It was a new week and Charlotte, Harton Clark, and William Lane went straight to the meeting room at the Research Institute.
Ezekiel Santiago made a call for a meeting in the meeting room.
When they arrived, besides Ezekiel, Turner Daniel and long-unseen Siera Santiago were also in the meeting room.
Turner Daniel sat upright while Siera Santiago looked as if she had just woken up. Ezekiel Santiago looked well, showing no signs of illness.
The main focus of the meeting was around the progress of some experiments that Charlotte Lane, Harton Clark, and William Lane were responsible for, as well as the emphasis of the future work.
At the end of the meeting, Ezekiel asked about the condition of Turner Daniel in recent days.
The latter briefly reported his situation.
Then Charlotte also gave an evaluation: âNot bad.â
These three words were already satisfactory to Ezekiel Santiago.
Turner Daniel also smiled, curving his thin lips.
The meeting ended, and one of Santiagoâs assistants came in with some files for Charlotte Lane and William Lane.
They both needed to sign off on some experimental data they were responsible for.
Harton Clark and William Lane reviewed all the data without finding any issues and signed off on them.
When they handed the files back to the assistant, William Lane said, âLooks like Assistant Qinke is busy with these trivial matters now.â
Assistant Qinke smiled warmly, âAll of it is part of my job.â
Ezekiel also said, âIâm getting old, not as energetic as before. The other assistant asked for leave to attend family matters. Peter Qinke has been working around the clock recently.ân/ô/vel/b//in dot c//om
âYou should hire another one,â Siera Santiago said weakly.
âEven if we found one, they would need to be interviewed. And I really donât feel comfortable making Peter responsible for those tasks. Letâs see how things go when it gets a little easier,â Ezekiel Santiago replied.
âOnly Peter Qinke can tolerate your eccentricities. Finding another one would be difficult,â Siera Santiago retorted.
Charlotte Lane handed the files and the pen back to Peter Qinke, then glanced at Siera Santiago.
Ezekiel Santiago: ââ¦â¦.. With so many people here, could you give me some face?â
âThere are no outsiders here anyway,â Siera Santiago said, yawning.
âYou sure act familiar,â Ezekiel Santiago huffed.
âBecause I am,â Siera Santiago pointed at Harton Clark. âThis one is my promised bridegroom number one.â
Harton Clarkâs thin lips tightened a bit, subconsciously looking towards Charlotte.
Charlotte didnât look at him, but she raised her eyebrow slightly.
Siera Santiago pointed at William Lane, âAnd he is my promised bridegroom number two.â
William Lane just laughed it off casually.
Siera Santiago continued, âOf course, frankly speaking, this idea is entirely grandfatherâs â he never got around to a formal arrangement for it.â
Ezekiel Santiago: ââ¦â¦ This girl, she leaves nothing to the imagination.â
Harton Clark let out a silent sigh of relief.
Siera Santiago then pointed at Turner Daniel, âThis is ⦠my little brother. And that one â¦â
Siera Santiago looked at Charlotte, âShe is Harton Clarkâs wife. So ⦠there are no outsiders here.â
âI didnât need you to point that out,â Ezekiel Santiago said, âMove along quickly, donât wander around in front of me, Iâm feeling irritated.â
Siera Santiago pouted. She waited for them to chat for a while more and then left the meeting room with them.
As soon as they got out of the meeting room, Siera Santiago leaned against Charlotte Lane.
Harton Clarkâs eyes fell on Siera Santiagoâs shoulder.
âWhat are you doing?â Charlotte looked at her, âAre you trying to pick a fight with me?â
âI canât beat you. The last time you hit me, it hurt for a long time,â Siera Santiago leaned even closer, âJet-lag is so hard, Iâm so sleepy.â
Turner Daniel looked at Charlotte with surprise.
âWhy did you suddenly come back?â Charlotte, out of humanitarian concern and mainly to give face to Ezekiel Santiago, let her lean on her without resisting.
âI came back to protect him,â Siera Santiago pointed at Turner Daniel, âHeâs the only heir of the Santiago family, itâs important to protect him.â
âThereâs also you,â Charlotte replied.
âMe? Iâd rather not,â Siera Santiago said, âAside from fighting, I canât do anything else.â
As she finished speaking, she seemed to remember something and squeezed Charlotte Laneâs hand. It wasnât as cold as before.
Kevin Clark was watching her the whole time. Seeing her push her luck by touching Charlotte again, he promptly pulled Charlotte aside and positioned himself between them.
With her support gone, Siera almost stumbled, but was steadied by Turner Daniel.
She looked irritably at Kevin, her courage fading as soon as their eyes met. She shuffled to one side with Turner and muttered, âWhy⦠why are you so stingy? Whatâs wrong with supporting each other? Your wife didnât even complain.â
Kevin glanced at her then, holding Charlotteâs hand, headed straight for the laboratory.
After walking a few steps, he even used a handkerchief to wipe off the part of Charlotteâs hand where Siera had touched.
Siera Santiago: â!!!!!â
Siera looked to William Lane, questioning, âIs this something a human would do?â
William Lane just smiled, refraining from offering any comment.
Turner Daniel remained silent as well. He had grown numb, who knew what heâd been through before.
â¦
Ever since Kevin Clark figured out the rules of the 319 trading spot.
One after another, the trading spots were continuously raided.
In the beginning, possibly due to overconfidence, Edward Kirsten didnât take any measures to protect the other trading spots even when many were being destroyed.
They even continued operating.
It wasnât until the losses became too heavy that they slowly started to retreat and relocate.
Therefore, by the time they arrived at some places, they would find nothing but abandoned sites.
However⦠the situation still seemed to be rather optimistic for Kevin and his team.
Edward Kirstenâs careful plans and strategies were all in vain, and he was driven to the point where he could not launch a counterattack. This was nothing short of a soul-wrenching blow for Edward Kirsten.
All things seemed to be developing in a beneficial direction.
The rest day arrived.
Charlotte spent the first half of her rest day asleep.
She didnât eat breakfast, and even lunchtime had passed.
It was Kevin who, out of fear that sheâd starve, woke her up to have lunch.
After eating, she didnât go back to sleep. She had some matters to deal with, while Kevin sat beside her, massaging her waist.
Seeing the stark contrast between the two of them after pulling an all-nighter, Charlotte finally couldnât hold back and asked, âKevin Clark, have you been secretly fortifying yourself behind my back?â
Kevin Clark: ââ¦â¦â
âOr have you been developing some kind of medication for yourself?â Charlotte asked lazily while looking at her computer, âWeâre both human, why are you so energetic?â
Kevin reflected on himself for a moment, then responded, âIâll try to keep myself in check next time.â
Charlotte Lane snorted, thinking: Like Iâd believe you.
After finishing her work, Charlotte went back to sleep, and didnât wake up until past eight oâclock in the evening.
She opened her eyes, looked at the dim room, was startled for a couple of seconds, then sat up on the bed. Kevin wasnât in the room.
She hadnât allowed herself to oversleep like this in a long time.
She used to love lingering in bed, but she didnât have the luxury of time now.
She figured that today was a day to indulge in some laziness.
She unlocked her phone and replied to a few messages, planning to go find Kevin.
Just as she was about to step on the floor, her phone rang.
It was a call from Sophie Ortiz.
Charlotte picked up, âMom, whatâs up?â
Sophie Ortiz first asked about her well-being, then posed her question, âCharlotte, are you busy with work at the institute right now?â
âItâs manageable. Whatâs going on?â
âThereâs a bit of an issue, Iâm afraid Iâm going to have to trouble you with a trip to M Continent.â Sophie said, âChloe Davis has had some issues and has been in the hospital. She woke up yesterday and todayâ¦she keeps saying she wants to see you.â
