Chapter Twenty-Four

Week 26- The baby's skin has taken on color. The baby's lungs are starting to produce surfactant (a substance that is necessary for the function of the lungs after the baby has left the womb).

"We are not going with blue!" I huff out, annoyed with Clyde and his stereotypical brain.

"Stila! Blue is the boy color. Pink is the girl color. If we were having a girl, you'd demand for the room to be pink," Clyde argued back, dropping the blue curtain so that the bottom flowed to the ground.

It was Saturday, and we were shopping for Alden's room. We hadn't gotten farther than picking up different curtains, feeling they're textures and arguing about the color.

"Of course it would be pink! Pink is my favorite color, and I'm a conceited bitch who needs her daughter to be exactly like her," I reply, picking up a green fabric and rubbing it in between my fingers. Angrily forcing the fabric into his face, I say "What about green? Do you feel this? Do you see it? It's a perfect baby color."

"Stila, blue is perfect! If you were having a baby shower, which by the way I'm still pissed off that you aren't, everyone would be bringing blue! Blue is a baby color!" He said, nicely pushing the fabric out of my face.

"Fine, we'll go with frickin' blue! But only if you drop the baby shower arguement," I said, raising my eyebrow and willing him to disagree.

"Fine," he sighed, complying. "You're going to make my hair grey by the end of the year," he murmured, walking away with a nice sky blue curtain fabric in his hand.

Shaking my head and grinning, I walk over to look at the baby clothes section.

Deciding I could do without my usual Starbucks for a week, I pick out a cute blue newborn outfit for Alden to wear when he first leaves the hospital.

"What are you doing, Stila?" Clyde purred, coming up from behind me and sliding a hand across my stomach, his other holding a box of blue curtains.

"Picking out an outfit for the baby to go home in. I figured my Starbucks decaf tea could be forgotten for a week so that I can get it," I reply, admiring the outfit.

Sullenly, Clyde stepped back. "What makes you think you're paying for anything today?" He asks.

"The gift card you gave me for christmas, maybe?" I reply, shaking my head and giving him a duh look.

"Stila, don't be stupid. That's not what that gift cards for." He said, wrapping a hand around mine and leading me toward the cribs.

"Well, then what is it for?" I ask, allowing him to lead me.

"It's for the times I'm not with you, and you refuse to use the credit card I gave you."

"Clyde, for the last time, take the stupid card back," I said, referring to the card he had given me a few days prior. He said it was for me to buy anything I have ever wanted and more. And because I'm not a greedy gold digger, I declined. Of course he won't accept defeat.

"No, it's yours and you'll use it," he snapped, but not in an angry way. In an "I-won't-give-up" way.

"We'll discuss it later," I murmured, drawing my hand from his and walking over to a perfectly white crib. "This one."

"A white crib?" Clyde asked, coming up from behind and resting both his hands on either side of me.

"It's perfect," I say in reply, too invested in the beauty of the crib.

"I guess it's Alden's then."

Smiling, I turn around and take him into the biggest hug I could managed without my stomach getting in the way. "Thank you," I whisper.

Squeezing me, I took that as a way of him saying "you're welcome".

As we ventured on to the rest of the furniture, I picked out all white. Clyde was amused, but since Alden wouldn't live in a crib forever, I don't think he really cared that much.

When we finished with the furniture shopping, we moved on to bedding and everything else we'd need for a baby.

"Do you need one of those suction things girls use to get milk out of their boobs?" Clyde asked, seeming confused with his own definition.

Seeing the famous, rich Bachelors confusion over something as simple as a breast pump made me feel all kinds of special.

"Do you mean a breast pump, babe?" I asked, trying to contain my giggle.

"Yeah!" He said, clarity overtaking his eyes and erasing the confusion.

"Yes, we'll need one."

As we went to pick one out, along with bottles and bottle nipples, baby spoons and forks, a baby food maker, bibs, diapers, wipes, blue sheets and blankets, and many other necessary baby things, Clyde's confusion deepened until he just ended up following me, and the attendant helping us, around.

"I'm happy he's coming but I am so glad that's over," he whispered, climbing into his vehicle and stretching across the seat.

"We still have one store to get to!" I reminded him, pleased with his exhaustion.

"What?" He groaned, covering his eyes.

"Build a Bear workshop."

"You want to do that today?" He asked, his droopy eyes giving away his thoughts.

"Why? You don't want to?" I asked, my smile dropping.

"No, let's go do it! I have the rest of the weekend to spend at home, let's do this," he said, changing his mind and pulling out of the parking lot.

Smiling and shaking my head, I placed my hand on my stomach and enjoyed the busy, New York City traffic with the man I loved right next to me.

"You won the blue batlle," I whined, annoyed at Clyde.

"Exactly. The bear should get to be blue, because I won the battle," He snarkily replied.

"Clyde, it has to be a teddy bear," I say, stomping my foot like a two year old and giving him the coldest glare I could managed.

"Stila, who wants a grungy brown bear when their older when they could have a grungy blue bear?!" He sportingly pointed out, rolling his eyes at my childish behavior.

"My son will, that's who!" I replied.

"Fine! But only because I really want taco's and if we don't get out of here soon we'll miss the reservation," He muttered, grabbing the brown, unstuffed bear and bringing it to the stuffing pod.

"Take a heart and give it a big, giant kiss, Mr.!" The employee working at the stuffing pod said, directing her words to Clyde.

He looked at me desperately, and when I didn't give him a glimpse of sympathy, he kissed the heart and handed it to me.

Smiling triumphantly, I kissed it and dropped it into the half stuffed bear.

After the bear was fully stuffed, we moved on to giving him a bath.

"Stila! This is ridiculous," Clyde muttered, pressing down the button that made the airflow onto the bear in the bath tub.

"It is not," I sharply replied back.

SIghing and shaking his head, he nicely went along with the rest of the bears festivities until we were done naming him.

"Why Mr.Snuffles?" Clyde asked me, as we stood in a line to pay for the bear.

"Anytime he'll need to cry, he can just go to Mr.Snuffles and do it," I replied, looking at my nails and thinking about my own Mr.Snuffles.

"Good idea, I'm proud of you," he said, wrapping one of his hands around my shoulder until we moved up in line and paid for the bear.

"Stila, could you finish taking care of this? I have a call," he said, handing me his card and briskly walking out of the store into the busy New York City streets.

Happily paying for the bear with Clyde's gold platinum card, I walk outside and join him on the busy streets.

"Babys R Us is fucking delusional," Clyde says to me, with an annoyed look on his face. "Apparently, they can't deliver anything until tomorrow. We're never shopping there again."

"Does this mean we have to wait until next weekend in order to decorate his room?" I ask disapointedly.

"I'm sorry, baby," he says, wrapping me in a hug and kissing the top of my head.

With a sigh, we walk back to the car and begin our adventure back home. With a few shouts of angry protests, Clyde manages to park his car without any injuries to us, or to the annoying people who walk across the street when they aren't supposed to.

"Well, I'm gonna go take a nap. Go watch your girly shows," Clyde says, dumping the bear onto the living room couch.

"Watch it with me," I whined.

With a roll of his eyes and a smile on his face, Clyde complied and sat with me through half of a season of Parenthood.

"Night baby," he later whispered, running his hand over my belly. Feeling ecstatic, I fell asleep with a grin on my face and excitement for what is to come.
