Chapter 396: Chapter 396

Jeffery Harris tried to convince Matthew Nelson: “Would it hurt you?

I’ve made my position clear.”

He narrowed his eyes and stared at Jeffery. His pupils instantly glowed with a dangerous light.

“I don’t need anyone touching the people around me in the name of doing me some good. And neither do you.”

“Are you really obsessed?” Jeffery clenched his fists, making a crackling sound as he squeezed too hard.

Matthew looked at him deeply, “I’ve always respected you and now it remains the same. If you let my wife go, I can ignore the past, but if you insist, don’t blame me for turning my back on you.”

Jeffery opened his eyes in disbelief with his hands over his heart, “You, can you leave me for a woman?”

“She’s my wife.” He said word for word.

“She’s your wife, but she doesn’t agree with you!” Jeffery shouted, “Wake up, don’t be delusional!”

“I’m incredibly awake for what I’m doing right now!” his handsome face was full of stiffness.

He turned and walked away.

Jeffery looked at her determined back and shook himself, “You can’t save her. All the evidence will point to her.”

She stopped her movement. Jeffery thought it was timely and said, “If you promise to divorce, you won’t lose anything. Chloe is not inferior to her and her family background suits you better. I’m doing it for your sake. Even if you hate me, I can’t see how you mistake yourself for a woman and don’t know right from wrong.”

Matthew turned slowly and looked at Jeffery silently, saying nothing.

Jeffery froze for a moment, “Matthew…”

He averted his gaze, walked briskly and opened the door to get into the car.

Jeffery took two steps back and slumped into a chair.

His gaze was now clearly…he gripped the armrest tightly.

Eddie patted his shoulder, “You scared, old friend?”

Jeffery turned his head and looked at him, “I’m afraid you’re getting desperate…”

“Afraid he’ll stand up to you?” continued Eddie.

He was silent as if he was acquiescing.

He was trying to force Matthew to give up Dolores Flores, but he did not want to antagonize him.

This was not his original intention.

Eddie consoled himself, “If he really cared about the woman, he would definitely give in.”

He calmed down himself. In fact, Matthew did not develop his strength during these years because Jeffery owned the power.

Boyce Shawn was able to get by smoothly in the business field because of his connections.

Even if Matthew had the means, he could not save her.

“I’m with you, what are you afraid of?” he confided.

The Harris Family, the Chambers Family and the Herbert Family were the three most important families in B-town. It would be easy for them to convict a woman if they joined forces.

Whoever killed a person had to pay with his life.

No matter how strong and resourceful Matthew was, he would be powerless in the face of the evidence.

Chloe sat off to the side, looking out at the empty courtyard and seemed to be lost in thought.

She had an interest in Matthew, especially when he had just faced a power stronger than himself, he could still remain impassive.

Even if he was passive, he showed no shyness, but rather displayed the stiffness of the man and remained calm when confronted with the situation.

He was dazzling, as he possessed everything a woman desired.

She also knew that she would not receive the deep love he felt for Dolores even if Matthew agreed.

“Papa.” She looked at him, “This business…”

“What are you afraid of with me and Jeffery around?” He interrupted her.

“But…”

“We should go back now.” He interrupted his daughter once more.

He was afraid she would say something that would make Jeffery flinch.

Jeffery’s mood was now fluctuating and he sat in the chair motionless, “I won’t be accompanying you.”

Eddie was in uniform. Although he was in his late fifties, he was still fit, as he and Jeffery had been in the military most of their lives.

“Get a good rest. This is not like you. When you were young, who were you afraid of? How come you’re getting more and more timid?”

He sighed, for he was not shy, but he was afraid of losing.

“He’s Jolene Harris’ only son…” He hesitated and stopped saying.

Eddie’s look changed, soon becoming calm, he put his hand on her shoulder tightly and grabbed her, “Call me anytime.”

After he finished saying, he walked out of his house and Chloe followed behind him.

The aide opened the door for her, then bent down and got in. She got into the car as well and closed the door.

“Drive.” He instructed her.

Soon the car started.

“Dad, why did you interrupt me just now?” she asked.

He had interrupted her twice on purpose, obviously, since he didn’t want her to talk.

He leaned back in his seat with his eyes closed, “What did you mean, did you mean you’re not getting married?”

She lowered her head, “You seem to have a great affection for your wife. He won’t love me if you force him to give in.”

“Affection can be cultivated.” He opened his eyes to look at his daughter, “Are you afraid of this?”

“I…” She wasn’t sure.

There had been quite a few types of men around her, none of them were the ones she wanted to get close to, but it scared her.
