The man was stunned â what had he said?
Suddenly he realized what Matthew was saying. He looked at Abbott: âI told Mr. Nelson that his girlfriend is pretty.â
Abbott froze. His knees went weak. Then Abbott opened his eyes and looked at the man, âDamn it, are you blind? I donât have a girlfriend.â
Dolores moved to Matthewâs side, and she could see Matthewâs blue veins bulging at his temples. Dolores leaned silently against Matthew.
But Dolores groaned in her heart. That man knew nothing about them, and so she misunderstood him.
Why the fuss?
The man was confused. What was going on here?

Did he say the wrong thing?
The man was sweating, âIâ¦â
Dolores knew Matthew was in a bad mood. She didnât want to disturb Matthew when he was working, and so she didnât head to the office right away, and that caused a misunderstanding. Dolores didnât want Matthew to throw tantrums with someone else.
Dolores looked at the man, âI was actually looking for Mr. Nelson. You should leave now.â
The man didnât dare make a move. He looked at Matthew as if he was waiting for his order.
Matthew scolded the man, âDidnât you hear what he said?â.
The man was stunned. He looked at Matthew with his mouth open â had he heard something he shouldnât have?
This womanâ¦
âWhy are you still here?â Abbott glared at the man.
The man rushed toward the exit and accidentally slammed the door. Immediately a bump appeared on his forehead. Abbott sneered at him, âYou look like you have bad eyesight. You should go to the hospital to get it checked out.â
âYes, yes, I should,â the man ran out of the office, covering his forehead.
Abbott laughed fondly, âHe didnât see things right. He made a mistake.â Matthew didnât buy Abbottâs story, however. He kept looking at Abbott.
Abbott was terrified. He looked at Dolores and asked for help.
It wasnât his fault. Donât let Matthew torture him.
When Dolores wanted to say something, Matthew stopped her, âDo you want to put words in for him?â
Dolores changed her mind right away.
Abbott gave up.
He felt he had bad luck today.
Dolores grabbed Matthewâs arm and asked, âWhat time do you get off work?â Matthew was still angry. He didnât answer Doloresâ question.
Dolores stood on her tiptoes and wrapped her arms around Matthewâs neck, trying to be sympathetic, âIâm hungry. Can we go eat, please?â
Dolores waved Abbott behind Matthew. Abbott understood her signal and slowly made his way toward the exit.
Matthew lowered his head and looked at Dolores. The way Dolores was smiling made her eyes look like the bright crescent moon. Matthew ordered Abbott without raising his head, âYouâll take care of the acquisition.â
Abbott breathed a sigh of relief, âSure.â
Abbott then quickly left the room and closed the door.
Dolores let go of Matthew and wanted to step back. However, Matthew wrapped his arms around her waist and pulled her back into his arms. She pouted, âWhy, do you want to leave after you use me?â
Matthew and Dolores were very close to each other. Dolores lowered her head and said softly, âYouâre mean.â
Matthew lifted Doloresâ chin and kissed her lightly on the lips, âIâm mean?â.
Matthew thought he was just being human. No man could bear the thought of his girlfriend being recognized as someone elseâs girlfriend.
âSo domineering,â Dolores thought.
Dolores said carefully, âPlease call Armand. I need to see him.â
Matthew was speechless.
âWhy did you ask me to come here?â remembered Dolores suddenly.
Matthew was so busy lately that he didnât have time to sit down for a proper lunch with Dolores. He asked his secretary to make a reservation at a restaurant and planned to invite Dolores to dinner. So Matthew asked Dolores to come to his office.
Matthew didnât answer Doloresâ question, but instead answered with another question, âWhat do you need Armand for?â
Dolores took a deep breath as she remembered the suffering and struggles Theresa went through. She raised her head and looked at Matthew, âI want to beat him up.â
Matthew stared at Dolores and paused for a moment. Then he blinked and rubbed his temples. He didnât know how to react to Doloresâ request.
âCall him now,â Dolores threw herself into Matthewâs arms and tugged on his collar. It was not an everyday scene to see Dolores acting so affectionate, especially in a flirtatious way.
Matthew smiled and remained silent.
Dolores pulled Matthewâs neck towards her. The tip of their noses were so close to each otherâs that Matthew could even see the peach fuzz on Doloresâ face and the small beads of sweat on her forehead.
Dolores put on an angry expression, âAre you going to call him or not?â.
Dolores had a plan. There was a difference between her making the call herself and Matthew making the call for her.
If she made the call and expressed her discontent over the phone, it would be just between Armand and her. But if Matthew made the call and Dolores made her complaint, or if she said something unfavorable, it would represent that Matthew also thought the same thing.
After all, Matthew did make the call.
Matthew blinked, and there was a lock of Doloresâ hair in his eyelashes.
He chuckled then as he felt amused yet resigned, âYour wish, my command.â
Then he paused, âBut on one condition.â
Dolores paused and asked, âWhat would that be?â.
Matthew looked at the floor and acted as if he was considering it. Then he said teasingly, âThat you take over the next time weâre in bed?â. Dolores was speechless.
Doloresâ face turned red. Matthew hugged her tightly and stopped teasing her. He hugged her with one of his hands and used the other to make a call with the office phone.
He dialed Armandâs number and invited him to dinner.
Armand readily accepted Matthewâs invitation.
Matthew hung up the phone and looked at Dolores, âWhat do you think?â.
âYes,â Dolores answered him quietly.
But Matthew couldnât leave work yet. Matthew needed to finish some paperwork. He asked Dolores to sit on his lap and hugged her with one of his arms. Then he continued to flip through the stack of documents on his desk. Some were in English and some in Mandarin. There were many statistical tables and jargon that Dolores could not understand. She felt dizzy just reading their contents. Dolores hid in Matthewâs arms and started to fall asleep. Matthew stroked her back and asked her to take a nap, âIâll wake you up later.â
âOkay,â Dolores replied with half-closed eyes.
Then Dolores fell asleep safe and sound. She woke up when Matthew carried her to the car. âAre you finished with your work?â asked Dolores.
Matthew nodded and covered Dolores with his jacket, âAre you hungry?â
Dolores nodded.
It was well past dinner time. Dolores wasnât sure if it was dinner or supper they were headed for now.
The city lights were dazzling. The night seemed like daytime under those lights.
The car soon stopped in front of an expensive restaurant.
Dolores looked out the window and saw Armand talking to a woman on the side of the road.
Dolores rolled down the window and the cold wind filled the air. She adjusted her coat and stared at the woman. âIs she Armandâs ex-girlfriend?â thought Dolores.
âAnd are they still talking to each other?
Dolores narrowed her eyes. She wasnât very happy with what she was seeing.
Phoebe had some people following Armand since the day he left the hospital. She was trying to find an opportunity to damage Armand and Theresaâs relationship.
Phoebe knew that Theresa had left the Bernie Family mansion and that Mrs. Leslie had lost the ability to speak at that time.
Phoebe thought it was the best time to get Armand to come back to her.
But she knew she couldnât do things by force. So, it was a plot that they met today. She didnât engage Armand in conversation, but made herself the helpless sexual harassment victim.
But of course, the sexual harassment aggressor was her people.
If Phoebe canât be the first to engage Armand in conversation, then she will make Armand want to talk to her.
Phoebe didnât think Armand would stand by and watch her being harassed. Even if they broke up, Armand loved her, didnât he?
They were more than strangers, werenât they?
Phoebe acted according to her script. Just as she expected, Armand helped her when he saw Phoebe being harassed by a guy on the street.
And Phoebe âaccidentallyâ sprained her ankle when she tried to defend herself from the stalker.
Phoebe acted like she didnât want to bother Armand. After Armand rescued her from the stalker, she quickly left with her gimpy leg after thanking Armand.
Armand wanted nothing to do with Phoebe at first, but took pity on her when he saw her limping.
âWhere are you headed? Let me take you there,â Armand held Phoebeâs arm for support.
Phoebe looked down, âItâs okay. I donât want to bother you.â
âIâd still help, even if you are a stranger.â
Phoebe didnât refuse Armandâs offer of help this time.
âIâm so sorry. I wanted you back so badly and Iâve done so many things wrong. I never meant to cause you trouble. Iâm so sorry,â Phoebe showed a sincere expression, as if it was like a long time ago.
Armandâs mind went blank.
