He held the doorknob, turned it and gently pushed the door open. Then she saw Jessica sitting on the bed sobbing softly.
Dolores walked in and closed the door. Hearing the noise, Jessica hurriedly wiped her face. âWhy arenât you watching the children, what are you doing here?â
âI came to check on you.â Dolores reached out to hug her. âMom, letâs forget what happened in the past, okay?â
Leaning her face on Jessicaâs shoulder, she added, âIâll support you when youâre old. When Iâm old, Iâll ask Samuel to support meâ¦â
âWhat are you talking about?â Jessica patted her daughter on the back. âYouâre still young. I think Doctor Herbert is a good choice, no doubt.â
Dolores scratched her hair. She was always afraid Jessica would say that. âLolaâ¦â
âMom.â
Dolores knew what Jessica was going to say. In fact, she had intended to accept Sampson, but now it seemed impossible to her.
If she investigated the truth of her car accident in the past, she could never be with Sampson.
âMom, Sampsonâs mother came to see me a while ago.â
âWhat?â Jessica was quite surprised. Holding her daughterâs shoulders and looking down at her, she asked, âWhat did she come to you for?â
Dolores pursed her lips, wondering how to get her mother to dispel her thoughts. Then she said truthfully, âIt was six years ago. He saw Sampson and me together, so he mistook that we were in love. Later he deliberately came to see me and told me that I was not suitable for his son. He said that based on his background, he should find someone who could fit him in terms of identity and background.â
Jessicaâs lips parted, but she couldnât utter a word for a long time.
Finally, tears again fell from her eyes.
âMom, why are you crying again?â Dolores reached out to wipe away her tears.
She tried with all her might to divert her motherâs attention.
Why did she start crying again?
âHow could I not be upset?â At the thought of Sampsonâs mother turning to Dolores and humiliating her, Jessica felt depressed. âIf it wasnât for me in the past, youâ¦â
âMom, shall we stop talking about things that happened in the past?â Dolores knew what was bothering Jessica. She explained to her mother patiently, âI donât like Sampson. Even if I married him, I wouldnât be happy. Momâ¦â
Dolores took her hand. âYou want me to be happy, donât you?â
âOf course.â Jessica wished her daughter to be happy even in her dreams.
Dolores was still very young. Jessica prayed that there would be a good man who would love her.
âDo you believe me?â asked Dolores again.
âYes, I believe you.â Jessica looked at her daughter. âYou are the one I love most in my heart.â
She watched as her daughter struggled little by little to her present state, for which her daughter struggled and suffered. Now Dolores finally had her own career.
In Jessicaâs heart, her daughter was the most capable woman.
âIf you believe me, please donât worry about my marriage. Things will work out in time.â Dolores took the opportunity to convince Jessica.
She didnât want her mother to keep worrying about her marriage and nagging all day.
She was under pressure and so was Jessica.
Dolores didnât want Jessica to blame herself, since her mother always thought that whatever happened to them was her fault.
âMom, look. Iâm only 24 years old. Iâm still very young and I have a long way to go. Maybe I can meet a man who doesnât mind that Iâm a single mother and is willing to take care of Samuel and Simona with me.â
Jessica wasnât sure. âAre you sure youâll meet such a man?â Who could predict what would happen in the future, anyway?
âProbably. If you kept insisting on it, Iâd feel stressed. I canât just find someone randomly. The man I will marry must be able to accept Samuel and Simona. If not, I wouldnât consider him.â Dolores always wanted to make it clear to Jessica what was on her mind today.
Jessica knew how important those two children were to Dolores. Back then, she was even willing to give up her own life to stay with the children, so Jessica could understand their importance to her.
âAll right, I wonât insist any more in the future. If destiny came, your Lord Right would naturally appear.â Jessica stroked her daughterâs hair. âI wonât push you.â
Through Sampsonâs case, she also realized something.
With Doloresâs status, even if there was a man she liked, her family might be a great hardship to conquer.
Who would be willing to let her son marry a single mother of two?
She could understand why Sampsonâs mother would disagree. Naturally, men from that kind of family would surely find someone compatible to marry.
But, Jessica still felt sad for her innocent daughter.
Hearing Jessicaâs promise, Dolores breathed much easier. She had felt so stressed when Jessica kept harping on her marriage all day long. She had even lost the courage to chat with her mother, fearing that Jessica would bring up the subject.
Now everything was settled.
Just then, the doorbell rang. Dolores got up. âIt might be the pizza delivery guy.â
She left Jessicaâs room and opened the door. It was, indeed, the delivery man in a yellow uniform.
âHello, maâam. Takeout delivery for Dolores Flores.â
âYes. Thank you.â
âPlease sign here.â
Dolores signed her name on the receipt form and tipped the delivery man. She carried two pizza boxes into the house and set them on the dining room table. âSamuel, Simona, go ask Grandma to come over for dinner. Iâll pour the milk for you.â
âOkay.â Samuel replied, taking his sisterâs hand. They walked together towards Jessicaâs room.
Dolores turned and looked at her son, smiling.
Jessica was pretty down today. If Dolores went to see her, she feared her mother would not come out. Hence she asked the two children to call her instead Jessica would not turn her grandchildren away.
Dolores poured the milk and set the glasses on the dining room table. She also prepared the plates for them to eat.
Then she opened the pizza boxes.
Samuel and Simona came out with Jessica, holding her hand on either side.
Dolores pulled the chairs closer for them. She knew Jessica would surely come out for dinner whenever the two children called her.
âSimona, weâre having pizza today. I didnât cook,â Dolores explained.
Jessica glanced at the table and saw two huge pizzas, which should be enough for them. âOur Simona is really a food lover,â she teased her granddaughter.
Simona wondered if that was a compliment or a complaint. Blinking, she asked, âWhatâs a food lover?â
âIt means you have good taste in food, youâre good at eating, and you donât know how to do anything else but eat,â Samuel explained.
Simona blinked. âSo itâs a compliment, is it?â.
âYes.â
Throwing a glance at his sister, Samuel let out a secret sigh.
This girl always expected to be complimented by others.
âWow,â Simona exclaimed enthusiastically. âSo, Samuel is a big foodie. He doesnât know how to do anything but eat.â
Samuel was speechless.
Jessica was amused by the two children, and the depression in her heart disappeared.
âGrandma said youâre a foodie.â Samuel put a slice of durian-flavored pizza on his sisterâs plate.
âI know. Youâre a food lover too. Iâm praising you.â Simona took the pizza her brother had passed her and took a bite. She commented contentedly, âYummy!â.
Samuel looked at his sister helplessly. He asked Dolores, âMom, who did Simona get it from?â
The room was silent for a few seconds.
âI am your mother. Of course I get it from me.â Dolores put a glass of milk in front of her son. âDonât talk while you eat.â Samuel pursed his lips.
After dinner, Dolores cleared the dining room table. Simona asked Jessica to take her out for a walk. Sneaking into the kitchen, Samuel grabbed Doloresâ legs and acted like a baby, âMommy, could I have the tablet and the watch, please?â
âTell me, have you done something wrong?â Dolores looked at her son.
Samuel was disappointed. âForget it if you donât want to.â
It was impossible for him to give up the idea of taking revenge on that man who cheated on his mother.
Besides, he had just humiliated that man, which was nothing compared to his having abandoned them.
They were still suffering a loss.
Releasing Dolores, Samuel trotted back to his room.
Dolores wondered where Samuel got his temper from.
She let out a sigh, set the glass down in her hands and wiped her hands dry. She wanted to have a conversation with Samuel. The knot about Matthew in her heart was too tight.
Dolores felt a little uncomfortable about it.
When she reached her sonâs bedroom door, her phone in her pocket suddenly rang. She pulled it out and saw the caller ID. She inhaled deeply.
