Marina didnât expect Dolores to come for a visit. She continued to be nice to Dolores considering Doloresâ relationship with Matthew.
âDid you come alone?â asked Marina.
âYes,â Dolores replied quietly.
âWho cameâ¦?â asked Jeffrey as he walked out of the study room. Then he stopped when he saw Dolores.
Jeffrey looked worried. He hadnât expected Dolores to come for a visit either. He looked behind Dolores and was a little disappointed not to see Matthew.
âWhat are you coming here for?â asked Jeffrey in an indifferent tone.
Dolores stood still and stared at Jeffrey.
Jeffrey related to Dolores in many ways. She should feel happy and nervous to learn of their relationship.
However, Dolores felt only pity.
Jeffrey became nervous at being stared at for too long. He looked away and asked Dolores, âWhy are you staring at me like that?â.
Dolores continued to stare at Jeffrey. She spoke slowly and softly, âCan I talk to you for a second?â.
Jeffrey looked angry, âDid he ask you to come over here?â.
Jeffrey thought Matthew had asked Dolores to be the go-between to reconcile their relationship.
Jeffrey was pleased at first.
âNo, he doesnât know Iâm here.â
Jeffrey frowned and made a disgruntled face, âThen I have nothing to say to him.â
âAre we enemies now, canât we talk?â Dolores was initially calm, but she became triggered after hearing what Jeffrey said. It wasnât Jeffreyâs words that hurt her. It was the complicated relationship between them that made Dolores feel weak and drained.
Jeffrey pouted and remained silent.
Marina smiled and tried to mediate between Dolores and Jeffrey. She tugged at Jeffreyâs sleeves, âSheâs not a stranger. She may have something important to talk to you about. Donât think of her as an enemy.â
Jeffrey seemed less sulky after hearing what Marina said. Marina led Jeffrey into the study room, then turned and looked at Dolores, âYou should come in too.â
Marina sat Jeffrey in his chair and lowered her voice, âThink about Matthew. Do you really want to unlink your sisterâs only son? I know you donât want to. So, keep your long face away. If there are consequences, youâll be the one whoâs miserable.â
Marina knew her husband well. So what she said was bound to hit his weak spots.
Jeffrey finally calmed down. He looked at Marina and said, âPlease leave us alone.â Jeffrey was curious as to why Dolores had come to him today as well.
Marina patted Jeffreyâs shoulder and then smiled at Dolores: âWould you like something to drink?â.
Dolores shook her head, âIâm fine.â
âThen sit down,â Marina got a chair for Dolores.
Dolores thanked Marina and sat down. A long tea table stood between Dolores and Jeffrey. Marina left the study and closed the door.
âNow, why did you come here today?â Jeffrey took the first step.
Dolores pouted and then looked at Jeffrey earnestly, âWe are not enemies. Not now. Never.â
Jeffrey was stunned when his eyes met Doloresâ. He felt uneasy.
âI came here today looking for an answer. I expect you to tell me the truth,â Dolores looked nervous, scared and curious.
Dolores feared that Jeffrey was connected to Victoriaâs death.
But Dolores had to face the truth, regardless of whether it was good or bad.
Dolores had no choice. Her voice trembled, âDid you kill Victoria?â
Jeffrey looked at Dolores silently. He narrowed his eyes, âIs this what you want to ask?â.
Dolores nodded her head and answered in an affirmative tone, âYes.â
â¦
After a while, Jeffrey said, âYes.â
Dolores only realized she was vulnerable after hearing Jeffreyâs answer. She quickly lowered her head to cover the pain in her heart to know the truth.
Dolores bit her lips and tried to control herself from crying.
Dolores had already expected the worst case scenario.
However, she realized that she couldnât take much when the truth came out.
Dolores didnât know how to face Matthew and Victoria, who had passed away. She didnât know what expression or emotion she should show in front of them.
âI thought Matthew and I were meant to be together. But now I know we werenât. It was karma,â and Doloresâ relatives were the cause of the tragedy.
Her mother and uncle.
Dolores slowly raised her head and stared at Jeffrey. She did her best to control the tremors. It was hard to breathe. Dolores gripped the handle of the chair and the veins showed on the back of her hands. She held back and laughed quietly. It was a pitiful image, âIf I had a choice, I wouldnât want to be related to the Harris Family in any way.â
Dolores paused, âand we wonât be in the future.â
âWhatâ¦what do you mean, what relationship do you have with the Harris Family?â Jeffrey sounded nervous.
Dolores pulled out the letter. Before passing it to Jeffrey, she said in an official tone, âI havenât read the letter and didnât know what was in it. But, I wanted nothing to do with you, regardless of the contents of the letter.â Dolores then placed the letter on the desk.
âI didnât want to meet you at all. This will be our last meeting.â
Next, Dolores left the study room. Marina was preparing dinner. She wanted Dolores to stay for dinner with them. Then, she would ask Matthew to come over, so they could try to get along better with each other.
âCall Matthew and ask him to come to dinner,â Marina said amicably.
Dolores didnât respond. She walked to the entrance without emotion, like a puppet. All Dolores wanted was to get out of the Harris mansion as quickly as possible.
When Dolores reached the entrance, Sean returned. He quickly approached Dolores, âWhy are you here alone?â
Doloresâ vision blurred as Sean approached her. Then, her vision dimmed and she almost fell over.
Sean quickly rushed toward Dolores when he saw her almost fall. Then, he caught her before she hit the ground.
It was exhausting. Dolores slowly raised her head. She saw the person who caught her before she fell. Her vision was still blurry. Dolores asked in a thick voice, âWhy did you come back?â
âIâm worried about you, did my father do something to you?â Sean was enraged. He looked like he was going to fight Jeffrey at any moment.
Dolores tugged at Seanâs shirt. He shook his head and said, âNo.â It was as if the encounter a moment ago pulled all of Doloresâ strength out of her body. Her legs went weak.
Dolores tried to get up with what strength she had left, âCan you do me a favor?â.
âSure,â Sean could see that Dolores was weak. He was worried, âDo you need to go to the hospital?â
Dolores shook her head, âJust get me in the car.â
Dolores needed to rest and get her energy back. She couldnât go home looking like this.
Matthew would find out she was hiding something.
Sean canât bear to see Dolores like this. He carried her in his arms and headed for his car.
Doloresâ bodyguard opened the car door. Then, Sean put Dolores into the car.
Sean also got into the car after Dolores. He was worried.
Dolores closed her eyes and rested her forehead on her hand. At the same time, she rubbed her temples with her hand and tried to stay awake. Then, she said to the bodyguard, âGive me a bottle of water.â
They always kept bottles of water in the car. The bodyguard quickly handed the bottle of mineral water to Dolores. She opened the cap and gulped some water down her throat. After a while, Dolores felt better. The dryness and bitterness in her mouth had disappeared. Dolores looked at Sean, âNow I have to go home.â
âMy father didnât have a fight with you? Really?â not that Sean didnât believe in Dolores, but Dolores didnât look good after leaving the Harris mansion. He had to expect the worst.
Dolores shook her head and said, âItâs getting late. I should go home now.â
Sean had no choice but to get out of the car, as Dolores had put it that way. He couldnât follow Dolores to the villa. He didnât think he knew how to confront Matthew.
Sean got out of the car and closed the door for Dolores.
âCome on,â Dolores said calmly.
It took a while for the car to reach the villa. Dolores didnât get out of the car immediately, but patted her face to compose herself. Dolores only opened the car door when she felt she was ready to face the people. As Dolores got out of the car, she saw two other cars pull up in the yard.
