Chapter Four
On the 1st of July, Year 0 of the Imperial Era (IE), the Durancia Empire teetered on the brink of collapse. Months had passed since Emperor Charalis I seized power, and his rule had become synonymous with fear, oppression, and brutality. The once-proud empire had devolved into a state of despair, where freedom was nearly nonexistent, and suffering had become the norm.
Under Charalis's reign, the empire descended into a nightmarish dictatorship. The healthiest men were forcibly conscripted into the military, while the rest were subjected to grueling labor to sustain an economy that was rapidly deteriorating. Aristocrats were given a simple choice: submit to Charalis or face extermination, with their families suffering the same fate. Public executions became a common spectacle, where those accusedâwhether guilty or innocentâwere put to death in brutal displays of power. Fear dictated life in Durancia, and with it came famine, economic collapse, and a sharp increase in the mortality rate, which had risen by an alarming 30%.
Despite the evident turmoil within his own borders, Charalis's ambitions remained unchecked. His paranoia grew, particularly regarding his siblingsâhe feared they might have fled to the Hania Dynasty, seeking protection under the ever-expanding power of Nicholas and his forces. Yet, his confidence overshadowed his caution. He believed that the Hania Dynasty and its allies could be crushed within weeks, allowing him to claim the heart of the supercontinent and establish an empire that would demand the submission of all surrounding kingdoms.
Determined to realize his vision, Charalis initiated one of the largest military mobilizations in history. Durancia's armed forces swelled to nearly 500,000 men, composed of traditional medieval infantry, siege weapons such as cannons and trebuchets, battle sorcerers, and monstrous beings like ogres. The air force boasted over 20,000 wyvern riders, making it one of the largest aerial combat divisions in recorded history. Confident in his strength, Charalis declared war.
The neighboring countries of Ouba, Nishioka, Taishung, Hania, and Luandol had long been wary of Durancia's expansionist ambitions. The declaration of war served as the final catalyst for them to unite under a common cause. Thus, the Five Entente was formedâa military and economic alliance established to counter the Durancia threat. Unlike Durancia, which relied on traditional weaponry and raw numbers, the Five Entente possessed advanced firearms reminiscent of the early World War I era, including bolt-action rifles and heavy machine guns. Their military superiority, coupled with superior tactics, would soon be tested on the battlefield.
Meanwhile, the Durancia Empire found an ally in the 14 Alliances, a vast but unstable coalition of powerful empires and kingdoms. This alliance, led by the Greater Vostok Empire, included formidable nations such as the Satam Empire, the Holy Argusten Empire, Kardovia, the Greater Pardovenese Empire, Aksov, the Holy Kingdom of Nursado, and many others. While Durancia was now part of this vast coalition, internal conflicts and competing interests plagued the 14 Alliances, making them a fragile force at best.
By August, the Durancia Empire had launched its full-scale invasion. The first and second army groups advanced towards the defensive lines of the Five Entente, expecting an easy victory. What followed was a massacre.
The Durancian soldiers, armed with crossbows and swords, faced a horrifying reality as they marched into the firepower of pre-World War I weaponry. Bolt-action rifles picked off soldiers before they could even close the distance, and machine guns, positioned as makeshift anti-aircraft guns, shredded the wyvern riders out of the sky. Within the first hour of combat, the Durancian forces suffered catastrophic losses. Over 340,000 soldiers were killed, including nearly the entire air force, while the Entente sustained only 1,000 casualties.
Despite the overwhelming defeat, the elite officers of Durancia forced the remaining soldiers to continue fighting. Those who attempted to retreat were executed on the spot. Desperation took hold as commanders resorted to barbaric tacticsâforcing soldiers to use their fallen comrades as shields in a vain attempt to advance. The war dragged on, with each passing day seeing Durancia's forces dwindle further. By the 13th of August, Durancia had been nearly surrounded, its capital teetering on the edge of surrender.
Emperor Charalis, once so confident in his conquest, was now faced with the bitter reality of his failure. The walls of his empire crumbled, and his forces were no more. Enraged and overwhelmed with paranoia, he suffered a complete mental breakdown. In his madness, he resorted to excessive drug use, further spiraling into insanity. The once-feared emperor turned into a monster, indiscriminately slaughtering his guards and consorts in a fit of uncontrollable rage.
As the night of August 14th fell upon the capital, Charalis's reign came to an abrupt end. Consumed by his despair, he poisoned himself in his chamber, bringing an end to his brutal rule. With their leader dead and no forces left to fight, the remnants of the Durancia government surrendered unconditionally. At precisely 8 PM, the war was officially overâthe Durancia Empire had capitulated.
With the fall of Durancia, the geopolitical landscape of the supercontinent underwent a dramatic shift. The victorious Hania Dynasty found itself in possession of vast new territories and a significantly larger population. Nicholas, now recognized as a legendary military strategist and leader, returned from the frontlines to address his people.
On the morning of August 15th, he delivered a speech that would forever be remembered in history. Standing before a massive crowd, he formally declared the transformation of the Hania Dynasty into the Great Hania Empire. In recognition of his unparalleled leadership, he was granted the title of Founding Emperor. To ensure stability and governance, he established the Imperial Constitution, a document enshrining seven amendments that would define the new empire's laws and policies.
The redistribution of Durancia's territories was carefully managed. The newly annexed lands were divided into multiple provinces, each governed under the Empire's rule. Meanwhile, as compensation for their alliance, the nations of Ouba, Nishioka, Taishung, and Luandol were granted autonomy within the Great Hania Empire, becoming self-governing regions while remaining under imperial jurisdiction.
The swift rise of the Great Hania Empire sent shockwaves across the world. Some nations viewed it with intrigue, while others saw it as a potential threat. Among them was the Greater Vostok Empire, which immediately sought to extend an invitation to Nicholas, offering the Great Hania Empire a position within the 14 Alliances. Nicholas, ever the tactician, considered the offer but remained cautious, playing the diplomatic game to secure his empire's future.
Further cementing his rule, Nicholas oversaw the peaceful reintegration of the Taoke Kingdom's eastern territories. The exiled Taoke royal family was welcomed back into their homeland, though they no longer ruled as sovereigns. Instead, they were inducted into the Imperial Familia, a growing assembly of former rulers whose territories had been integrated into the Empire.
In the days following the war, solemn ceremonies were held to honor the fallen. At a grand cemetery, officials and citizens alike gathered to pay their respects, commemorating the sacrifices made for the creation of a new empire. Though the battlefield had gone silent, the echoes of war lingered in the hearts of many.
Thus began a new eraâthe Great Hania Empire stood tall, its influence stretching across the supercontinent. With new alliances, territories, and ambitions, Nicholas prepared to face the future, knowing that greater challenges lay ahead.
The world had changed. And this was only the beginning.
