Ch. 127 I Favor You (2)
âLouise Sweeney.â
ââ¦â
The girl could not bring herself to answer to that name, and didnât lift her head.
âMy best friend.â
He changed the name, searching for her.
âA faithful worker.â
Of course, Louise was like that in many ways.
âMy dear fiancée.â
ââ¦.â
âHolder of my special feelings.â
â â¦Mm.â
âIf youâre a fake, so am I. As you said before, we have a mutual influence on each other.â
Louise finally jerked her head upwards. That was what Louise had told the court official. Ian wasnât supposed to be around then.
âY-you heard that?â
âSorry.â
He couldnât confess to her that it was part of recorded history now.
âWh-why were you listening in! You werenât supposed to hear it!â
âNow I see that profane face again.â
He gently poked the faint crease between Louiseâs eyebrows.
âUghâ¦â
âIf youâre not dumping this poor guy, can you just answer me, holder of my special feelings?â
ââ¦â
âCome on.â
ââ¦â
âAll right, thenâmy fiancée?â
Louise wanted to cry. But he only had a stern look on his face that prompted her to answer quickly.
âOkay.â
âIs my faithful worker here?â
âYes.â
âThe person who made the pledge of friendship with me and Simon?â
ââ¦â
âLouise Sweeney.â
He said that name again, but the girl could not bring herself to open her mouth.
âI donât know why you always considered Alice and Louise separate.â
Louise doubted her ears for a moment. Alice.
âMy doll?â
âYes. But itâs also the name of the mind you wouldnât reveal before.â
He had imagined a secret Louise that he couldnât meet.
âIn the holy religion, the body and soul are a single pair, and the beginning and end are always together.â
Louise had learned this as well. This country believed in a holy religion and respected royal authority. Ian had been taught the doctrine as a child, and had also told Louise, âMy fiancée must believe in God.â
âIf Louise Sweeneyâs soul had disappeared, then the matching body would have crumbled away as well.â
âThatâ¦thatâsââ
âBut your body is strong. Even to the point of always getting yourself into trouble. So, if your body has other memories.â
Louise waited for the rest of the words with a nervous face.
âItâs because you opened your eyes to the memories that were engraved on that soul.â
âBut that timeâ¦â
âBesides, Alice and Louise can not be different. Iâm sure Mr. and Mrs. Sweeney would have been the first to notice.â
They were a couple that deeply cared about their daughter.
âBut as far as I know, the Sweeneys had never said, âMy daughter suddenly changed.ââ
âBut Iâ¦!â
âYou?â
She was about to answer, âI acted like Louise!â but she quickly shut her mouth. The story didnât say anything about the villainessâ childhood.
âI donât know. Iâ¦â
âYou are Louise Sweeney. From the beginning. I think Aliceâs memory was born in you.â
He came up with quite a simple explanation for her long suffering.
âYou came to a conclusion thatâs too much in my favor.â
âThatâs how everybody lives.â
âYou could be wrong about it.â
âItâs not something you can fix.â
âEven so.â
Louise was about to cry. In the past, she thought might have to go back to the original world. After years of stable living, however, the idea was almost forgotten.
âI didnât make it up for you just so you feel betterâ
He looked very serious.
âIâm the first gatekeeper to divine law.â
He was on the topic of royal authority.
âThere are many laws in this world that are described in the name of reason. And everyone is subordinate to these laws. Everyone.â
He strongly emphasized his last word.
âAnd you are also included in it.â
âWhat if I am not part of divine logic? If soâ¦â
âI want you to listen to me a little more.â
âWhat?â
He smiled kindly.
âI am the gatekeeper who stands by that logic. I will open the door wide at the mere sight of you.â
âTh-then youâre not a good gatekeeper! Thatâs bad!â
âItâs okay, Iâm only a bad guard for you.â
âGod must be unhappy.â
âYou canât make God unhappy, so he let you safely inside the door. He wants a gatekeeper as solid as a wall. â
âYouâve come to a conclusion in my favor again.â
â I favor you.â
ââ¦â
âWith all my heart.â
âThat kind of wording is weirdâ¦â
âBut you like it. I can tell by the way you smile.â
Of course she couldnât help but like it. She had someone that thought about her and loved her so much. Her heart seemed to overflow with this amazing feeling.
âRight?â
âYes.â
But it is also strange. Why would the hero of the world say this to her?
âBut from the look on your face, you must still be doubting something else.â
âH-how do you know?â
âWeâve played together for years, what do you think? So, what are you thinking about?â
He let go of her hand for a moment and began to browse through the food warehouse again. He plucked an apple from a box, rubbed it over his white shirt a few times, then broke it into two halves and offered one to Louise.
As Louise looked vacantly down at the apple, it suddenly occurred to her â she wouldnât starve anywhere with this guy.
âThank you.â
Louise took the apple with her hands.
âDo you want me to make you a pie next time?â
âItâs for survival, isnât it?â
âItâs for courtship.â
He answered while munching on the apple.
âI taught myself some recipes for courtship. A thick chocolate cake, or autumn apple pie. In winterâ¦â
He gazed at Louise. He was trying to guess what she ate in the winter.
âCinnamon rolls?â
âYes, something that warms you up like that. Itâs a must have on a snowy day.â
âItâs amazing.â
âWhat is?â
âYouâve been so sweet to meâ¦â
Louise shook his head for a moment and then corrected herself.
âItâs amazing how you love me.â
âI suppose so. The friendship period was too long.â
âNo, but to explain this feelingâ¦.â
Louis gazed down at the apple in her hand, carefully took a bite. It made a satisfying crunch on her teeth.
âWell, there is a beautiful princess and an ungainly dwarf in the forest. Itâs like the prince came and he was trying to woo the dwarf.â
âI guess the dwarf has been a lifelong ideal for the prince. If someone tried to court her the instant they first met, then I donât think thatâs any normal love.â
Louis gazed at his face, and shook her head quickly. Something must have been wrong with the analogy.
âLet me try again. Soâ¦â
Louise came up with the right story.
âThere is a good main character and a wicked older sister. One day, the prince comes to visit and begs for the sister! Even though she is a villainess who bullies the hero!â
âI guess the prince is also a villain.â
âHe canât be! Heâs the hero! The hero of a fairy tale cannot be evil!â
âWell, this isnât a fairytale, is it?â
â¦Eh? Not really. His genre was like a romance fantasy.
She became speechless, and he smiled at her. He learned one thing from her words.
âNow I know.â
â â¦?â
âWhy, sometimes, you look afraid of something.â
Ian believed he had another rival.
âIn the magic orb you saw, you saw a different future. You were always worrying because you thought you had to be prepared for it.â
Louis nodded slowly. Ian polished off the rest of his apple, then folded his arms, thinking. Perhaps he was wondering about his true partner.
â â¦Do you want to know who it is?â
âIâm very nervous.â
She supposed that was only right. If she had a destined partner, she would definitely want to know who it was tooâ¦
âItâs crazy! If you werenât with me, then who were with you with in that damn magic orb?â
âWhat? Me?â
âYeah. Iâm nervous and I donât think I should get an answer for some reasonâ¦â
He mumbled a few more words in discontent.
âItâs better to hold it to yourself just in caseâ¦because I donât think I could let it go.â
âIs it that important to know who I liked?â
Louise looked at him with a frown. With a face that looked like he would pass out, he shook his head quickly and pressed his hand near his heart.
âWell, donât tell me yet. Iâm not ready.â
He took a deep breath and said the next thing carefully.
âLet me ask you one thing. Did the person you like have a status above the nobility?â
Ian was the Crown Prince, so he was ranked above the nobility. Louise nodded in assurance, and he made a grim smile.
âThen that means he can order the death penalty.â
âTh-thatâs really viciousâ¦!â
Ian couldnât execute Ian, of course. But for some reason he was thinking of death. It was not something that the male lead in a wholesome novel would think about.
âSo I told you.â
He leaned towards her, brushing his finger against her lips and whispering.
âItâs not a fairy tale.â
â¦The original novel wasnât wholesome either.
