as it's okay with her," I told him. Samantha assured me it was fine and Mr. Jones sent us off to class.

"So where did you transfer from?" Samantha asked as we walked down the empty hallway. The walls were decorated with fliers about some upcoming dance in the school colors of red and gold. The lockers were a deep red that popped against the plain white of the walls. "John F. Kennedy, in Denver," I told her. "In Colorado?" She asked. "Well yeah, why?" I asked. "I'm surprised is all that's not NightShade pack land. It's Moon...Ridge pack land right?" She asked. "Yeah, I'm surprised you know," I said. "Well I'm kinda interested in knowing about werewolves because you guys live right down the street," she explained, "So why were you in MoonRidge pack land?"

"My dad is in the military so we were able to live were ever with out causing trouble," I told her.

"So what's Denver like?" She asked. I started walking again and she lead me down a different hallway. "Like most big cities loud and crowded but their were mountains and nature not far away so it wasn't bad. When I was living in Chicago I loved it but it was just to packed," I told her. "You've moved a lot huh?" I nodded. "My dad's been in the military for eight years and his posts usually only last for three months or so," I explained.

We stood outside a classroom door and I waited for her to knock but she just seemed to be thinking about something and have me a strange look. "What?" I asked. "Oh, sorry I didn't mean to stare its just your really different," she said. "What do you mean," I asked. "Well most of the wolves don't really talk to us I mean they don't ignore us or anything but they just stay to themselves and they usually never come to school events or take advanced classes," she said. "It's harder for them they aren't use to it they won't make the effort to make friends or get to know you because they're use to having a connection to our pack mates," I tried to explain, "we really don't have to try hard we already know about their family life and secrets we can even feel emotions through the pack bond if their strong enough. If you pushed them a bit they would probably open up they just don't realize their not being social," she just nodded but I don't think she got everything I was trying to say, you couldn't explain the bond between pack mates it was something that just was. We were all connected the ones you loved and the ones you stood and even the ones you hated. You knew them and you were connected and they were a part of you one you didn't even have to reach for to grasp. I knew this because I could feel it even before I got here it was just something that was. "So are we going to go in?" I asked nodding towards the door. "Ahhh, I forgot," she said. She knocked on the door which soon opened and a tall blonde woman stepped out. She was nearly six feet tall with her heels on that looked sharp enough to kill. He dirty blonde hair was pulled up into a bun with a couple loose strands falling in her face. "Kylie Hudson?" She asked looking at me. I nodded. "Good we were just about to get to the fun part," she said and opened the door wider for us to come in. I took a seat near the back next to the window that had a nice view of a brick wall.

"Alright, so this month's homework is a project you will split up into groups of three and pick a book, which I must approve of course, and you will find examples of how our society is represented or how the society in the book itself is influenced by our society. At the end of the month a minimum of a five page paper is due and you and your partners will give a presentation to the class about your book," my new Ap English teacher Mrs. Hall explained. I expected to hear groans of protest but everyone seemed to accept their fate without much complaint. "All right break up into groups, " she called and everyone started shuffling around. I didn't really know anyone in the class so I just stayed seated I might get stuck with a group once they were all sorted out but maybe I could ask to do the project by myself. I usually worked by myself in projects because if my dad's post changed suddenly I didn't want to leave anyone hanging and I liked doing the work myself so I knew it would turn out alright. "Hey Kye," I opened my eyes to see Samantha in front of my desk another Blonde girl next to her except she had dark blue eyes that made me want to melt. I could also just make out a birthmark on her right shoulder. "Yeah?" I asked. "Do you want to work with us?" Samantha asked me. There was a small hitch in her voice and I noticed for the first time her great beat was faster than normal. She was nervous around me which made me wonder why she wanted to work with me. "Sure, I'm fine with it if you are," I told her. "Why wouldn't I be?" She asked. "I don't know your the one who's nervous," I stated.

"H..why do you think that?" She asked. "The hitch in you voice when you asked, the rate of you heartbeat, the fact that your scent is getting stronger which most likely means your sweating," I said. The blonde next to her burst out laughing drawing everyone who wasn't already watching, attention to us. "Well that was better than I expected. Hi I'm Gwynn." The other girl said. She pulled a chair out from under a nearby desk and sat down next to me. Samantha did the same but she was still a bit nervous. " I don't bite you know," I told her. "Awwww," Gwynn pouted. "You should I hear Samantha likes that," Gwynn said with a wink. "Shut up Gwynn," Samantha said. "I'm not nervous because of that it's just well I didn't think you'd say yes," she told me. "See isn't she adorable?" Gwynn asked. "A little," I agreed which caused Samantha to blush.

"Do you guys know which book you want to use?" Mrs. Hall asked walking over. "Uh were still deciding," Gwynn muttered. "On?" She asked. Both Samantha and Gwynn were silent so I jumped in. "Samantha wanted to do it on some werewolf book she read but Gwynn disagreed because she thought it would be rude to me, and Sam said that I would be a good resource. Which Gwynn pointed out was why it would be rude so now where trying to think of another book," I told her. "Ok... I'll come back," she said and walked away. "Thanks for the save," Gwynn said. "Why was I the bad guy?" Samantha asked. "Because it's fun to tease you," Gwynn told her. I agreed.

"Kye, move, move, move! I'm going to miss out on getting a burrito!" Gwynn said as she propelled me down the hall. I once again found myself being dragged by the wrist but this time it was by a scrawny human girl. "Gwynn you not suppose to run in the halls," Samantha called from behind us. When the bell rang to dismiss third hour Gwynn had jumped up and pulled me from the room leaving my bag and Samantha behind. She rushed into the lunch line which was empty with Gwynn being the first one here. She let me go and went to grab her burrito while I grabbed two burgers. When we left the lunch line Gwynn lead me over to Samantha who handed me my backpack. "Thanks," I told her and sat down. Both Samantha and Gwynn stared at me like I was crazy. "What now?" I asked them. "It's just I thought you would be sitting with the rest of your pack," Samantha said. "Yeah, talking to us is one thing but the pack always eats together," Gwynn agreed. "Relax, the world won't end if I eat with you, but if you don't want me to than I can go," I offered. "No! Stay we weren't trying to make you leave," Samantha said hurriedly. "We actually like you. Don't let Samantha scare you away," Gwynn chipped in. Samantha smacked her and sat down across from me, Gwynn plopped down next to me and started eating her burrito.

"You know I don't understand how you wolves can eat so much and still look so good," Gwynn said as I started my second burger. "We have a high metabolism which only increases as we reach 16 and if we don't eat enough it would start burning to many calories and we would grow sick quickly," I said. "Huh, hey I was wondering," Gwynn started but then stopped as if unsure how to ask. "Well?" I prodded. "What do I smell like?" She finally asked. Samantha started choking from trying not to laugh. Gwynn blushed and said it didn't matter. "It's fine," I told her. I never really realized that humans couldn't smell the personalized scent everyone carried. "Do you really want to know?" I asked. She shot a look at Samantha before nodding. I reached out and pulled her towards me, I rested my nose in the crook of her neck and let her scent surround me. "You smell like cinnamon and lilies," I told her before I let go, "it's actually quite nice," her face was bright red when I let her go and Samantha was staring at me again. "What now?" I asked. I was getting more strange stares in the last two days then in the whole eight years I lived outside of Maine. "It's nothing," Samantha said quickly. "No it's not," I said. "It's just I'm shocked you can pick up her scent like that, and Gwynn's just blushing cause she has a crush on you," Sam said. "No I don't!" Gwynn quickly yelled another blush creeping up her neck.

"Hey, Kye! How are all those smart people classes!" Carson yelled as he sat down next to Samantha, his tray loaded with food. "Their fine," I told him. Both Gwynn and Samantha were staring at Carson and this time I just laughed at their expressions. "Kye, move over," Ember said shoving me towards Gwynn as she sat down on my other side. "No need to bruise me Em," I told her snagging a piece of pizza from Carson's tray. "Um, Hi?" Samantha said. "Hey Samantha," Carson said. "How'd you get the student council president to talk to you she is so out of your league," Carson said causing Sam to blush. "Carson shut up and eat, you're the one who isn't close to the presidents league," Ember said. I rested my head against Embers shoulder as she and Carson continued their fight which Gwynn gladly joined in after she stopped gaping at them.
