Time had stopped.
Dolores Flores stood and staggered as if she was about to collapse.
Matthew Nelson stared into her eyes in despair and spoke word for word.
âThat night, it was me.â
She was stunned at Matthewâs comments and plunged into confusion as if struck by lightning.
She was pinned to the floor.
âWhatâ¦what did you say?â
âHow can it be, how can it be, how can it be you?â she said covering her face with her hands as she cried and laughed at the same time.
It was unbelievable, he paced back and forth, thinking how could it be.
âBack then Sampson Herbert did some research for me, he saidâ¦he said I had been a local that night, how could it be you?â Her leg accidentally hit the edge of the bed, she fell on it and rubbed her hair vigorously.
Matthew grabbed her scratching hand, held her chin and forced her to look up at him, âWhat did you say, did you look into it?â There were still traces of tears in her eyes.
She looked at him with fear and anxiety, her mouth was as if she held an ice cube in it, she sobbed for a good while, but no words would come out, she pulled out the hand Matthew had grabbed, his fingers swept her cheek, slid down to her neck, along her collar, and touched her shoulder, âI suspected it when I discovered bite marks on your shoulder. So I asked Sampson to help me investigate, and he subsequently informed me that he was a local that night.â
Gradually he calmed down; could it be that his original thoughts were correct and Sampson had lied to him?
Sampson had always been by her side, caring for her and helping her, had often claimed that Samuel Flores and Simona Flores were pitiful without a father.
But, really, had he already known the truth all along but was hiding it from her?
âYou lied to me?â she said, looking up.
Matthew moved closer to her and covered the back of her hand with his warm palm. He held her icy hands, wrapping his own around them.
At that moment, his emotions were indescribable; all the words he wanted to say turned into a kiss that deeply covered her lips.
Dolores was still in a dreamlike state where everything was so blurry and surreal.
Like a bubble in an illusion that burst after a pinprick.
But the warmth of him standing so close to her was so real and so intense.
âHave you looked into it?â
She wondered if it was a falsehood heâd made up to comfort her.
âYou donât need to ask, I know it was you,â Matthew said as he cupped her hand in his palm and gently kneaded it.
He had no idea where this strange familiarity with her came from until he discovered the truth.
Later it was revealed that there was a reason for all this.
Dolores withdrew her hand, her palm abruptly empty, which made him uncomfortable, and he looked at her.
Dolores looked at him, âI donât want to make a mistake.â
When she calmed down, she was extraordinarily calm; this was no simple matter; this was about the father of her children.
Matthew rubbed the corners of his eyes; he had lost weight again and his skin was ice cold, he could imagine what he had endured.
âHow do you think Iâm aware of this?â Matthew sat on the side of the bed, pulled her into his arms, patted her hand on her shoulder and informed her that Jayden Nelson had performed the paternity test behind her back.
So there was no doubt that Samuel and Simona were his children.
Dolores closed her eyes slowly.
It still felt like she was dreaming.
âPinch me.â
Matthew noticed the scar on her forehead as he looked down. The scar wasnât particularly visible and was hard to notice due to a layer of foundation covering them. He lovingly caressed the scar. He continued to stroke lightly and gently, with a hint of uncontrollable trembling.
Her eyes were red. The redness in his eyes was due to her being gone, as well as his grief that he had not been able to discover and protect her in time.
He cared so much for her, he felt protective of her. He had never seen such a lively, deep and understanding look on her face, before he treated her well, but always with reservations, he had never opened his mind, but now things were changing a little.
âWhat brought you here?â asked Matthew.
According to Bess, Sampson brought her to Sichuan Province.
Why would she show up here and be involved in something with Charles White?
What had happened all this time?
And what had she encountered?
She couldnât help a shiver as she remembered the days when she had been confined by Sampson; even after facing countless life-and-death situations, she still had a nagging fear at that moment.
He continued to comfort her by massaging her slender back with his warm, broad palm.
Dolores was finally able to speak calmly of her experiences at that moment, âI was taken here by Sampson and after running away, it was Charles who saved me.â
She said nothing about the danger encountered.
Matthew realized she must be hiding something, as the place she ended up locked up in was very surprising. He grabbed her by the slender waist and laid her down. Just like that, they lay on the bed. They didnât cover up, he held himself close to her, his own temperature, to warm her.
Matthew finally fell asleep cuddling her in this position after some time.
Dolores turned over and saw him asleep. She noticed he had dark circles under his eyes and couldnât help but reach out. His fingertips barely grazed her skin, he grabbed her hand with his eyes closed. He placed his fingers on her lips and kissed her, âStay with me for a while.â
He hadnât slept well since sheâd been gone, and now that she was in his arms, he felt peaceful.
âOkay,â he said.
Dolores closed her eyes as well.
Dolores hadnât slept well all this time either, and right now, in the middle of âthe quiet of life,â she felt really sleepy.
Dolores had no idea when she fell asleep, the only thing she knew was that in her dreams there was always someone kissing her neck, her hair, her cheeks, the tip of her nose, her lipsâ¦.
They stayed in the room for a day, with Boyce keeping watch outside to make sure no one disturbed them.
Dolores awoke to find a pair of deep-set eyes watching her.
Then she jerked awake.
âYouâre awake, are you hungry?â Matthew gently brushed the layers of hair from her forehead.
Dolores nodded, for she was hungry.
âLetâs go in the other room, Samuel, and Simona will be happy to see youâ¦â
âWait, what?â before Matthew could continue his sentence, she stirred and interrupted, âSamuel and Simona are here?â
âYaâ¦â
âHow come you didnât say that before?â She gave Matthew a stricken expression. It had been a long time since she had seen her two children and she missed them so much.
She was so anxious to see her son and daughter, she quickly got out of bed that she didnât notice that Matthew had fastened the ties of her dress. As a result, the straps were torn, she felt cold, let out a cry of surprise and instinctively put her hands to her chest, turned and discovered that the ties of her dress had been broken.
Matthewâs attention was drawn to her.
When his eyes met hers, they both gasped.
âGet up,â Dolores said as she blushed.
Matthew didnât obediently get up, but looked underneath his clothes; his belly extremely flat, with no extra fat. His skin was white, with a certain pinkish hue, and vaguely faint stretch marks were visible below his navel, but they were not deep but shallow, and whiteâ¦.
His Adamâs apple rolled uncontrollably.
Dolores pushed him away in shame and anger, he grabbed her wrist and dragged her, she lost her balance and fell onto the bed. Matthew turned around and bent over.
She was unclothed and was underneath him.
The man on top of her was very well dressed, although he was a little wrinkled, his powerful figure was on top of her, the strong feeling of lust and love burned in her, but it was still under control, âWe are a legitimate couple,â he said.
By definition, they were still husband and wife as long as they had not obtained a divorce certificate.
âBut you still need my consent,â her gaze sizzled and her throat went dry.
âBut I donât want to wait,â he said, pressing his fingertips to her hand and rubbing it.
âI want you,â he said softly as he tilted his head toward the corner of her eyes and kissed her gently. His face was buried in the crook of her neck. âI wishâ¦â
âGive me some time,â Dolores said, tilting her head slightly.
She wasnât ready yet.
âHow long is this going to take?â Matthew said. She pulled his face close and kissed his lips.
âWhen I was young, I too was hoping for an unforgettable loving moment, but in fact, Iâve never been in love, I donât know how itâs going to turn out-â Dolores looked up at the ceiling with a floating halo of light.
âWait until I fall in love with you,â she said as she looked around.
