Armand was speechless.
He lowered his head, and made a sorry face, Dolores didnât sympathize, but her voice softened a lot, âYou should work, Grandma needs your care too, and Theresa you can leave her to me, when she has recovered, I will naturally tell you where she is, in the time while she gets better, you must not disturb her, can you promise me that?â
Then Armand asked hoarsely, âIs that what you want?â
Dolores sighed, did she have to say it?
If Theresa wanted to see him, how could she keep him?
The fact that he was being held by the nurses should be answer enough.
Armand didnât look up and then said, âGot it.â
He turned and left.
Matthew was worried that this guy wasnât taking it well, âCall me.â
Dolores nodded and said, âOkay.â
Matthew followed Armand, only then did Dolores have time to talk to the nurse, âDid he hurt you?â.
The nurse gestured to him and said, âNo, Iâve seen a lot of distressed family members, I know what to do.â
Dolores asked, âIs his condition stable?â.
âShe has passed the most dangerous period, she no longer needs to stay in the ICU.â
âI want to take her to be treated abroad these days, can she stay in the ICU these two days?â Dolores was afraid that Armand would come again.
The nurse said, âSure, as long as he pays, he can stay as long as he wants.â
A day in the ICU cost over ten thousand dollars, many families could not afford that, ten thousand was a huge amount for many families, some could not even have that much.
Dolores asked, âCan I go see her?â
âYes.â Replied the nurse.
The nurse opened the door, but she still had to change clothes as inside was a sterile area, so now that Theresa had survived the most dangerous moment, she still had to change clothes to get inside.
Having changed once, Dolores was used to it by now, she finished quickly.
Theresa was lying down, though she was past the danger, but still unable to move.
Dolores approached her and lowered her head to look at her, as her head was wrapped in gauze, she could not make out her feelings, she thought that since Armand had arrived she had made a drama. She could not be calm.
He asked quietly, âAre you in pain anywhere?â
Theresa said, âNo, but I want to leave as soon as possible.â
âI know, Iâve already fixed it, just these days.â Dolores comforted her, âDonât worry, Armand wonât come again.â
Theresa was a little calmer, âI really donât want to see him.â Dolores said it clearly.
If it were her, she wouldnât want to see him either.
The ICU was different from normal wards, there were no chairs inside.
Theresa didnât know what time it was, the ICU was pretty well sealed, the lights were constantly on, if no one looked at the clock, there was no way to tell the time.
She asked, âWhat time is it?â
Dolores checked and said, âItâs nighttime, almost 12 am.â
âYou should go home and get some rest.â Theresa said apologetically.
It was already very late and they still called her.
Dolores smiled, to comfort her, she said, âI was at the store with a client, if I come back I might not even sleep, I need to draw some drafts.â
âI can stay with you for a while, so I can look at the drawings I want to do.â Theresa knew it in her heart, she didnât say anything, but she remembered.
Dolores was there with her for a while, Theresa fell asleep, only then Dolores left.
After she walked out the hospital door, she pulled out her phone to call Matthew.
At that moment, Matthew had just parked his car on the AC bridge, he was leaning on the railing, hands buried in his pockets looking out at the river.
Armand and Boyce were sitting on the steps.
âYou need to give her time to digest it, to accept it, she doesnât want to see you now, so donât go and upset her, give her some space, and at the same time you can calm down a bit, you need to straighten out your relationship.â Boyce was talking some sense into him.
Armand didnât speak, just listened quietly, said nothing, occasionally taking a sip of his drink.
There were a lot of cans on the stairs.
Boyce was furious, he was talking for a long time, his throat was sore, but he didnât say a word.
âArmand, what do you want to do?â Boyce shouted, he took the can in his hands, âDo you regret it?â
âYes, I regret it!â Suddenly, Armand stood up, he felt upset inside, and kicked the cans on the floor, he looked at the surprised Boyce, âDo you know I was pregnant? Of my child, I didnât even know it, I saw all that blood, I thought⦠I thought I was hurt, I saw with my own eyes how I gave up on livingâ¦â
Armand put his hands on his chest, âHereâ¦â He clenched his fist and pounded on his chest, âHere, it hurts so much.â
Boyce could see that it hurt, but he couldnât put himself in his place.
He suddenly knew that everything he had just said was useless.
He was sad, and he was sorry, this wasnât something a few words of comfort could help with.
âI know youâre hurting, Iâll drink with you.â Boyce picked up one of the cans on the floor and opened it, he took a big gulp, put his arm around Armandâs neck, hugged him and said in his ear, âIt will pass, when he gets better you can make it up to him, youâre still young, there will be opportunities.â
Armand still felt the pain in his heart, but he knew that his lamentations would do no good.
All he could do was try to make it up to her in the future. He looked at Boyce with red-rimmed eyes, âDo I still have a chance?â
âYes, you do.â Boyce answered him with determination.
Armandâs mood was much better, âPlease stay with me, I donât want to be alone.â He was afraid he couldnât control himself.
Boyce agreed.
When Boyce asked Matthew if he wanted to join them, his phone rang.
Matthew pulled out his phone and answered the call, it was Dolores asking, âIs Armand better?â.
Matthew looked at the two men embracing, then hunched over with disdain.
âThatâs good, Iâm at the hospital door, if youâre not free thereâs no need to come, Iâll take a cab home.â
Matthew said, âIâm free.â
Armand had Boyce with him.
He stood up and headed for the car, âIâm leaving.â
Armand didnât feel balanced, he lost his son, and he was rejected by the woman he liked, his heart was full of bitterness, but Matthew was going home now, he had a wife so he no longer cared about his friendsâ¦.
âWomen before brothers!â shouted Armand.
Matthew was opening his door, then looked back, âDo you want Theresa to get well?â
Armand felt discouraged, he wanted her, of course he did, Theresa just wanted to see Dolores, if Dolores couldnât do it then Matthew would help her.
âIâm useless, donât take me seriously.â Armand smiled with red eyes.
âDonât worry.â He said no more, as his friend of so many years, he would find the best doctors for Theresa.
Armand swallowed and said, âThank you.â
