Matthew alone scared her, but she wanted to get close to him.
Eddie patted her hand, âDonât worry. Iâm your backup with me close by.â
âDad, do you really want me to marry him?â she asked.
She, too, was a person of pride and self-respect. It was obvious that Matthew was not attracted to her. She would only get him to dislike her even more if she forced him to marry her.
Eddie didnât explain his thoughts in a rushed manner, but rather discussed the pros and cons with her.
âWhy did the Nelson Family and the Harris Family ally for marriage in the first place?â he didnât want her to answer since he didnât know what had gone before, âIt was just a family alliance when Jolene Harris married Jayden Nelson. One reigned in officialdom while the other dominated in the business field.
What would the situation be if those two people formed their family?â
He thought for a moment, âRoyal power.â
Those two families would join forces and help each other. That would only make their own position stable.
âWhich family has been able to outshine the two families over the years? Look what happened to the Herbert Family â what happened to them in the end? They used to be a well-known family too.â
He snorted, âIn three sons, two of them had given in to Jeffery.â
He looked at his daughter, âOnly if we join this stronghold, then we can stay in this aspect of the field for a long time.â
She understood the reasoning behind this and also wanted to help her father.
Itâs just that â¦
She was afraid to face Matthew.
âYou donât have to worry about anything. Iâll pave the way for you.â He reassured her, âMy child, you are not a timid and fearful person. Bring out your usual strength.â
Her eyes seemed to hide some shyness, âHe is the most charming man I have ever met. I want to be his wifeâ¦â
And be loved by him.
âThat will be enough.â
She caressed his face and her eyes seemed to look at someone else in a trance, âIf you want something, you have to work hard to get it, otherwise youâll only regret it.â
She looked at her father and was a little surprised, âDid Dad have any regrets when you were young?â
He was usually very stiff as he was someone who had spent half his life in the military after all. He seemed powerful and mighty, even if he wasnât angry.
She had never seen such a soft side to her father.
She regained her sanity, withdrew her hand and returned to her usual appearance. âIt wonât be perfect, as one lives a lifetime.â
She took his arm, âYouâre so sentimental. Did you have someone you liked when you were young?â
Eddie and his mother went on a blind date. Because his mother was gentle and dutiful to him, they considered her a virtuous wife. However, there was no affection.
This was something she also knew.
Her mother had told her earlier that he loved one person.
Was she thinking of that person in her mind as she suddenly became so sentimental?
âYou are a child. Donât meddle in the affairs of adults.â
âDadâ¦,â she wanted to ask still.
He interrupted her, âStay honestly at home during this time.â
I didnât want any strange business to happen during this period.
She nodded.
Who knew what Matthew would do if he was desperate.
At the police station, Dolores was locked in a room and was being interrogated.
In a room with no windows on all four walls, a white chandelier was illuminated and two interrogating officers were seated in front of a rectangular table.
âWhat is your name?â
She was handcuffed and sat in a chair.
She repressed the fear in her mind and looked calmly at the interrogating officers.
âDolores.â
âWell, from now on, every word you say will be used as evidence in court.â
âWhy did you kill Sampson Herbert?â
She clenched her hands, âI didnât.â
âSomeone saw you point a gun at him. The evidence is conclusive. Do you still want to deny it?â
âI didnât kill him.â
She could not explain the situation since the gun was in her hand at the time. Sampson died because he was shot. She had no way to explain it.
âYou have to think it through clearly. If you give an honest explanation, you can still get a lenient punishment. However, if you insist, it would be useless for you to keep denying when the evidence comes out with only your fingerprints on the gun.â
She looked at the general officer who was taking down the records, âYou set this whole thing up, why do you have to pretend to take the records?â
That officer looked at her, âI donât know what youâre talking about. Iâm just following procedure, since we have to do searches with every suspect.â He accentuated the pronunciation of the word âsuspectâ.
This word pierced his eardrum and his mind clouded. His eyes were dazzled, but he struggled to keep his eyes open and remain calm.
âI was only defending myself! I didnât kill him.â
âIf you didnât kill him, why did you hold the gun and point it at him?â
âI already told you, I was just defending myself and I didnât kill him!â
âAs far as we know, Sampson was convicted of a kidnapping case and the one he kidnapped was you, is that correct?â Thatâs right.
âYes.â
âCould it be that you hold a grudge against him since he kidnapped you and thatâs why you killed him?â
She leaned over as she felt pain in her chest. A sickening feeling of nausea came over her and she felt like vomiting. She closed her eyes and looked extremely uncomfortable, âNo.â
