Coach Murphy found his voice first. âOpen these four windows.â He pointed at me. âYou, sit down.â
I did as I was told without hesitation. He moved a barely conscious Ellery into the seat with me.
âPut as much of her on you as you can manage and take her hair down.â Then he bent and took off her shoes.
Lewis could be heard muttering âMr. Sinclair is not going to like thisâ over and over again.
âI am aware,â Coach Murphy snapped at him. âSean, who made the decision to schedule this game at this date and time?â
Coach Hendrix was vibrating with fury. âI donât know, Billy, but you bet your ass Iâm going to find out.â
Ellery whimpered and clutched at my arm before sighing and relaxing against me. I worked the bobby pins out of her hair, discarding them on the floor, stroking her hair back as it loosened.
âEveryone okay?â Coach Hendrix called. The team all gave various versions of yes and then the next directive was given.
âGreat, find your phones and let your parents know that youâre all safe and that we should be back at the school within an hour. Iâm proud of all of you for how you handled yourselves during and after that game. I am sorry that you had to go through that and I promise it will never happen again.â
âWhat the hell just happened back there?â I asked no one in particular.
âWhat happened is we all almost got killed.â Nick was in the seat behind me. He lowered his voice to add, âElly is the only reason weâre not dead.â His brown eyes were filled with concern as he looked down on her.
âWhat? Seems more like the other way around.â
âTrust me. Ellery saved all of us in that gym. We just returned the favor on the way to the bus.â
âHow is she doing?â asked Matt as he cleaned his hands with a towel.
Coach Murphy prevented me from having to answer. âSheâs exhausted. That son of a bitch coach of theirs drew that game out as long as he could. Itâs a miracle that she held out as long as she did. Her dad is going to be so pissed, but so proud of her too. The best thing for her is to keep the bus cool, dark, quiet, and calm.â
He looked at me when he said calm. âCalm, do you understand? Matt, will you rub her feet?â
âSure thing, Coach.â
âYou, keep doing what youâre doing. Touch her as much as possible, but keep it PG okay? Nothing below the waist,â he whispered.
My face must have shown my shock and confusion because his face registered those in response.
âI thoughtâ¦..you donât know do you? Holy shit.â He looked down at Ellery and then back at me. âI am going to strangle Ethan. Matt, please clue him in. I canât handle it right now.â
âMe?â he asked, incredulous. âHere? Now? Over which part?â
âAny of it. All of it.â He went to sit down muttering in amazement. âHe doesnât know. She did all that without, holy shit.â
âGods damn it,â Matt muttered. âIâm not good at this.â He looked at Nick. âHelp me out, dude.â
âDo you think I know how to explain it? Iâm the oldest in my family and my parents gave me a book!â
Matt whispered âfuck,â before asking me âXander, when did you first meet Ellery?â
âMeet her or see her because thatâs two different things.â
âSee her,â Matt clarified.
âBack in September, but I donât understand why that matters.â
âHad anything significant happened around the time you first saw her?â he asked.
I stroked Elleryâs hair while I thought. âNot really. Oh, it was the day after I turned eighteen, I do remember that.â Nick and Matt both looked pained by my answer.
âUnbelievable. I know you donât have any brothers or sisters, but donât you know anyone just a bit older than you that you can talk to about stuff?â Matt asked.
âWhat type of stuff?â
âStuff stuff.â Matt lowered his voice. âShifter stuff.â
I scoffed. âYouâre as bad as my mother. Sheâs not one of us. Itâs not her.â
âGods above and all the stars,â Matt muttered. âSheâs not a Shifter, but your mate doesnât have to be one.â
âWell, sheâs not human either, and no one in my family has ever mated with anyone other than other foxes or humans.â
Nick started to say something but was cut off by Ellery.
âAlexander,â she murmured, as she turned towards me and burrowed into my chest.
âItâs okay. Iâm here, youâre safe.â
âHold me closer.â
âWhatever you want, Princess.â I shifted her in my arms and brought her further into my lap so that she could rest her cheek on my chest. I pressed a kiss to her temple. âIâm here, Iâm here,â I whispered as I stroked her hair.
âTouch me,â she begged in a ragged voice. I slid my hand to rest on her breast.
âHere?â
She answered with a groan of pleasure, and I felt more than saw Nick and Matt slam themselves across the aisle into other seats.
âOpen more windows,â one of them said in a strangled voice
âOpen all of them,â said someone else. I couldnât tell you who because everything around me faded out of focus. All I could concentrate on was Ellery. I sat there, cradling her, stroking her hair, her face, her arms and the sides of her breasts until she drifted off to sleep.
When I looked up the rest of the team was crammed into the six seats at the very back of the bus. Andy was sitting in the aisle with his head between his knees.
âKill me now, I canât take it,â he groaned.
âWhat the hell?â I demanded. Ellery whimpered and I relaxed, sliding my hand down her body in slow, gentle strokes. âSsh Princess, no oneâs going to hurt you. I wonât let anyone touch you.â
âJust you,â she whispered.
âThatâs right, just me.â
âAlexanderâ¦â
âWhat is it Ellery?â
âDonât stop.â
âI wonât, Princess, I wonât.â
