Chapter Two
After delivering a powerful speech to the citizens of Nicholassia, Nicholas set in motion a wave of unprecedented change that reshaped the continent of Terria. The transformation of the city-state sparked widespread interest, and news of its prosperity spread like wildfire. People from nearby towns and villages, eager for a better life, abandoned their old homes and migrated to Nicholassia. Within days, the population surged to 100,000, and the quality of life improved dramatically. Literacy rates soared, employment opportunities flourished, and life expectancy increased. With security, education, and infrastructure at the forefront, crime, corruption, and poverty significantly declined.
As the city thrived, merchants from across the continent sought opportunities in this emerging power. However, they encountered new trade regulations, including bans on excessive domestic hoarding and bribery. Some traders initially resisted these restrictions, but ultimately, they conformed. Recognizing the importance of economic diplomacy, Nicholas and his new officials drafted and signed trade agreements with visiting merchants, ensuring a structured and fair economy. The traders, though slightly dissatisfied with the strict policies, departed with no other option but to respect the city-state's regulations.
Nicholassia continued to grow, both economically and territorially. Through legal negotiations, Nicholas purchased vast lands from the Durancia Kingdom, expanding the city's jurisdiction to an impressive 30,384.1 square kilometers. The territory bordered several feudal countiesâMarsetz, Ogolva, Sadwen, and Kemfastâalongside the Chemet Free State, the Ouba Kingdom, the Luandol Kingdom, and the Nishioka Dynasty. The acquisition of land not only solidified Nicholassia's sovereignty but also facilitated further economic and political expansion.
Meanwhile, unrest simmered within the Durancia Kingdom. Several southern provinces declared independence, breaking away from royal authority. King Vanshau III, already beleaguered by political instability, found himself overwhelmed by the growing crisis. He suspected that external influences or internal betrayals had incited these rebellions, but he could not pinpoint the source of the discord. As he wrestled with the growing turmoil, his second son, Prince Charalis, secretly orchestrated a sinister plot.
Back in Nicholassia, progress continued unabated. The city evolved into a hub of technological advancement, with steam engines, clocks, linen clothing, and basic industrial machinery being developed. These innovations placed the city at the forefront of an industrial revolution, setting it apart from the rest of Terria. Aware of the geopolitical importance of diplomacy, Nicholas established formal relations with the surrounding counties and neighboring kingdoms. The Chemet Free State, Ouba Kingdom, Luandol Kingdom, and Nishioka Dynasty all formed alliances with Nicholassia, eager to benefit from its rapid advancements. Trade agreements flourished, bolstering economic ties and cementing Nicholassia's status as a formidable power.
Despite these successes, challenges arose. Unauthorized individuals attempted to infiltrate the city-state without proper documentation, and counterfeit goods bearing the trademarks of Nicholassian companies began circulating. To counter these threats, Nicholas swiftly enacted new laws and strengthened border security. His firm but fair leadership ensured the integrity of the Hania Dynasty's economic and social stability.
In March, an unexpected threat emerged when a massive forest fire broke out near the city. Investigations revealed that a dragon had caused the blaze. Nicholassia's elite militia acted swiftly, capturing the creature. To their astonishment, the dragon transformed into a human and, showing remorse, pleaded for forgiveness. Instead of punishing her severely, Nicholas issued a stern warning and released her. The dragon girl, humbled, returned to her mountain home and reported the incident to her leader, the Dragon King Arshlao. Though disappointed by her recklessness, Arshlao became intrigued by the growing power of Nicholassia. Days later, a newfound alliance was forged between the Hania Dynasty and the dragon clan, marking an unprecedented union between humanity and dragons.
In April, the four feudal countiesâMarsetz, Ogolva, Sadwen, and Kemfastâformally integrated into Nicholassia, further expanding its borders. Recognizing the historical significance of this transformation, Nicholas declared a new era, renaming his city-state as the Hania Dynasty, after his alias during his early days in Terria. With its name change, the dynasty solidified its place as a dominant force in the region.
The military was also modernized. The Hania Dynasty's armed forces grew to 10,000 men equipped with rudimentary rifles and swords. A naval force emerged as well, with a fleet of 20 cruiser-like ships patrolling the vast rivers forming the eastern frontier. Technological advancements continued to accelerate, and within just four months, the Hania Dynasty's industries reached a level comparable to Earth's 19th century. Neighboring kingdoms marveled at its rapid development, attempting to replicate its technology. However, without the proper knowledge or infrastructure, their efforts fell short. This technological disparity led to further diplomatic discussions and agreements with the Hania Dynasty, allowing controlled knowledge-sharing in exchange for trade and political alliances.
Meanwhile, turmoil gripped the Durancia Kingdom. King Vanshau's authority weakened as internal strife escalated. His worst fears were realized when an insurrection broke out, fueled by rogue military factions, mercenaries, and aristocrats seeking to overthrow the monarchy. Among the conspirators stood his own son, Prince Charalis. A spy within the court relayed the treachery to Vanshau, but it was too late. When Vanshau confronted Charalis, his own guards turned against him, placing him under arrest. The king, once a mighty ruler, found himself betrayed in the most clichéd but devastating fashion.
As the coup unfolded, Vanshau's first son, Prince Xavier, witnessed the unfolding treachery. Understanding the imminent danger, he quietly gathered his sisters, including Princess Emilia and Princess Damets, and the royal family's most loyal retainers. Under the cover of night, they fled the capital, taking only their most essential belongings.
When Charalis finally took control of the palace, he discovered the royal chambers empty. Enraged, he commanded his mercenaries to track down his fleeing siblings. His grand scheme was not only to usurp the throne but also to declare himself the first emperor of the newly-formed Durancia Empire. To cement his power, he planned to publicly execute his father, making him an example to ensure no one would ever defy him. However, despite his arrogance, Charalis was no fool. A lingering doubt crept into his mindâwhat if his plan failed? He knew that his power grab was bold but also dangerous. If things did not unfold as expected, he would need to adapt and secure his rule through cunning strategy.
As Charalis schemed and the Durancia Kingdom fell into chaos, the Hania Dynasty stood firm, thriving under Nicholas's leadership. The fate of the continent was shifting, and a new age had begunâone shaped by progress, betrayal, and the unstoppable rise of the Hania Dynasty.
