Coffee Shop
Kevin Clark and Andrew Lane sat facing each other.
The two of them were silent for a while before Andrew spoke up, âDo you know why I wanted to talk to you?â
âI have some idea,â Kevin replied honestly.
Andrew fell silent for a moment and then continued, âKevin Clark, actually, I quite admire you as a person.â
Kevin rubbed his fingertips, waiting for him to say âbut.â
âBut⦠Although I admire you, Iâve never thought of marrying my daughter to you like my father did,â Andrew said, âYouâre too calculating, too complicated. And youâre ruthless. To be honest, Iâm not at ease.â
Kevin didnât say anything.
Andrew didnât need him to say anything either: âOf course⦠my understanding of you is relatively one-sided. Because we didnât spend much time together in the past. Back then, we would only meet once a year on Lilaâs birthday. So⦠I need time to get to know you.â
âI understand,â Kevin said.
âHowever⦠I am still willing to trust Lilaâs judgment,â Andrew said, âI always pick her up to take her home, indeed, my personal preference weighs heavier. Sometimes, I even deliberately avoid thinking about the fact that sheâs already married. I donât love her to the point of wanting to control her; I just canât accept the fact that she got married as soon as she came back.â
Kevin couldnât fully empathize with a fatherâs love for his daughter.
But he thought of Charlotte Lane when she was little â so adorable and smart.
Back then, he didnât think she was that cute. She was just clingy, making him have to hold her.
However, now thinking about that time, Kevin felt that she was really adorable.
So⦠he could understand why the Lane family was reluctant to let their daughter get married.
Anyone would be reluctant, right?
âKevin Clark, have you really thought about Lilaâs health issues?â Andrew finally mentioned the main issue of the day.
âYes,â Kevin replied, âUncle Lane, no matter what I say to you now, it would be better to show it in my actions in the future. Time will prove Little Girlâs judgment.â
Andrew smiled and said, âA personâs life is very long; with the increase of age, desires and needs will constantly change. You donât like children now and feel indifferent about having them or not, but you may think differently later on.â
Kevin stayed silent but looked frank, revealing his deep feelings for Charlotte Lane.
William Lane looked at Kevin and said, âNo one can predict the future. So⦠letâs not talk about the future, just focus on the present. Just focus on the countless possible futures that may come. You reap what you sow.â
Kevin listened to him.
âI know you really like Lila right now. What we all want to see in the future is that both of you always love each other,â Andrew said, âBut there may be unhappy times as well. If⦠that day really comes, letâs be civil about it. If Kiara and I are still alive, you can tell us, and weâll take our daughter home. If weâre not around, you can tell Roy, and heâll take her home.â
Kevinâs brow slightly furrowed.
Andrew continued, âBut if you dare to use this matter to hurt her. I wonât care if Iâm right or wrong, whether I feel guilty. Iâll take your life.â
Kevin looked at him, listened to his words, and stayed silent for a moment before speaking, âUncle Lane, although none of us knows what will happen in the future, arenât we all working towards the future we want right now?â
Andrew looked at him.
âThe future I want is to spend the rest of my life with Little Girl,â Kevin said, âYou also said that you reap what you sow. The fruit I want is a future with Little Girl in it. So⦠everything I do will be for her.â
Andrew continued to look at him.
âAll Iâm saying is a promise,â Kevin said, âIâll take action to fulfill this promise. Iâll use my whole life to prove it.â
After looking at Kevin for a long time, Andrew finally cracked a smile.
Just talking about Kevin as a person, he indeed admired him.
Especially his approach to the matter with Charlotte, as a man, Andrew truly admired it.
Even this matter made him completely change his view on Kevin.
However, as a father, he was afraid that his daughter might be wronged in her husbandâs family or that Charlotte might feel guilty towards Kevin because of this matter.
So he had to come here today, to support his daughter.
He couldnât let anyone bully his daughter because of this matter.
If in their marriage this issue is a stumbling block, then the two people can amicably separate but they shouldnât bully his daughter.
âAlright,â Andrew said, âRemember what you said today.â
âMhm.â
â¦
When Kevin returned to the Research Institute, Charlotte Lane, and William Lane were both sitting at the steps of the entrance to his Experimental Tower.
When the siblings heard footsteps, they both looked up at him.
For a moment, Kevin thought the two of them looked quite alike.
âWhy are you here?â Kevin approached and pulled Charlotte up.
Charlotte joked, âJust passing by.â
Kevin laughed, âYou came to see if Iâm still intact, huh?â
âIf thatâs how you want to think about it, sure,â Charlotte replied, relieved that he seemed alright, and said, âIâm going back to the lab.â
Kevin caught her, âYouâve been waiting for me here, arenât you going to comfort me?â
âDo you need comfort?â Charlotte looked into his eyes and asked.
Being seen through, Kevin shamelessly said, âYes, I need it.â
Rolling their eyes on the steps, William interjected, ââ¦â¦â
Charlotte glanced at William and then pulled Kevinâs collar to turn him around and stepped down another step. This conveniently blocked Williamâs line of sight. She then kissed him on the lips.
After kissing him, she turned around and left, leaving him with just a view of her back.
It was like a shameless woman who put on her clothes and didnât recognize her lover from the night before.
Kevin watched her back and laughed softly after a while.
Meanwhile, William, whose view was blocked and could only see Kevinâs back, could guess what the two were doing and clicked his tongue softly.
âAny objections?â Kevin turned to look at him.
âCan you at least show some initiative? Thatâs my sister, youâre not going to curry favor with me?â William said.
âWhat does your opinion matter?â Kevin retorted, âLittle Girl wouldnât listen to you even when she was three.â
William was rendered speechless.
âHas Little Girl mentioned anything to you?â Kevin asked.
âYes,â William stretched his legs, âShe wanted us to reduce our obstacles to you.â
âDid you?â Kevin asked.
âNo,â William replied.
âThatâs fine because I donât need it,â Kevin said, âItâs better if you guys give me a hard time. That way, Little Girl will feel more sorry for me, and then sheâll be even nicer to me.â
âDo you have no shame?â
Kevin raised an eyebrow but didnât answer.
William also fell silent for a moment before whispering, âHow come Lila has suffered so much?â
Kevinâs eyelashes trembled slightly and, after a while, he said, âShe wonât anymore in the future.â
