Ch. 157 Terrible, Perfect Proposal (2)
Claire called out Ian in a small voice, and he walked towards them at a leisurely pace.
âIf my ears hadnât frozen in the winter, I think I might have heard some interesting news.â
Ian walked past Count Iris and stood in front of Claire.
âThe talent Iâve been waiting for will finally enter the work force.â
âYouâ¦you were listening?â
âI couldnât not hear you. You know your voice is quite loud among the student council members.â
âThatâs true.â
âAnd I do need a smart worker who has a loud voice and is a quick learner. Of course, youâve always proven that quality to me.â
Ian looked around at Claireâs brother.
âYou have a very bright sister. You must be proud.â
âYour Highness.â
âYes, Count. Tell me. What will you have Claire Iris do in this world?â
The count had a troubled look on his face for a moment. No, he looked like he was calculating in his head.
âWell, we can work it to the direction that pleases youâ¦â
Claire suddenly wanted the ground to swallow her.
âItâs not like that! Why donât you get it?â
Anyone could have understood why Ian was trying to say.
âI have a choice! For meââ
âClaire Iris.â
However, Count Iris cut in and looked down at her with his usual sternness.
âYou are before the Crown Prince. Pay attention to your words and behavior.â
âBrother!â
âExcuse me, Your Highness, are you going to go back to the Academy later?â
âYes. I hope Claire Iris will accompany me, if she permits.â
âVery well.â
Despite the countâs reply, Ian looked at Claire, as if he would only move with her answer. Claire stared at him for a moment before saying yes. It was closer to a sigh than a word.
She trudged onto the carriage without any shoes. In the darkened space, she sank weakly into her seat and wrapped her head with her hands. Soon the door closed, and the carriage started to move.
âClaire Iris.â
A soothing voice spoke opposite of her. Claire murmured something she had forgotten to say.
âThank youâ¦Your Highness.â
âYou can discard that last title. You can substitute it with something else, of course.â
He looked out the window with his chin resting on his hand.
ââ¦If I were you, I would be angry.â
While Claireâs engagement was off, she was given a chance to work. But that still didnât mean anything to her. There was no decision to respect Claire. Perhaps her elder brother nodded because he approved of her relationship with the Crown Prince. She was no longer married, but her situation was no different. It was just that Ian paid the highest price.
âItâsâ¦itâs miserable.â
âI suppose so.â
âItâs embarrassing.â
âYes, I know. I would feel similar.â
Claire looked up at Ian.
âHow many other Claire Irises are there in this country? That are in the same situation you were in?â
Ian felt sad as he thought about it as a man of royal descent who had to make many decisions.
âIâm not stupid either. Iâm not under the illusion that I saved you a little while ago.â
âBut itâs a little better than before.â
Claire forced a smile.
âEven though nothing has changedâ¦â
âYes.â
Ian agreed with her.
âNothing has changed.â
Another person like Claire Iris may be standing where she didnât want to be. Some people donât even know theyâre in a mud hut. Others may, but they donât know how to get away. Many would have given up.
âItâs not right. And I have a duty to fight what is wrong.â
He would work to remove even a single cup of mudâno, even a single dropâeven if it was a lifetime worth of effort.
âBut I have only two hands and one head. Thatâs why I told that to the Count.â
âYou want me to help you with your work?â
âI hope youâll want to work with me.â
Ian adjusted his words.
âIf possible, to make you the last Claire Iris.â
âThose words are so nice that theyâre cruel.â
ââ¦.Sorry.â
Ian apologized immediately, but he did not take back what he said.
âStill, your work will be very helpful. Youâre bold and strategic.â
âIs Louise Sweeneyâs labor not enough?â
âWell, that great work force belongs to the Sweeney family.â
âSo you won the heart but didnât get the labor.â
Claire gave a hearty chuckle..
âYes, heart and labor are separateâwait. You know?â
She knew that Ian and Louise belonged to each other?
âHow can I not know? Everyone in the student council knows. It made it easier to manage the rumors that way. Oh, but Dean Crissis still didnât notice.â
âBut why does everyone pretend not to knowâ¦.â
Ian soon found a profound realization.
âYou all decided on it, right?â
âItâs because Louise is shy.â
If Louise found out that the student council knew about her romance, she probably wouldnât go near Ian.
âYou saved me.â
But Ian couldnât save Claire.
âWe were all having fun with it. Louise was going around with a face like, âWhy does no one suspect?â It was quite funny.â
Claire stopped to giggle again, then composed herself and looked back at Ian.
âPresident.â
âHmm?â
âAlthough itâs cruelâ¦yes, I want to be the last Claire Iris.â
There will be weak people be born in the future. People who donât even have a choice.
âSo I hope you will let me work with you.â
âJust to confirm, this is your choice?â
Claire nodded fervently.
âThereâs actually only one road left for me now. Itâs hard to say that itâs a choice, butâ¦.â
She forced a smile.
âIf I follow this path, maybe Iâll find a crossroad.â
She could then choose a direction she wanted. That was what was most important. She couldnât get anywhere just by standing here.
âYouâll find it. Of course, I intend to offer you some perks to keep you on my way.â
âLike what?â
âThatâs a story Iâll tell you if you pass the recruitment tests. Even if you are my noble friend, the test must be fair.â
âThatâs my favorite word. Fair.â
âI know. Not many people can beat you under that condition.â
It would be appreciated by anyone who saw her shining presence at the Academy.
Before she knew it, the carriage stopped. They werenât at the Academy, however. Claire looked outside with a puzzled face, and Ian explained with a shrug.
âMy fiancée has no gloves for the cold.â
âThis is the Sweeney mansion, isnât it?â
Claire looked at it in wonder. She had heard stories about it many times, but it was her first time to actually be here.
âYes. But put off your visit to another time.â
âBut I made an appointment to see Mrs. Sweeney.â
âDonât worry. Iâll cover for you. Besides, she and I need to have an important conversation. She still hasnât decided on a new hairdresser. â
âShall I wait in the carriage then?â
âNo, you can go back first.â
ââ¦First?â
Claire looked at him questioningly, and Ian nodded in apology.
âTo confess, I am running away from that.â
âRunning away? From what?â
âScary.â
Ian pointed his hand out of the window, and there was Dean Crissis approaching, panting white breaths.
