He kept repeating to himself that the toy was fake. If he got scared, he would fall into the bad guyâs trap.
He must not be afraid.
He walked to the bed firmly and pulled the blanket. There was nothing there. He turned around and looked at Matthew, who was standing in the doorway, âWhereâs the dummy?â Matthew had asked the others to throw it away before taking Samuel there.
Samuel was so bold that Matthew was relieved and proud of him.
He walked in and his large palm rested on Samuelâs head. He stroked Samuel affectionately, âYouâre a brave boy.â
âOf course,â Samuel looked up, he showed an arrogant pattern, âI was born for Mama, of course Iâm brave. I said Iâll protect her when Iâm older, butâ¦â
His mother was angry when they went upstairs.
What was he to do?
âMom seems upset,â Samuel blinked.
Matthew saw him, âCome on.â
He took Samuel downstairs and sent him to eat with Boyce and the rest in the VIP room. Then, he went to check on Dolores.
g Ɐ lnÏ Î½ð® âsâ¤com, your storytelling home Dolores was standing on the stairs. She was contradicted and her mind was in disarray.
She regretted not blocking them at that moment.
Matthew stopped walking at the sight of Dolores. Then he walked toward her with a firm, slow step, âYou should trust our son.â
Dolores turned around and looked at the man standing there. Of course she trusted her son, but he was only five years old!
âMatthew, are you crazy!â she rushed at him and kicked him. He stood still as an upright mountain and let her throw the tantrum.
Dolores was excited, she kept waving her hands around. Matthew was worried she was going to hurt herself. He took her hands and hugged her dominantly.
âCalm down.â
âYouâre hurting him a second time by asking him to see you again. How can I keep calm? If he goes crazy, Iâll hate myself forever.â
Matthew stroked her back and said deeply, âStay calm, he wonât freak out.â
His hands and voice seemed to have magic. Dolores calmed down as she lay in his arms.
She raised her head and looked at him. Dolores could clearly see the hair on his face at close range. Her skin was clear, âHow is she?â
âSheâs fine,â Matthew sighed lightly, âTrust me, I know what Iâm doing.â
Dolores lowered her head and explained, âI donât want to mistrust you, I justâ¦â
âYou donât trust your son?â Matthew interrupted her.
Matthew knew she was worried that her son would be harmed.
âHeâs a kid, heâll grow up and face other people in the future. Sometimes the thought of people is more horrible than the doll. He must learn to cope with it and overcome it. Overprotecting him is not good for him.â
She knew what Matthew meant, he simply loved her son very much.
âCan you ask my permission before you want to do something?â Dolores was not as ruthless as Matthew.
She realized there was a mistake in his words, she quickly elaborated, âI mean the child issue, you should discuss it with me.â
She didnât want Matthew to misunderstand that she wanted to get involved in his affairs.
Matthew smiled, his eyes sparkling, he purposely said, âWhat if I donât want to discuss it with you?â.
Dolores raised her hand and pretended to hit him, âIâll hit youâ¦â.
Matthew grabbed her hand and kissed her palm, âHit here.â He grabbed her hand and put it to his face.
Dolores merely said, a manâs face should not be hit easily.
She took her hand back, âDonât play.â
Matthew didnât play with her anymore. They were sad about the incident with the doll, but then they got rid of the sadness. He held her shoulder, âYou must be hungry, letâs get something to eat.â
Indeed, Dolores was hungry, she did not eat all day.
After Laceyâs fashion store was trashed, she got rid of it. She stayed home these days and didnât look for another job.
Charles found her in his residential area.
She was carrying some food, it looked like she was coming back after buying things. She was stunned to see Charles, then quickly ran to him, âWhy are you here?â.
Charles smiled, âI just wanted to visit, how are you lately?â
Lacey smiled, âPretty good.â
The mood was quiet.
The worst part of the conversation was that neither of them suddenly had anything to say.
It was awkward.
âYou just have your food now?â Charles looked at the things in his hand and spoke first.
âYes,â Lacey lowered her head.
âCan you let me in?â Charles smiled.
âMy pleasure,â Lacey quickly stepped in front of him and led the way.
âAre you staying here alone?â asked Charles as they entered the elevator.
Lacey nodded, âYes, I rarely go back to my foster parentsâ house after I grow up. They donât treat me well, I donât like going back. Iâve already saved some money when I managed my fashion store. I plan to find other things to do.â
âThatâs great,â Charles lamented as he looked at her. She was a naive girl when they stayed at the orphanage. She had a close friendship with him. She did not live happily after she was adopted. When they were reunited, he helped her, then only she had a better life.
How was it possible for her to do something like that?
âWhy are you coming to see me today?â Lacey held the plastic bags in her hand.
âNothing, I just want to see you, canât I do that?â Charles was still smiling.
Lacey smiled too, âIâm so glad youâre visiting me. If I can help you with anything, tell me sincerely.â
The elevator stopped as they spoke.
Tom pushed Charles out of the elevator as Lacey went ahead and opened the door.
The condo he was staying in was small, but with all the necessary amenities.
It was well kept and clean.
âMy place is a little small,â Lacey set things on the table and poured a glass of water for Charles.
âThank you,â Charles received it, who held it and didnât drink. He looked around the house, his gaze finally settling on the picture frame on the dresser next to her bed.
It was the picture they had taken of each other during their childhood.
He remembered that the photo had been taken the day he was adopted by Nathan.
Lacey went forward and picked up the frame. She looked at the people in the photo, smiled and said, âWe are so young at that time. How nice it is that we are not separated.â
Charles was touched, not by Lacey, but by the past.
âI donât expect you still have it.â
Charles was surprised that he could still see the picture taken of her at her orphanage.
Lacey rested her finger on the boyâs face in the photo, âI didnât live well after I was adopted. I look at him every time Iâm discouraged. Then, he gives me the courage to live.â
Evidently, her words were serious. Charles pretended not to understand her words, âI have something to do, I will go now. You can contact me if you need help.â
âIâm sorry, Iâ¦â Lacey realized she had said the wrong thing.
She was sorry.
âDonât worry,â Charles didnât care about that, he couldnât answer her so he just pretended not to understand.
He just made her his friend and relative.
No further relationship.
âIâll walk you out,â Lacey lowered the frame, she was panicking.
Charles looked at the people in the photo. Obviously, the photo was specially processed because the traditional photo could not be kept for long.
âDonât put a picture like that next to your bed.â
Lacey looked at him, speechless, âOkay.â
âCome on.â
Tom pushed him out of the room. Lacey sent him to the elevator, Charles motioned to him, âDonât follow me anymore, come back.â
Lacey didnât leave, she stood in front of the elevator.
Soon, the elevator door closed. Disappearing from her sight, Tom voiced his opinion, âMrs. Ward seems nice, I donât think she does that sort of thing.â Charles showed a bored expression.
He believed Matthew wouldnât make erroneous speculations, but he didnât think Lacey would do that sort of thing.
âSend someone to watch what she does at home every day.â
