Ch. 161 Memorize Each One (1)
It took a long time for Professor Lassenâs scheming to finally be sorted out. Louise discovered one thing about the professor; once she conceived a purpose, she never gave up. She had dragged on and delayed the hearings, giving excuses such as:
Strained self.
Canât eat.
Personal schedule.
Louiseâs hands trembled as she held the papers for her hearing. Such trivial reasons kept delaying them, and Louise hadnât been able to speak to the Ethics Committee until todayâone day before her exams! The importance of the first exam couldnât be overlooked. It was said that a good start was already half the battle.
âMiss Louise Sweeney.â
Louise quickly looked up from the documents when the committee chairman called her name. There were three elderly men seated behind the table, each one of them fixing her with strict stares.
âLetâs look at page 48.â
Everyone turned over their papers, and Louise quickly unfolded page 48.
âProfessor Lassen has admitted that she was deeply involved in Professor Hillâs exams. Is it true?â
It was true. Louise was in Professor Hillâs class, and she had vowed she would take the difficult exam questions.
âFrom the look on your face, it must be true.â
âBut.â
Louise firmly gripped the documents and lifted her head.
âProfessor Hill gave me the usual test questions. The Professorâs past problems and average score will prove it.â
Everyone took an equally difficult, but fair, test.
âVery well, thatâs all I want to check. You may go back.â
âAlready?â
âYes. There is no reason to hold a student during exam period.â
Hearing that remark, Louise realized that the resolution must nearly be decided. She spoke up carefully.
âWhat about Professor Hill?â
The chairman smiled awkwardly.
âWell, Professor Wayne Hill is popular in the Academy.â
ââ¦Huh?â
Except Professor Hill wasnât popular at all. Even with the help of the student council, he could barely fill his classes.
âStella Lapis has asked the same question with a look of concern for Professor Hill.â
âStella?â
âYes, and Ian Audmonial as well. Students must be enthusiastic over the young genius professor.â
âO-oh, thatâ¦yes, he is a great professor! Heâs the light of the Academy and the future.â
Louise inadvertently lied to the ethics committee. It was closer to wishful thinking, really. The Academy should love a great professor! She hoped that Professor Hill would be treated generously.
The chairman smiled as if he found Louiseâs excited reaction amusing, however, when he spoke his voice was an austere tone.
âProfessor Wayne Hillâs fate will be announced once a decision is made. Professor Lassen as well.â
Louise bowed to the elders and stood up. She stepped out onto the chilly hallway and spotted Stella wearing a gray coat.
âStella?â
âLouise.â
Stella walked up to her with a worried look on her face.
âDid it go well?â
âYes. There was nothing special. Were you summoned here?â
She shook her head.
âNo?â
âYou were summoned here when the first exam is tomorrow.â
âSo?â
âItâs not fair.â
Stellaâs cheeks were pink and her gaze was averted. Was she embarrassed?
âOh.â
Louise decided to hazard a guess.
âYou were standing here in the cold because it seemed unfair if you studied hard while I was here?â
Stella peeked at Louise and gave a small nod.
Oh my god, Stella. Why did you show all this cuteness now?
âI donât think this is unfair!â
âBut Iâ¦I wanted to do this.â
Louise gave a chuckle.
âTo make me the top student?â
Stella gave a hasty protest as they started walking together side-by-side.
âWhat are you talking about? I just donât want you to make excuses when I become top student.â
âStella, donât tell me you pay attention to me.â
âWho cares about you!â
Louise stopped walking gave a delighted laugh.
âYou do care about me, Stella Lapis.â
âI dare you to say that again! â
âYou like this, donât you? Speaking this way together.â
Louise started walking again, her eyes alight. Stella stared at the other girlâs back for a moment, before hurriedly catching up to her.
âI donât like it!â
âYes, okay.â
âI donât like you!â
âOkay.â
Stella followed her all the way to the library, yelling, âI donât like you!â The librarian said, âStella Lapis! You shouldnât confess to Louise Sweeney loudly in the library.â Stella spoke in a smaller voice, âI donât like youâ¦â but no one except Louise heard her.

The next day, Louise successfully completed her first exam. This time she set her own rules, never paying attention to anything other than her paper. Especially things that fell to the ground. She didnât want to get involved in another incident.
When Louise stepped out of the exam room, she happened to spot Simon coming out the next room over. The pair faced each other with surprised expressions, and then shared a laugh. It was funny how they took different exams yet finished at the same time.
Louise rushed towards Simon. She had seen him in the library a few times recently, always studying. He hardly ever seemed to move from that spot, and she worried that he was skipping meals.
âMy concern was right.â
Simonâs face was thinner than it used to be.
âYou havenât been eating properly, have you?â
âIf I leave the library, Iâll lose my spot to another student.â
It was a valid excuse. According to the rules of the library, if you were away for more than 20 minutes, they could move out your things.
âSo, how was the exam?â
âIâm not sure.â
However, he wore a quiet, satisfied smile. He must have done well.
âDo you have another one tomorrow?â
âI have two.â
âSo youâll go to the library again.â
Louise glanced at her watch. It was just about the end of lunchtime.
âSimon, if youâre not busy, would you like to eat with me?â
âNow? Weâll have to run quite a bit.â
âWe can run!â
Louise started running with her bag flapping at her side, and Simon jogged after her. Just as they caught view of the cafeteria, the caretaker was putting up a sign that said âLunch closing.â Louise pleaded at her as they approached, and the caretaker generously allowed them inside.
Todayâs lunch menu was highly acclaimed for its excellent combination of perfectly juicy meat and sweet fermented vegetables.
âThereâs no more meat.â
Louise sighed as she saw the tray of broccoli, carrots, and onions with the meaty flavor left over.
âWell everyone likes meat, so it canât be helped.â
Simon pulled out a piece of meat from underneath a piece of broccoli and set it on Louiseâs plate.
âIâm alright.â
âThatâs fine. You like meat, donât you?â
Of course she liked meat, but Simon did too. Louise cut the small piece of meat in half and placed a piece it on Simonâs plate. The pair had always shared everything since they were young. The caretaker tearfully watched the both of them.
Louise and Simon finished their plates of meat and vegetables, and even cleaned their bowls of yuzu sherbet afterwards. The cool citrus dessert was the perfect palette cleanser after greasy meat. The caretaker was a genius, as the satisfying meal completely wiped away their exam fatigue.
âSimon, are you going back to the library?â
âYes.â
âArenât you tired?â
âNot yet.â
âWell, thenâ¦â
âHmm?â
âI never said it, but Iâm cheering for you. Really.â
Simon gave a soft smile and patted Louise on the head. He already knew that she was cheering for him. Whenever he occasionally ran into her at the library, her eyes sparkled whenever she waved at him, as if her mind was inclined towards him. He thought she looked adorable that way.
âThank you.â
âI feel bad about you studying abroad, butâ¦I think itâs a great choice.â
âItâs two years.â
âI hope you can find what youâre looking for in that time.â
Louise did not specify what he would find. There were so many possibilities for him, and no one knew which one of them would blossom.
âYou know, Simon. I heard there were trees in Ajentin so big that it takes ten people to encircle it.â
âReally?â
âYes, so be sure to see it in person. And I want to know if the leaves really are as big as an umbrella.â
âI suppose Iâd better get one. You need a new umbrella after you gave it away to the street florist.â
âBut if you bring plants from other countries without permission, youâll go to jail.â
âWell, Iâve got a little immunityâ¦the chance for me to succeed the throne is pretty high.â
Louise looked surprised at his joke. Simon never really like to talk about his position before.
âOf course, youâll bother me if I break the law. Iâll just draw a sketch of it.â
âYes, please do that. We canât have newspaper headlines of âLord Hillard smuggling large leaves as an umbrella replacement.ââ
âThat would be a great article.â
Simon looked pleased, and Louise became a little nervous. Simon was becoming more playful, and at this rate he really would return home with a giant leaf.
