âGoblins! On Seelie land! On my land! Of all the gods damn nerve,â he fumed.
âPapa, calm down. Ethan and Elliott are on it.â Ellery tried to placate her grandfather but to no avail.
âCalm down? Not this time. No way.â
âThis time?â I asked. âWould someone mind explaining what is going on?â
âYou and Jojo have the same scar behind your right ears. Or had. Yours is bleeding away.â Ellery picked up my hand and gave it a squeeze.
âAnd Goblins put them there? Why?â
âOur best guess? To try and do to Ellery what was done to Rowan.â Mary patted Jones on the shoulder.
âI will kill them all,â Jones growled.
âYou need to calm down, too.â Ellery took his hand in her free one. âItâs going to be okay.â
âWhat does this thing have to do with that?â I asked, gesturing to my ear.
âEverything.â Jones sighed. âSomething drew me to that party. I didnât normally go to those things, but I had to go that night. Years later when I experienced that same pull again it took me to Sabrina.
âWe recognized each other for who we were the minute we laid eyes on each other. We came to the realization that Rowan and I had to have been intended for one another, but something muddled our minds from recognizing that. Just as Xander had trouble recognizing Elly.â
Coach Murphy coughed. âI believe my father advised you to bring Xander and his family under your protection the minute Ellery gave us enough information to positively identify him, which she did a whole year before this incident happened.â
Trey closed his eyes and exhaled sharply before speaking. âYes, William, he did and we did the best we could in that regard so that we didnât upset his life.â
âNo, instead you let Ellery be upset.â We turned at the sound of another voice.
âFitz, I donât believe you were asked to join us.â Trey shook his head at his youngest son as he came through the office door.
âNo Dad, I wasnât asked, but Iâve had enough. Can we all just please acknowledge that Ellery is Jonesâs daughter and be done with it? Besides, donât you think you ought to have someone consulting on this that has experience with supernatural and magical injuries?â Fitz came over and looked first behind my ear and then Jonesâs.
âUgh. Thatâs goblin handiwork, but not the typical scratches they use for stealing powers.â
Ellery leaned in and explained. âGoblins have very little magic of their own and thus steal some wherever they can. They used to eat their victims but Mathair Mhorâs grandfather put a stop to that.â
Jones scowled at Fitz. âHow did you figure it out?â
Fitz snorted. âGee, I donât know, maybe because Iâm not an idiot. Youâve always been extra around Elly. At first I chalked it up to the fact that sheâs the baby and only girl, but as we grew up I knew there was something else behind it.
âYou called her every night from college to tell her goodnight, Jones. Thatâs not something a big brother does. For a while I considered that you were grooming her-â
âThe fuck you say!â
Fitz ignored his brother and continued âand I was fully prepared to kill you, but then Sabrina had Quint and I saw how you were with him and I put two and two together.â Fitz shrugged. âBesides, the older she gets the more she acts like you.â
He looked pointedly at Ellery and Jones who were sitting in the exact same pose. âBut back to the issue at hand. These arenât the usual scars left behind. I agree with Jones that they have to have been placed there with deliberate intent to prevent the recognition of their Other.â
âIs that why Alexanderâs is disappearing? Because he recognized me despite the spell?â
âThat would be my best guess, yes.â Fitz settled himself on the edge of his fatherâs desk. âIt explains a lot.â
âIt explains even more than you realize. Alexander almost marked me on our first morning in the Suite.â
âHe did what?â All the men in the room jumped to their feet and Mary gasped. Ellery threw herself onto my lap and wrapped her arms around my neck.
âI said almost! He stopped himself and it was like he was coming out of a trance. Now sit down all of you before I make you sit.â
I cringed. âElly, I donât think itâs a good idea for you to be sitting in my lap right now.â
âUntil I stop sensing the desire to punch you from them Iâm staying right here.â
Fitz sat down first, then Coach Murphy, followed by Trey. Jones continued to stand, fuming.
âYou too, Jojo.â
âElderflowerâ¦â
âDonât call me that. It isnât my name and I have never liked it.â
âStop being difficult.â
âStop being an ass.â
Jones and Ellery stared at each other, neither giving an inch.
Fitz leaned towards me. âYou can tell right? Even if she hadnât told you?â he whispered. He sat back up. âLet it go Jones. They spent four months in there, if he was going to mark her it would have already happened.â
âFour months?â asked Jones.
âHoly shit!â exclaimed Coach Murphy.
âDamn, Iâm impressed,â said Mary.
âI would prefer for this to not be discussed in my presence.â Trey stood up. âMary, William, letâs go see what Ethan has discovered.â They left and Fitz hopped off the desk.
âIâll be on my way as well. Iâd like some more coffee cake.â He also made himself scarce.
Jones crossed his arms. âI would like to speak to Alexander alone.â
âI refuse your request. Not while you are still feeling the emotions youâre feeling.â
âThis isnât a game, Ellery. Itâs your life, safety, and future.â
âI have never had the luxury of getting to play games, unlike some.â Elleryâs voice was full of defiance.
âDo not take that tone of voice with me, young lady.â
âAnd what tone might that be, your highness?â
âDamn it, Elleryâ¦â Jones rubbed his forehead in defeat. âPlease just let me talk to him.â
She eased herself off of my lap, but didnât move out of my way so I could stand. âIf I feel even a twinge of fear or pain from him you wonât sleep for a week. Are we clear?â
âAnd if thereâs more than a twinge?â He pulled her into a hug and kissed her on the top of her head. He spoke into her hair. âYour threats donât scare me, my precious jewel.â She hugged him back, then stepped aside.
âI mean it, Jojo. No sleep for a week,â she admonished as left the study, shutting the door behind her.
