"It looks like you had a good time from all the smiling. Tell me all about it!" Charlotte pulls me to the couch and makes me sit down.
"So, what happened? Last I saw, Mr. Winters was carrying you. How do you get a man like that to carry you?" I chuckle.
"I was about to go on break and teasing Mr. Winters. Like you said, he would have too much, and I guess he did. He asked me to name my price. I thought of five thousand dollars. You know, to be outrageous, and he said deal. So, I was like, holy shit. Five thousand dollars is a lot of money. Mr. Winters told me he wasn't forcing me into doing it if I was too scared. That's what really made me want to do it more. So, I said try me."
"Next thing I know, he carried me, set me on the bed, and started getting undressed. When I tell you, he is FINE. His muscles, tattoos, and scars make him so attractive. Then, after undressing, we did it," I take a sip of coffee, recalling the moments.
"Oh my gosh! Girl, it sounds like you had an amazing night. Wasn't this your first time though?!"
"Yeah, but he doesn't need to know that."
"So you actually had sex with THE Mr. Winters?!"
"Yeah. I don't see what
"Tell me. Was Mr. Winters's slong huge as people imagine it to be?" I blush, thinking about it.
"It was!" I roll my eyes.
"I have nothing to say about his slong. I ended up falling asleep next to him because he wore me out anyways. Work was stressful. Plus, he was really comfortable, and his touch was soothing and relaxed me in every way. I woke up late next to him, sleeping. I grabbed my money and things and left. He's also pretty gorgeous when he sleeps," I hear Charlotte chuckling.
"What happened after that? I need more details!" I chuckle.
"I'm getting there. If you are patient, I'll tell you more. After that, I was going to walk, but he offered me a ride. Trust me when I say I tried to refuse, but that man has a way of getting his way. We talked on the car ride, and he found out I wore a wig. I tried my best to be unattractive. He just found it amusing. He said I was bitchy, so he bought me coffee to have a decent conversation. He finally dropped me home, and I paid for the coffee. Man, does Mr. Winters not like taking orders. He didn't want me to pay for it, like I'm not having a man pay for my shit."
"You are kinda bitchy when you don't have your coffee," I laugh.
"So are you!"
"The only man you've been with since you know who, and he is the most well-known man in the city. Not only that, but he's one of the richest men in the city. He's on the city's most popular magazine almost every morning. I'd say you have a spark with THE Mr. Winters," I look down at my cup, thinking. Although I would almost agree with Charlotte, I wouldn't say I have a spark with him, do I? Looking at my coffee reminded me of someone. Julie! I look at Charlotte, worried.
"Have you heard from Julie today?"
"No, I haven't. Are you even listening to me?" I feel my stomach squeeze.
Do you know where Julie's spare key is?" I walk to my room and dig in my dresser for it.
"No. The last time I saw it, Julie gave it to us to water her plans while she visited her son," I see Charlotte walk into the room as I dig into my dresser and find a black key.
"I found it!"
"I'm sure Julie is okay. She probably went to see her son again. What about Mr. Winters?"
"I don't give a crap about Mr. Winters right now. Something in my gut tells me this isn't right. Something's wrong. I know it."
I go out of my apartment, and Charlotte follows me. I knock on Julie's door, praying for an answer, but I don't hear anything. I unlock the apartment and go inside.
"Julie! Are you home?" I hear nothing, but the dripping of the sink.
"See, she's probably not home and visiting her son."
"No. Julie would have told us where she went," I walk into the living room and look in the kitchen.
I scream as I see Julie's lifeless body covered in blood on the kitchen floor. Charlotte rushes over to me, hugs me, and tries to cover my face to not look at it.
"Shhh, it's okay," Charlotte's words faded through me as time stood still.
"I'll go get my phone and call 911. I'll be back," Charlotte leaves as I drop to the floor, staring at her lifeless body, feeling numb.
My memory starts to flood as flashbacks come back to me. Julie's body lay there lifeless in the same way I walked in on my Dad. I look around and see footprints in the blood. Her throat slit open. I see four stab marks on her back. My body starts shaking as I feel blood drain from my face. My stomach squeezes itself, wanting to hurl. Julie was murdered? Why? Who would murder a sweet innocent old lady?
"Is everything okay? I heard screaming- Oh my- Evangeline!" I see Evan run to hug me.
"Come on, let's get you out of here," Evan helps me up and walks me into the hallway.
"How... How did this happen?" I say to Evan as a ringing noise buzzes in my ears as everything flashes by.
The next thing I knew, the police were around and questioning everyone.
"It looks like it was a murder case, Ma'am," I pull the blanket around me tighter as I hear the word murder. It hits me to the core every time I hear someone say it.
"Tell me. What happened to Julie?"
"We're only allowed to give out a little information. From what I counted, Julie was stabbed seven times and had her neck slit open. She must have put up one heck of a fight because she has cut marks to the bone on her hand. I'm really sorry for your loss."
"Stabbed seven times? From what I saw, she was only stabbed four times in the back. Where else did they stab her?"
"Do you really want to know?"
"Yes. It really means a lot to me if I know what happened to her."
"Well, as you know, Julie was stabbed four times in the back. She was also stabbed two times in the left leg and one time in the right leg. Whoever did this wanted to make sure she was dead."
"Oh. Thank you for telling me," I swallow the lump in my throat as vomit tries to make its way up my stomach.
"Are you sure there isn't anything else you're not telling me?"
"I've told you everything I know."
"Okay. Well, that's all we can do for today. Here's my cell phone number. Call me if you find anything or need to talk," The detective hands me a piece of paper with a number on it.
"Thank you, Detective Mathews. I'll sure call if I find anything."
I sit down on the floor as I watch as the corners and police officers take a bodybag out of Julie's door.
Charlotte and Evan sit down next to me. I lay my head on Charlotte's shoulder.
"It's really happening, huh? Julie's really dead. I didn't even get to say goodbye."
"None of us really did. Life takes and gives. The only thing we can do about it is keep on going," I look at Charlotte.
"The last thing she said to me was life comes in pieces like a puzzle. You have got to pick a piece to solve first before you can work the rest. I should have been there for her," Charlotte puts her arms around me.
"There's nothing we could have done to stop this. We need to do something to get our minds off of this. How about we go shopping? I know this great place, and we both have been working too hard. We deserve to get some weight off our chests."
"I don't know, Charlotte. It might be too soon."
"Oh, come on! It'll be fun. We can even invite Evan, too."
"Me? I don't think I'll have time to go. I have to get everything situated for my party tonight. I'm sorry I can't go."
"It's okay, Evan. We understand, but that doesn't mean we still can't go. Plus, we have to get a dress for his party tonight. So, what do you say?"
"What about Julie?"
"I spoke to the detective. They said they were going to call her son. Her family is going to deal with her body and bury her, so she is going to be okay. She is going to be okay. She's in a better place now. She would want you happy, not be sad about her death. She would want you to celebrate it."
"Okay. You're right. You know me too well. We do need a break and a dress. Let's do it."
"Yay!" Charlotte hugs me and kisses me on the forehead.
"Well, I better go and work on my party. Make sure Eva's well taken care of, Charlotte," Evan hugs me and walks into his apartment.
"Come on, darling. Let's go shopping."
Charlotte pulls me up and takes me into the apartment.
"Go take a nice shower and put on something cute to go shopping in," I sigh and go to the bathroom.
I strip and go into the warm water. The water beats against my skin. I lather myself down from hair to toes and rinse off. I get out of the shower, dry myself off, and wrap the towel around me.
I get out of the bathroom and walk into my bedroom. I put on lingerie with sweats and a sweater. I put my hair in a messy bun and walk into the living room.
"I'm ready," Charlotte looks at me with disgust.
"You're going to wear that?" I roll my eyes.
"Yeah. What's wrong with it?"
"Nothing. You look very... comfortable. Now, let's go."
Charlotte drags me out of the apartment and down the elevator to the main floor.
"We're walking?"
"Of course, we're walking. It's not that far. Plus, it's a beautiful day outside. Why miss the opportunity?"
"Ugh. Walking."
"You'll be fine. Fresh air is just what you need."
She drags me out of the apartment building and leads me to buildings down the block for shopping. Charlotte pulls me to the fanciest building on the block.
"Winters's Closet? This shop is not owned by Mr. Winters, is it?"
"No. Of course not. Now, in we go," Charlotte drags me inside.
"This place looks expensive as hell. Why would you bring me here wearing sweatpants? Plus, how the hell are we going to afford this place."
"Hey, I told you to wear something nice. Plus, I have my ways. We've both been working so hard, I figured we deserve this. Since your birthday is coming up, I figured this would be a part of it," I hug Charlotte.
"You're the best!"
"Yeah, I know, darling. Now, let me do my work," I look around at the expensive clothing as I hear Charlotte talk at the front desk.
"Hello there, how can I help you there?" I see Charlotte talking to a lady with fancy blonde updo hair and expensive-looking professional clothes.
"Hi, I'm here to shop," I see the lady look Charlotte up and down like a book.
"Do you have a reservation?"
"Oh, yes!" I see Charlotte dig in her purse and pull out a card.
"Here you go," I see the lady look at the card and then look in a folder.
"I don't see you in for this year. I see you have a reservation for next year for today."
"I scheduled the reservation for today. You even put it on a card for me to remember," I see Charlotte getting mad.
"Charlotte, it's okay. Let's go to another place."
"No. Go. Look around, and I'll handle this, okay? Let me work my charm," I nod and walk to the clothes.
