âI know Iâm wrong, Dolores. Just help me.â Armand tugged on Doloresâ sleeve and pouted, âFor being so pathetic, help me get in touch with Theresa, okay?â
Matthewâs brow furrowed deeply. Then he squeezed her shirt and yanked it away, âJust talk. Donât touch her.â
Armand didnât know what to say.
âDolores, if you donât help me, I wonât be able to live.â Armand stared at Matthew and curled up on the couch, âIf I donât see Theresa, I wonât leave.â Armand acted cheeky.
Anyway, it was nice here, there was food and drink. It was a big place, and there was no shortage of rooms to sleep in.
âAs you wish.â Matthew dragged Dolores upstairs.
Dolores looked at him uncertainly and asked, âAre you really going to leave him alone?â
Matthew didnât speak and dragged her upstairs in silence. It wasnât that he didnât want to worry about Armand, but how could he worry about love-related matters?
It was Armand who should be talking to Theresa. He didnât want Dolores involved in their relationship.
If they reconciled, that was fine. If they broke up, who was to blame?
Dolores?
In fact, Dolores could see that Armand was very sad.
But she had to make him suffer a little, so that he would know to love Theresa in the future.
gα â Î·Ï Î½ð® ðsâ¤com has it all âIâm going to call Theresa.â Dolores looked at Matthew, who was closing the door, and explained, âIâm not prying into your relationship, but I want to know whatâs going on with Theresa now.â
She was sure Theresa wasnât feeling well either when they broke up.
Since she was able to agree to get married back then, she must have had feelings for Armand, too.
She pulled out her phone and dialed Theresaâs number.
Theresa had moved out of the place where she was living with Allison, and no one knew about this new place she was living in. It wasnât a big house, but it was big enough for her to live in by herself.
The sound of dripping water came from outside. She sat in front of the window reading a book entitled âWhat is Happinessâ. In it was a sentence she had read countless times. âWhat is happiness? Happiness is a ray of sunshine in winter that warms you. Happiness is a cup of iced tea in midsummer that makes you comfortable. When you settle easily, a ray of sunshine and a glass of water give you happiness.â
âHow true!â she thought. If a person wanted too much, he would not know what he wanted and would lose his happiness.
Like now, she complained and lamented in her heart. She blamed Armand for not doing what he had said he would do and regretted agreeing to marry him and making a fool of herself.
But when she thought about it, as long as she let herself go, it was no big deal.
Armand was but a passerby in her life, adding a glimmer of joy and sadness to her memory and would not stand in the way of her future.
She was happy now, too, if she wanted to be. She felt a little warmth in the winter sun.
Buzz-
The phone she had placed at her feet rang. She looked down and saw the caller ID on it, and didnât answer right away. The store was scheduled to open on the eighth day of the month, and it wasnât time yet. It must have had something to do with Armand, since Dolores was calling her at that moment.
She thought for a moment before picking it up, âLola.â
Dolores walked to the window. The snow was already melting and snow water was dripping from the treetops and eaves. She mulled it over in her mind before speaking, and instead of speaking directly about her and Armand, she said, âAre you free?â
Theresa pursed her lips, âDid Armand ask you to get in touch with me?â
Dolores didnât hide it from him, âHe was drunk and came to my house, he asked me to get in touch with you, otherwise he wouldnât leave. But donât worry, thatâs not why Iâm calling you. There is room for him here. I wanted to ask you if youâre okay.â
Theresa bowed her head, âIâm fine.â
She was fine as long as she let herself go.
Theresa realized that letting go wasnât hiding, it was confronting.
âIf he becomes unreasonable again, tell him to contact me.â She had blacklisted Armand from her schedule.
Now she decided against itâ¦not forgiving him, but dropping the matter and no longer clinging to him. Even if she faced Armand again, she could be calm and serene.
Dolores laughed, âI see you are very sad. Iâm not trying to persuade you. Iâm just stating the facts as I see them.â
Theresa also laughed, âIt makes me feel insecure.â
Maybe he still had feelings for her.
âThen Iâll tell him,â Dolores said.
The two talked some more about work stuff and had a good time. After hanging up, Dolores went downstairs and tried to tell Armand that Theresa would now take her call, but found that he was asleep.
Coral grabbed a blanket and pulled it over him. Dolores sighed and didnât call him, thinking she would wait until he was awake.
Dolores went back into the room and found Matthew lying on his back on the bed.
Dolores looked at him, âArmand is asleep, do you want to take him to the bedroom?â.
Matthew rolled onto his side, rested his face on one hand and crooked his finger at her, âCome here.â
As for Armand, the house was heated, so he wouldnât freeze, even if he didnât sleep in the room.
Dolores, almost instinctively, took a step back and looked at him suspiciously, âWhat are you doing?â
He smiled as his eyes sparkled, âIâm not a monster that eats people, why are you so afraid of me?â
Dolores curved her lips, âI donât think youâre normal.â Matthew was speechless.
What wasnât normal about him?
âCome here. I have something for you.â
Obviously, Dolores didnât believe him and backed away even further.
Matthew was speechless again.
He suddenly felt he was a loser. How could Dolores be so afraid of him?
He sighed helplessly and pulled from his pocket the necklace Jessica had given him. âYour mother asked me to give it to you.â
Dolores stared at the necklace in her hand and hesitated, âMy mother?â
She walked over and didnât immediately go for it, but judged the truthfulness of Matthewâs statement in her mind.
He had never seen Jessica wear such a necklace, but it didnât look like something Matthew would buy either.
He took it. As soon as she touched the necklace, he grabbed her hand. He pulled hard and she fell into his arms.
Then he asked with a smile, âStill hiding?â
Dolores shook her head decisively, âNo.â
She snuggled quietly into his arms and asked, âDid my mother really ask you to give it to me?â
Matthew nodded earnestly.
Dolores examined it carefully and found nothing special. It was just an ordinary platinum necklace. Matthew hugged her from behind and said, âKeep it.â
Dolores shook her head, âPut it on me.â
Actually, she had given it up a long time ago. She was just heartbroken about what Jessica would have to face in the future.
Since it was hers, she had a reason to carry it close to her.
It was as if he was still close.
Matthew wrapped the necklace around her neck and snapped it on at the back. On the inside of the clasp were some very small letters and he didnât notice them. He thought it must be the brand of the necklace, so he didnât pay much attention to it.
The necklace was thin, but very shiny, and looked very striking in contrast to her black sweater.
Life after the New Year was quiet. The two children went to school after the 15th of the first month. Their original plan to hold a dress parade with chiffon watered down as the theme was put on hold. Matthew was a bit busy, always leaving early and coming home late.
As for Theresa and Armand, he wasnât paying much attention to them. That day, after telling Armand that Theresa was willing to see him, Armand left and never saw her again.
In the blink of an eye, almost a month had passed since the new year. Before February, Dolores received a call from Matthew before work. He asked her to come to his office, and just asked her to come without saying what he wanted her to do.
She hung up the phone. However, as she was getting ready to go to Matthewâs office after work and passing by the bathroom, she saw Theresa throwing up .
