Ivy
The nervousness running through my veins, I was sure reflected on my face. Fearless, that's what I always chanted; but my hands were shaking, my heart running ahead of my thoughts, flipping from time to time. I had been training with Ethan, one would think I was prepared for today, but I wasn't. I wasn't ready to hurt people or to let anyone hurt me, I wasn't ready to aim my gun or dagger at anyone, I wasn't ready for what I knew quite well as the inevitable. but this is it, one of the reasons why I had decided to come here, one of the reason's why I even decided to stay. This is the fight I had always wanted, the fight I had always strived to reach and get over with.
I picked up the Scottish dirk, and the Royal blazer, Â ignoring the way they felt unfamiliar on my grip. It was a huge contrast to what I felt, when I first selected the weapons. There had been so much hate in me, so much hate that I forgot taking a life was harder than it was when watching it happen. But-- was I even ready, if it comes to worse, was I ready to pull the trigger? To aim the dagger? Was I?
I let out a deep breath, trying to calm myself, to remind myself that this was for everyone's freedom, this was the path I chose. I wasn't going to let the deaths of my parents be in vain, neither would I let Roman's predicament go unpunished. This was for everyone I love.
"Hey, you ready?"
I turned sharply to the entrance of my apartment, where I could hear several voices from the long hallway, where people who volunteered to join us, assembled.
Probably noticing the hesitance in my voice and the nervousness in my face, Ethan's brows came together. "Are you okay?" he asked, coming into the room so he could be closer to me, which I realised I appreciated and needed.
"Yeah, just a bit green"
"You're nervous." he noted.
I nodded. "Who wouldn't be? Everyone out there is believing in me and I'm in here, trying to believe in myself, trying to be ready for this. I don't even know what we're walking into, all I know is we have to walk into it to be free."
"Are you having second thoughts?"
I shook my head. "No, God no, Ethan. that's not the case at all. I just don't know if I can do this, if I'm ready to even do this."
He took my hand in his. "You can do this, Ivy. It's pretty normal to feel this way. I still feel nervous too, but I'm confident."
"Because you know you can't die?"
"Because I know we have good intentions, because I know we're the good guys, and because I believe in this. Yes, we might lose some people, but it is for a good cause, always remember that."
I sighed. "What if I mess up?"
He held my shoulder now, looking right into my eyes. "You won't mess up, okay? You would be by my side the whole time, and if someone aims a gun at you, make sure you shoot first, if its a fist, make sure you hit first... got it?"
I nodded.
"I love you, Ivy. and I trust we're going to get out of this, okay?"
I inhaled, feeling a little relieved. He was here, we were doing this together, fighting side by side, for our freedom. Freedom... "Okay, lets do this."
* * *
"Okay, just like we planned," Ethan spoke in a low tone of voice to the little crowd separated in groups. "We get them surrounded, we block all exit, eliminate anyone who gets in your way, and stop any officials coming into the 13th floor, we need it clear and safe to be able to get the item without any one standing in our way. We have just thirty minutes before the officials call in the backups from the Futures sector, got it?" Following his instructions, were nods of understanding and response here and there.
In a short while, I had learnt that there were soldiers from the Future's sector, trained to kill and eliminate anything that wasn't in favour of Glory's demands. Basically, according to Fiona, they had no hearts, therefore no emotions. They were the ideal definition of Robots, and I had no intention of meeting them anytime from soon.
"Remember, we're doing this for everyone we've lost on the way, everyone who already died for this same cause, everyone we left behind... We're doing this for our freedom." Ethan passed across, his words installing a new found hope into me.
From the looks on everyone's faces, I was guessing it gave them the same feeling.
"Lets do this." Immediately those words left Ethan's mouth, everyone scattered, going to take on their positions around the facility.
"Hey," Edith called, gaining my attention and Ethan's. "I'll lead the east wing team, and let you in on what's happening-"
"No," Ethan caught her off immediately she finished talking. "You're coming with me, Ivy and Ralph."
"But you guys are totally enough to take the Core... last I heard, the 13th floor is usually empty, so you guys are kinda taking the easiest part of the mission."
No, we weren't, we were going right into the lion's den, we didn't know what we were to expect, and I believed that was the most dangerous part to any mission. Going blindly to a place no one was meant to be in.
"I need to know you're safe, that's why I want you closer to me." Ethan clarified.
She glared. "Ugh! you keep treating me like I'm some 16 year old brat who can't hold on in a fight, when we both know I'm almost as good as you," Then her gaze swept towards Ralph's "Ralph, help me out here!"
I looked over at Ralph who had been surprisingly quiet and a little on edge. I had made a mental note to ask him if he was okay, after handing the Core to Dean.
Ethan sighed. "Fine, just--watch your back, okay?"
"Of course! This isn't my first rodeo, yeesh. see ya soon." She said, running off towards the eastern wing where the team had headed to earlier.
Ethan turned towards me and Ralph. "Come on, we have just a few minutes."
With that, we made made our way carefully to a secluded spot in the Facilities entrance, waiting for the signal from Roman.
My heart was hammering against my chest, any second now, we were going to hear the bomb go off, and that would alert the Inc officials of the breach, it would take exactly thirty minutes till the Robot soldiers got here.
You've got this, Ivy, you've got this.
Almost time now... soon we'll be free...
Anytime now... anytim-
BOOM!
The sounds of alarms going off, the sudden red lights taking charge of the whole building, the yells, the sound of gunshots and the smell of fear filled the air in an instant. I didn't even realise I had began running with Ethan and Ralph. My feet were meeting the ground harshly as I ran passed the chaos, my eyes and ears finding it very difficult to adjust to the flickering red lights and the blaring of the alarms.
It was all happening so fast, so fast for me to comprehend the fact that some men had noticed our presence and were already aiming for the kill. The sounds of gunshots and weapons attacking was all around us. The facility was in utter chaos and we had just thirty minutes to get the hell out.
It wasn't until a bullet flew past my ear, did I jump out of my very dangerous daze, catching on to the official charging towards me. I attacked, without my weapon. I was too busy holding him off to notice how Ethan and Ralph tackled the other men fighting us. It was a blur of fist hitting face, weapons working mercilessly and pains on body parts you never expected would hurt even when punched.
We managed to fight our way through the crowd, due to the help of the others who had came to fight with us.
"Go!" I could clearly recognise that voice as Caramels'. "We've got this, get the Core!"
She didn't have to tell us twice before we ran off towards the elevator, getting it open and going up to the 13th floor.
Almost like time had quickened itself, the elevator was sliding apart, and we were out before it even reached its end on either side.
I almost doubled over at what I saw.
Full Robots, taken the shapes and structures of the human body. No skin on sight, just iron. They stood right in front of a door, the one I supposed, contained the Core. Their robotic heads turned to our direction at the same time, before their bodies moved, their head not moving an inch.
My heart almost dropped.
"What in the Netflix shit is this? How the hell are we gonna fight these-- these things." I asked, unable to hide the fear in my voice.
"Glory must have asked for extra security on this floor, one she knew we had no idea on how to stop." Ethan let out.
"Since we can't stop them, we can distract them." Ralph said for the first time.
"What's the plan?" Ethan asked.
"So obviously, Glory knew we were coming, and she knew you would most likely be on this floor. she wouldn't put up anything that would endanger your safety. My biggest bet is that she had placed a kill on sight order for anyone who isn't you. That way, you can stay back and distract them, while Ivy and I head over to get the chip."
No, I didn't like the plan. "No-"
"Lets do that." Ethan cut me off before I could even protest, his gaze meeting mine. "We don't have much time, Ivy. If we don't take the chance, more of these thing are gonna come, and no one is gonna like the outcome. We have to hurry."
As much as I would have loved to stay back and talk about the reasons why he should come with us, I couldn't deny the fact that he was right. "Okay." I said into the short silence that followed.
Ethan reloaded both his guns. "Okay."
Then he fired at the Robots, gaining their fun attention as they charged over to him, probably sensing the weapons as a major threat.
Ralph and I made our way towards the door, and gently, I pushed it open, just in case there was another unwanted surprise waiting for us.
Luckily there wasn't. The large room was empty, the only thing to be seen was, The Core.
Placed safely on a high metallic altar, it was a boxed shaped glowing blue beauty, synonymous to Ethan's eyes whenever they changed color. It was the only thing that stood out in the surroundings, and I found myself going over there and climbing up to the altar, my heart jumping with fear and excitement.
This little thing right here, was the key to our freedom, it was all we needed to be out of here. After this, we would all be free, Glory would be stopped, and we would be putting an end to any possible damage she had been hoping to bring into earth in future.
"Ralph, what am I gonna do? Just take it off?" I asked, my eyes still on the Core, almost like it would have disappeared if I looked away from it. "Ralph?" I called out when I didn't get a response.
The sound of a gun leaving its safety reached my ears.
A sickening feeling settled within me as my gaze finally left the alluring presence of the Core, over to the direction I had left Ralph standing.
His gun was pointed straight at me, guilt in his eyes, but his grip on the gun was firm and steady as he spoke. "I'm sorry Fisher, but I can't let you take that Core."
