Chapter Three
The cold stone walls of the Durancia royal dungeon echoed with the groans of a once-powerful monarch. King Vanshau III, now a prisoner in his castle, sat in filth, his body weak from days of starvation and mistreatment. Rotten food lay untouched in the corner, the smell only a minor discomfort compared to the pain of his wounds. His second son, Prince Charalis, had orchestrated this humiliation, ensuring that his father's last days would be filled with suffering. With a twisted smirk, Charalis entered the dungeon, his polished boots tapping against the floor as he approached the frail king.
Charalis knelt beside his father, mockingly whispering, "Tell me, father, where are my dear siblings? Surely you know?"
The king, exhausted but defiant, shook his head. He did not know their whereabouts, nor would he have revealed it even if he did. Enraged by the lack of answers, Charalis removed his belt and whipped his father repeatedly, savoring every strike. Blood splattered on the cold floor as the old king gasped in pain until unconsciousness mercifully took him. Charalis stood, satisfied, and left the dungeon to prepare his next move.
With his father subdued, Charalis wasted no time in restructuring the laws of Durancia. The new decrees were harsh and tyrannical. Capital punishment became commonplace, and even minor infractions led to severe public beatings. The populace, regardless of age, gender, or status, was forced to participate in these punishments, a grotesque display of forced loyalty. Fear took root across the kingdom, and whispers of rebellion were crushed before they could take form.
Meanwhile, in the flourishing Hania Dynasty, the siblings of CharalisâPrince Xavier and his sistersâarrived with their ill mother, seeking refuge. Nicholas welcomed them but made it clear that the Hania Dynasty's military was not yet strong enough to challenge Charalis. He promised them asylum and ensured their mother received the best medical treatment available, introducing them to the advanced medicines of the dynastyâsomething they had never seen before. They marveled at the seemingly miraculous healing properties of the treatments, still holding the outdated belief that such advancements were the work of magic. Nicholas provided them with a comfortable yet modest mansion, allowing them to stay under his protection.
As time passed, the prosperity of the Hania Dynasty became increasingly evident. The contrast between its thriving cities and the crumbling remnants of other nations drew even more people to its borders. One such struggling nation was the Chemet Free State, a coastal region known for its massive fleet of wooden ships used for trade, commerce, and military purposes. However, internal strife plagued the country. Political instability, rampant piracy, and widespread corruption had turned the once-powerful state into a fractured domain. Grand Duchess Chamela, the beleaguered ruler of Chemet, found herself overwhelmed by the challenges before her.
Desperate for stability, Chamela reached out to Nicholas, pleading for assistance in restoring order to her realm. Nicholas, seeing an opportunity to expand his influence and secure a vital maritime presence, agreed under one condition: Chemet Free State would integrate into the Hania Dynasty. With few alternatives, Chamela conceded, offering her entire navy as compensation. The deal was sealed, and within three weeks, Chemet was absorbed into the growing dynasty.
With this acquisition, the Hania Dynasty now had direct access to the open seas. Infrastructure development became a priority, as ports were expanded and modernized. Early steel ships and cement vessels were introduced, marking the beginning of a new era of naval power. Pirates who had once ruled the waters found themselves hunted down by Nicholas's disciplined forces. Some surrendered, while others met their end in desperate attempts to flee. The coastal economy flourished with new industries, ranging from tourism and spice trade to shipbuilding and commercial fishing.
The Hania Dynasty's rapid expansion did not go unnoticed. Other major powers began establishing diplomatic ties, recognizing the rising influence of Nicholas's rule. The Nishioka Dynasty, Luandol Kingdom, Ouba Kingdom, Taishung Kingdom, Holy Emdesia Empire, Greater Vostok Empire, Falaok Kingdom, Ranpok Kingdom, Bortus Empire, and Eldenere Kingdom all sought to engage in trade and negotiations, wary yet intrigued by the Hania Dynasty's technological advancements and political stability.
However, not all regions experienced such prosperity. The Taoke Kingdom, a vast and resource-rich land, found itself in chaos. Political discord and civil unrest tore the kingdom apart. As an elective monarchy, the nation had long struggled with maintaining a stable government. Four factions vied for control: The King's Party, the Republican Party, the Transitional Government (a military junta backed by the Holy Kingdom of Nursado), and the Independent Party.
Tensions escalated, and within days, the Taoke Kingdom fragmented into three separate entities. The royal family, along with the King's Party officials, fled to the Sakvell Dukedom. Civilians, seeking safety from the turmoil, migrated to neighboring countries such as the Tschonn Dukedom, Leung Kingdom, the Mountainous Empire of Dzhungkar, Tamberlane Kingdom, Durancia Empire, and Sakvell Dukedom. Seizing the opportunity, the Holy Kingdom of Nursado swiftly invaded the northern territories, claiming the capital in the name of its religious doctrine. Meanwhile, the western independent provinces fell under the control of Tschonn and Dzhungkar, expanding their domains. In a bold move, Tschonn Dukedom declared itself the Tschonn Empire overnight, marking yet another shift in the geopolitical landscape.
Back in Durancia, Charalis prepared for his grand spectacle. His father, the once-mighty King Vanshau III, was dragged from his cell, barely able to stand. The execution was held in the main square, with thousands forced to watch. Children, elders, and commoners alike stood in silent horror as Charalis took his father's longsword and raised it high. Without hesitation, he brought the blade down, beheading his father in a single stroke. Blood pooled at his feet as he turned to face the crowd, declaring himself Emperor of the Durancia Empire.
The first day of Charalis's reign marked the beginning of a new eraâone of unrelenting tyranny. His siblings, still in the Hania Dynasty, received the news with a mixture of sorrow and fury. Tears were shed, and anger boiled within their hearts. Nicholas, upon learning of the brutal execution, felt no sympathy for the fallen king but saw Charalis's actions as a sign of an increasingly dangerous threat. Without hesitation, he severed all diplomatic ties with Durancia, declaring that the Hania Dynasty would have no association with a tyrant's rule.
As the Hania Dynasty continued to grow, its advancements in technology, military, and diplomacy positioned it as a dominant force in the world. Yet, the storm of war loomed on the horizon. With the fall of Taoke and the rise of the Tschonn Empire, along with Charalis's despotic rule, Nicholas knew that the peace his people enjoyed would not last forever. The foundation for future conflicts had been laid, and the fate of Terria was bound to the ambitions of kings, emperors, and revolutionaries alike.
And so, the Great Hania Empire stood at the precipice of a new eraâone where power, politics, and war would decide the destiny of nations.
